2Installing under Windows NT 4.0

This chapter tells how to install the ADM software under Windows NT 4.0 environment.

Follow the installation steps accordingly to make sure of that you have installed each software component properly.

2.1 ADM Easy-Installation Program

You may run the setup program directly from the CD or from your hard disk. If you choose to do the latter, you must copy first the ADM CD contents to your hard disk.

To start the Easy-Installation program:

2. If the auto-run feature is enabled, the ADM Easy-Installation program automatically launches right after loading the ADM CD.

If the auto-run feature is disabled, do any of the following:

· Click on the Start button, select Run and specify the path of the setup program, i.e., SETUP.EXE . After confirming the path, click on OK .

· Click on My Computer, select the CD-ROM drive containing the ADM CD, and double-click on SETUP.EXE icon.

The ADM Easy-Installation main screen appears on screen.

2.2 ADM Easy-Installation Program Main Screen

The following figure shows how the ADM Easy-Installation Program main screen appears on your display.

As you move the cursor within the main screen, you will notice that the cursor changes to an arrow form when positioned on some areas. These areas are called hotspots. Hotspots allow you to run or jump to another program, or execute a command by simply clicking.

The main screen contains the following hotspots:

Admin Installs and configures the system as the manager station.

Local Installs and configures the system either as stand-alone station or station to be monitored.

Exit Closes the ADM Easy-Installation program.

2.3 Installing the ADM Administrator PackageTo install the ADM application for administrator, follow the steps listed below.

1. Run the ADM Easy-Installation program. Refer to section 2.1 for instructions.

2. From the ADM Easy-Installation main screen, click on the Admin hotspot area.

The setup program automatically detects if you have installed the necessary ADM components in your system. If there is a missing component detected, the program automatically jumps to the installation of the missing component.

2.3.1 TCP/IP Installation

1. If you have not yet installed TCP/IP protocol in your system, the following dialog box automatically appears on screen.

2. To install TCP/IP, click on Install. To quit, click on Exit.

If you click on Install, the Network dialog box appears.

3. Select the Protocols tab.

4. Click on the Add button. This opens the Select Network Protocol dialog box.

5. From the Network Protocol list, select TCP/IP Protocol, then click on OK. The following message box appears.

6. Click on Yes if you want to use the DHCP-assigned IP address. If not, click on No.

7. When the Windows NT Setup dialog box appears, remove the ADM CD from the CD-ROM drive and replace it with the Windows NT Setup CD.

8. Enter the path where Windows NT CD is located, e.g., D:\I386.

9. After confirming the path, click on Continue. Windows NT starts copying the necessary files to your hard disk.

10. Click on the Close button to close the Network dialog box. The Microsoft TCP/IP Properties dialog box automatically appears.

11. From the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties dialog box, select the IP Address tab.

12. Select the Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server option if you prefer to get the IP address from the DHCP server. Otherwise, select the Specify an IP address option, then fill in the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway entry boxes with the correct data. For example:

IP Address: 200.100.100.100Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0Default Gateway: 200.100.100.1

Make sure that you enter the correct data; otherwise, ADM will not run properly. You can obtain your correct network data from your MIS (Management Information System).

13. Select the DNS (Domain Name System) tab. Fill in the Host Name and Domain entry boxes with the appropriate data.

14. If you have a DNS server, click on Add…button to launch the TCP/IP DNS Server dialog box.

15. Enter the DNS server IP address in the DNS Server entry box, then click on Add to close the dialog box.

16. When prompted to restart your system, select No to proceed with the installation process.

2.3.2 SNMP Installation

1. If you have not yet installed SNMP software in your system, the following message box automatically appears on screen:

2. You can either:

· Click on Install to start the SNMP installation.

· Click on Exit to quit the installation.

If you click on Install, the Network dialog box appears on screen alongside with the SNMP Installation window.

3. Select the Services tab and click on the Add button to open the Select Network Service dialog box.

4. From the Network list box, select SNMP Service and click on OK. The following dialog box appears:

5. Enter the desired path for the Windows NT files, e.g., D:\I386.

6. Click on Continue. Windows NT starts copying the necessary files to your hard disk.

When the copying of files finishes, the Microsoft SNMP Properties dialog box appears.

7. Select the Traps tab.

8. Type Public in the Community Name: entry box, then click on the Add button. The Service Configuration dialog box appears.

9. Enter your IP or IPX address in the IP Host or IPX Address entry box, then click on the Add button to close the dialog box.

10. Click on OK to close the Microsoft SNMP Properties dialog box.

11. Remove the Windows NT CD and replace it with the ADM CD.

12. Click on the Close button to close the Network dialog box. The setup program automatically proceeds to the ADM installation.

2.3.3 ADM Administration Application Installation

1. After the SNMP installation, the setup program automatically proceeds to the ADM Administration application installation and displays the ADM Setup Program Welcome screen appears.

3. Click on Next. The Choose Destination Location screen appears.

4. To accept the default path for the destination of the files to be copied, click on Next. To specify the desired path, click on the Browse button. The Choose Directory dialog box appears.

5. Enter the path where you want to copy the application in the Path text box. Then click on OK. The setup program starts copying the necessary files to the specified location.

6. When the setup program finishes copying the files, a dialog box prompting you to change the AUTOEXEC.BAT file appears.

7. Click on OK. Then a dialog box asking you if you want to read the README file before exiting the setup program appears.

8. To view the README, click on Yes. To proceed with the setup, click on No.

If you click on Yes, the screen displays the README file. After reading the text, click on OK. The Setup Complete screen appears.

9. Click on Finish. A dialog box asking you to restart your computer later appears.

10. Click on OK. The following message box appears:

11. Click on OK. The following prompt appears:

Click on Yes to restart your system. You need to restart your system for the changes to take effect.

After completing the installation, the Acer ADM Management Console program is added to your Program list. Refer to Chapter 4 for details on how to run the ADM Administration application.

2.4 Installing ADM Local PackageTo install the ADM application for local function, follow the steps listed below.

1. Run the ADM Easy-Installation program. Refer to section 2.1 for instructions.

2. From the ADM Easy-Installation main screen, click on the Local hotspot area. The Select a Setup Type dialog box appears.

3. Do either of the following:

· Select Typical if you want to monitor only your system. This setting does not connect you to the administrator; thus, prevents others from accessing and monitoring your system. This is the default setup option.

However, if you select this option, the setup program does not check the presence of TCP/IP and SNMP components in your system. It jumps directly to the ADM Local application process.

If you select this option, skip the Steps 5~7 and proceed directly to the Step 8.

· Select Full to install all ADM network functions in your system; thus connects you to the administrator. This setting allows the administrator to monitor as well as access your system.

4. After selecting an option, click on Next.

If you select the Full option, the setup program automatically detects if you have installed the necessary ADM components in your system. If there is a missing component detected, the program automatically jumps to the installation of the missing component.

5. If you have not yet installed the TCP/IP protocol in your system, see section 2.3.1 and follow all steps listed in the section accordingly.

6. If you have not yet installed the SNMP software in your system, see section 2.3.2 and follow all steps listed in the section accordingly.

7. When the ADM Local Version Setup Program Welcome screen appears, read the message then click on Next to proceed.

8. Click on Next. The Choose Destination Location screen appears.

9. To accept the default path for the destination of the files to be copied, click on Next. To specify the desired path, click on the Browse button. The Choose Directory dialog box appears.

10. Enter the path where you want to copy the application in the Path text box, then click on OK. The setup program automatically copies the necessary files to the specified path.

11. When the setup program finishes copying the files, a dialog box asking you if you want to read the README file before exiting the setup program appears.

Click on Yes to view the README file, or No to proceed with the setup.

If you click on Yes, the screen displays the README file. After reading the text, click on OK. A message informing you to restart your system later appears.

12. Click on OK to exit the setup program. The following message box appears:

13. Click on OK to exit the setup program. The following prompt appears:

14. Click on Yes to restart your system. You need to restart your system for the changes to take effect.

After completing the installation, the Acer ADM Management Console program is added to your Program list. Refer to Chapter 5 for details on how to run the ADM Local application.
