SUMMARY!DISCUSS]ONIFI NDINGS:

The Health Care Services Agency, Public Health Department has received a three year grant award from the Cali fornia Department of Public Health in the amount of $12,276,737 for the period October I, 20 J0 through September 30, 2013. The approved budget amount of $3,994,811, $4,092,246, and $4,189,680 has allocated to funding years October 1, 20 I°September 30,2011, October 1,2011 - September 30, 2012, and October 1,2012 - September 30, 2013 respectively. There is a required match of 100% to the award amount for each funding year which will be provided by the Oakland Unified School District and Public Health Department.

By accepting the award, the Alameda County Public Health Department will provide nutrition education and physical activity promotion to Food Stamp Nutrition Education (FSNE) eligible families. The primary goals of these activities are to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables by the children, parents, food service workers, and teachers in multiple schools of the Oakland Unified School District and other school districts in Alameda County. In addition, to promote healthy eating and increase physical activity among children and seniors, the Public Health Department will collaborate and partner with City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Department and Department of Human Services, Senior Services.

The grantor is also allowing the department to purchase supennarket or produce gift cards that can be used to purchase food and intervention materials for nutrition education taste test in schools and community interventions. The total amounts requested are $29,628 for 10/1/1 09/30/11, $24,025 for 10/1/11-9/30/12, and $30,192 for 10/1112-9/30/13.

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is receiving an increase of $125,000 from $250,000 to $375,000 to establish Harvest of the Month at thirty-five elementary and middle schools in Oakland. These schools are providing samples of fruit or vegetable highlighted in the curriculum in all classrooms. The increased in contract amount is the result of increasing fruit and vegetable costs for taste tests in these schools and the need for staff to coordinate the nutrition education interventions throughout all thi rty- five sites. Thi s contract amendment is funded from the State Nutrition Network grant.

SELECTION CRiTERiA/PROCESS:

Nutrition services staff looked at possible contractors for these services and identified OUSD as the only contractor able to provide lhese services in Oakland schools. These services are furnished by the district through their Nutrition services department which is the only path group available and responsible 10 implement these services. OUSD is SLEB exempt due to their status as community based organizalions.

FINANCING:

Funding for this grant is included in the adjust budget for FY 20 10-11, however budget adjustments are necessary to reflect the $164,408 increase in grant award received; therefore changes in appropriation and revenue are necessary. There will be no impact on net County cost.
