The volume of carpet waste diverted from landfill in the UK has shown a modest increase with 175,252 tonnes reused, recycled or recovered for energy in 2018. This represents a diversion rate of 44% – up from 42% and an increase of 7,252 tonnes on 2017. Around 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet arise each year in the UK. Energy recovery accounted for 113,914 tonnes – 65% of the total and a reduction of 10,087 tonnes from 2017. Reuse and recycling of waste carpet was up by 19,338 tonnes on 2017 to 61,338 tonnes, representing 35% of the total. In 2018, main growth areas were in equestrian surface materials, carpet tile reuse, carpets for cement kilns as a renewable resource to replace fossil fuels for export and in the UK and local incineration of municipal solid wastes (MSW). Core Funder manufacturing and distribution members continue to grow and provide outstanding support to CRUK as well as to their customers. These Core Funders are industry leaders in developing voluntary producer responsibility for carpets throughout their lifecycle. Retailers and flooring contractor members have grown as more companies recognise the cost saving and sustainability impacts for their businesses. They appreciate the help given by our Core Funders to improve their results in many cases saving thousands of pounds per year. Awareness and interest in recycling carpet waste is consistently high over the phone, online and at events with around 620 enquiries in 2018. 2018 Achievements

Carpet Recycling UK presents awards annually at its conference to recognise the commitment and progress made by its members.

The Winners of the Carpet Recycling UK member awards in 2018 were:

• Take Back Partner of the Year award went to Melrose Textile Co.

• Mark Purnell of flooring contractor Fantasy Flooring was named Recycling Champion for the second year.

• Reuse member of the year went to Greenstream Flooring who celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2018.

• Emerald Trading Waste Solutions won the award for both Recycling Member of the Year and Outstanding Achievement.

• The award for Longstanding Support went to one of our core funders, Milliken.

• Reuse member Envirocycle London was presented with the Best Newcomer award.
