It is so easy to become consumed by our feelings. Life can be overwhelming and negative thoughts often unknowingly creep into our consciousness, colouring our world view. This is why we must be ever vigilant and practice WATCH. Watch our:

WordsActionsThoughtsCharacter Heart.

Having the ability to WATCH or be the silent witness to the unfolding dramas (that may sometimes be our lives), allows us to respond rather than react. We CAN choose to come from a place of mistrust, anger, skepticism, hurt OR we can have a peaceful mind and open heart. At Sathya Sai College (SSC) we teach our students to concentrate on the five human values. We practise sitting silently to ‘tune in’ to our thoughts and understand our emotions. We mindfully identify with the silent witness who is the wise inner one within. We consciously shift our thoughts to positive experiences and focus on the ONENESS that exists in all life.  By concentrating on mindful strategies to maintain a peaceful mind, students and staff are forging new pathways and creating new habits of mind. Everyday is an opportunity to become more self aware, to become problem solvers so that we can self-regulate, be resilient, be positive and live in peace and eventually eternal joy.

So, what do you choose to concentrate on? I choose to concentrate on love, hope, faith, laughter, and the pure potential of all to come from a space of understanding and goodwill. I invite you to join me in concentrating on ALL things joyous!

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

YR 11 MARINE STUDIES It has been an active year for Year 11 Marine Studies, even with the hustle and bustle of the Coronavirus restrictions.

The school bought a boat and we have utilised that opportunity to find some little hiding spots in the beautiful Tweed River, to cruise around and learn how to drive a boat. The students have also learnt how to take care of the boat and do a full service on the motor so it will be singing for years to come.

Other water activities have included skin diving at Kingscliff Creek and Tweed Anchorage, as well as building a bamboo raft. All in all it has been a fun three terms and we are all looking forward to Year 12 Marine where we will be studying Estuarine Studies, Marine Aquariums and Marine Craft Construction and Repair. TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

VISUAL ART YEAR 7

During our last lesson of Term 3, Year 7 students were shown the processes involved in creating wool from fleece, using the same tools and techniques that our ancestors would have used, to create wool for weaving or knitting.

We first felt the natural lanolin from the raw fleece. We looked at how a fleece is prepared for spinning and the spinning process on a wheel.

Some students had a go at spinning the fleece on a traditional wheel. Holly (pictured) amazed us all by spinning as if she had been doing it for years!

This lesson has now prepared students for Term 4 where they will be using fleece to wet felt material to be used in their project work.

Stage 5 (Year 9 & 10) Visual Art Elective

Part of our project work this term has focused on changing, or ‘metamorphosis’.

By layering fleece fibre, students learnt the process of wet felting. Then they used their material to create a needle felted image. This was time consuming work.

Each coloured fibre is pushed through the background using a tiny burred needle to create these beautiful gentle images.

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

R YOU OK? FUNDRAISER Students of Year 9 organised a fundraiser to promote R U OK?, a suicide prevention charity, as part of their service activity for this year.

R U OK? inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling with life.

You don't need to be an expert to reach out—just a good friend and a great listener.

Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:

1. Ask R U OK?2. Listen3. Encourage action4. Check in

Students designed bookmarks and contact details, which were handed out to students.

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

CANTEEN RESUMINGThe P&F are delighted to announce that we are able to resume a Wednesday canteen in Term 4, as NSW Health guidelines are now allowing that.

Unfortunately, parent volunteers are still unable to visit campus, however we are calling on parents to instead donate one batch of muffins or bliss balls to sell alongside salad wraps. If enough parents donate just one batch for the whole term, it will take us through til the end of the year.

Canteen will commence in the first week of Term 4 on Wed 14th October and we will be offering delicious, fresh salad wraps for $4. Wraps contain hummus, lettuce, cheese, cucumber sticks, sprouts, sliced tomato and grated carrot.

Students will be asked to order by recess each Wednesday by writing their order on a paper bag and popping $4 inside. You can write any special requests on the paper bag if you don't want certain ingredients.

As we are unable to have parent helpers, the wonderful Kaye McNaught has volunteered to be our consistent volunteer coordinator each week and she will supervise student volunteers to make the wraps and have them ready for students to collect at lunchtime. As always students will wear gloves and everyone will be abiding by food safety and COVID-safe protocols.

Thank you Kaye for making this possible, and a big thanks to all the student volunteers.  Parents who are able to donate muffins or bliss balls please message Carmen on 0400 791 148 to coordinate which week you'll cover.

STAGE 6 VISUAL DESIGN WORKS OF MERIT

Year 11 Visual Design began the term exploring the Hindu ritual of Mehndi (henna tattooing). We held an in-class workshop where students applied designs to themselves. We then continued the term looking at nature as a source of inspiration and created a selection of jewellery pieces from clay and acrylic paint.

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

YEAR 11 EHVOur pioneering grade have come to the end of Year 11. Over the past three terms, which have been somewhat tumultuous, they have displayed increasing resilience and maturity. We wish them all the best as they move forward into their final year of secondary schooling.

We have farewelled Jorian and Ilysh this term, and the time has now come to farewell Matthew as he returns to Singapore. We wish Matthew all the very best for his future and hope to hear regular updates. Matthew has been an integral group member and has brought us much laughter. He will be missed.

To all of our Year 11 students, well done on making it this far. May you all enjoy a peaceful holiday and return with reinvigorated concentration as you enter Year 12.

“Make every day your masterpiece”.

MUSIC LESSONS Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus restrictions and their residing in Queensland, Paul Roberson (guitar/bass) and Terry Gascoigne (drum-kit/percussion) were not able to commence teaching at Sathya Sai this year.

However, we are excited to announce that Shani Forrester (Michael Forrester’s sister) will now be offering instrumental lessons in vocals, guitar, ukulele, keys, trumpet, clarinet, flute and sax instrumental lessons commencing in Term 4. Temporarily, due to the current Coronavirus restrictions, vocals and all blowing instruments won’t be taught.

About Shani:

Nurtured in the fertile soils of the Tweed Valley, songbird Shani has cultivated her own unique blend of music. Playfully bridging genres spanning folk, jazz, blues, pop and world music, she brings with her a wealth of musical experience, original style and distinctive sound with something to offer everyone.

Shani’s lessons can be tailored to meet student’s interests, whether they are learning to: read, compose and improvise; sing and accompany themselves; or develop instrumental and songwriting skills.

Lessons will be conducted in the music room on a day (still to be announced) during school hours on a rotating basis so that students don’t miss out on the same lessons each week. Lessons must be paid for by parents and Shani contacted directly.

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

ATHLETICS CARNIVALIn week 8 we had a purple day, where we learnt a little more about the LGBTIQ+ community and ways we can support them. This encouraged us to think about our actions and how we can create a more supportive environment for everyone, no matter what their gender.

Within sport this is a very controversial subject and is very hard to create an environment that is ethical for all genders. After long debate with staff, AIS and the LGBTIQ+ community there still wasn’t a perfect plan. So the teachers sat down with the students to devise a better plan that would hopefully make everyone feel welcome.

We spilt everyone up into competitive and non-competitive groups based on age, the competitive groups were broken up into sexes; male, female and non-binary, the non-competitive groups were not broken up and their emphasis was on participating not on winning. This would create an environment where minority groups could stay with their friends and feel supported. I truly believe the day was a success and these actions may pave the way for future years.

TERM 3 WEEK 10 2020

FAREWELLS As the term concludes, the College regretfully says goodbye to three much loved members of our Secondary campus, Matthew Alexander (Year 11), Aliya Milner (Year 10) and Mr Forrester.

Mr Forrester is transferring to the Primary campus in his new role as Deputy Principal. We will hopefully still see him around the campus from time to time.

We are sad to see all three leave the Dungay campus and wish them good luck in their future pursuits.
