MARCH VIRTUE - KINDNESS

This month we will celebrate the Virtue of Kindness. God

has given us the gifts of friends and companions to keep us

company and to help us along the way. Every person in

our lives carries the Spirit of God – and so every person is

our brother or sister through Jesus Christ.

Kindness can only be seen through actions. It’s not enough

to say I will be kind or I am kind. We must show that we

are kind by our words and our actions. Through prayer and

concentration, we can get better at showing kindness to

everyone we meet.

A kind person…..

Says nice things about others so they feel good about

themselves;

Sticks up for people who are picked on or need help;

Refuses to join others who are insulting, intimidating,

mean or hurtful;

Watches and looks for ways to help those in need

Blessed are you, Lord,

for the glories of Spring.

The world bursts with

the signs of resurrection;

Flowers stir in their winter beds,

Poking through

the last traces of snow.

The sun drenches us with its

warmth, stirring the hidden and

waiting life.

Within the earth, within us.

The world awakening

Reflects the movement of my heart

And I am touched

in the depths of my spirit.

At work is the power of your hands,

The Spirit of drawing life from

things both old and new.

To be praised are you, Lord

For the blessings of Spring.

Are You Planning on Moving? If you are planning a move or already have moved, please

let us know. You are required to complete a new

assessment form even if you move within our school

boundaries. If you are moving to a new school we will

give you a Transfer Form to take with you to the new

school. If you are moving but would like your child to

remain at Father Clair Tipping, please submit your

request in writing. We will be preparing classes for

September 2015 and this information will be helpful in

determining class sizes. In the past, we have had to

reorganize our classes in September due to unexpected

transfers. Please remember we must adhere to the

ministry cap of 20 students in our primary grades.

Reporting Absences and Lates If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very

important that you notify the school before 8:30 a.m. by

leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line

at 905-789-1741 and pressing 1. You should speak

clearly and leave the students FIRST and LAST

NAME, the teacher's name, and the reason for the

absence or lateness.

Early Dismissal We understand that there will be times when students

must be picked up before 3:00 p.m. due to dentist/doctor

appointments, etc. In these cases parents must send in a

note to the teacher with the pickup time.

Parents/guardians must come into the office to sign their

child out of school.

By sending in a note to the teacher and advising your

child(ren) of the pick-up time, they can meet you in the

office and we will avoid unneeded interruptions to the

classroom.

FCT Welcome to Kindergarten Night Father Clair Tipping’s “Welcome to Kindergarten”

evening will be held on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 from

6:30-7:30 p.m. All new Junior Kindergarten students and

parents/guardians are invited to attend. This is for new JK

students only.

Class List Formation for 2018-2019 We will soon begin the process of making up the class lists

for next fall. This is a complex procedure which takes into

consideration not only the needs of the individual child, but

frames those needs in the context of the larger classroom

group. In each class we strive for a balance of learning

styles, a balance of gender, a balance of learning needs and

a cross-section of abilities.

The current teachers of a grade, support staff and

administration all take part in the process. If you as a

parent wish to provide input into the process, please put in

writing to the Principal of the School by April 27th 2018

using the following guidelines:

1. Please do not make requests for specific

teachers as staffing is always tentative and

changes can take place between now and

September.

2. Requests should be made in terms of

educational contexts, e.g. your child’s learning

needs/strengths/style: information not already

known to the school; best learning environment.

Junior Basketball Congratulations go out to our Junior boys and girls

basketball teams. Our boys and girls practiced hard to

participate in local tournaments and showed a lot of

determination, skill and teamwork! A special thank you to

Mr. Toledo and Mr. Serrentino for their support and

encouragement during the season.

Black History Wax Museum Each year our Grade 6 students put on a “Black History

Wax Museum” in February to recognize the contributions

of many Black Canadians and Americans from the past and

present! On Friday, February 23rd our students put on an

excellent display based on their personal research and

presentation skills. We were pleased to see many parents

attend, along with our own students. It was another

successful learning experience and event for everyone as

our students and school community celebrate our rich

diverse culture and history. Thank you to Mrs. Najem and

Mr. Toledo for their support in organizing this very

successful event.

Healthy Lunches for

Students Did you know that a healthy lunch

includes foods from at least 3 of

the 4 food groups from Canada's

Food Guide to Healthy Eating?

Parents want lunches to be healthy, convenient, affordable

and most of all eaten and enjoyed by their children, while

kids want something that is fun, appealing, tastes good

and is approved of by their friends. Involve children in the

planning and preparation – they're more likely to eat their

lunch that way. Put a copy of Canada's Food Guide on the

fridge and encourage your children to include lunch foods

from at least 3 of the 4 food groups.

Here are some planning tips. Stock up on quick,

convenient and healthy lunch foods such as:

Whole grain or graham crackers.

Bagel chips, mini pitas, cereal bars.

Yogurt cups, tubes or drinks.

Fruit & veggies.

Pudding cups.

Baked tortilla chips with salsa.

Drink boxes labelled "100% unsweetened fruit juice."

(Products called fruit "drink", "punch," "cocktail" or

"-ade" are mostly water, sugar and sometimes

vitamin C.)

Adapted from Peel Health Website on Healthy Snacks

Cool Foods Children like to eat foods cold that adults wouldn't

imagine having.

Cold leftover pizza, chicken fingers, fish sticks

Cold pasta or cold macaroni and cheese with tuna,

sliced meat or extra cheese

Mini-kabobs with cubed meat, cheese, sweet peppers,

cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, grapes, melon or kiwi

Leftovers Lunch can be leftovers or even a breakfast type of meal.

Meat or vegetable stew, Chili con carne, leftover

pancakes or waffles, preferably whole-wheat.

Dropping off Student Lunches Lunch is from 11:25 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. If you wish to

drop off your child’s lunch at the school, please do so

before 11:25 a.m. by leaving your child’s lunch on the

lunch table located in the front hallway. There is a

separate table in the same location for Kindergarten

children. Please be sure to mark the lunch with the

students first and last name and teachers name. Let your

child(ren) know that you will be dropping off their lunch

so that they will know to come and pick it up at 11:25

a.m.

ATTENDANCE AND LATES Why is it important for my child to be in school

every day and on time? Parents and the school can work together to keep

kids in school. One of the most important first steps

is for parents to become aware of the dangers that

school absenteeism poses to a child’s success in

school and later in life.

When students miss school, they fall behind. When

your child comes home from school after an absence

and tells you they didn’t miss anything, remember,

they were away and can’t begin to know what they

missed during the hours the class was together.

Each school day a teacher presents new material and

builds on work given the previous day. When

students return from an absence they must catch up

which can be difficult for students who are not

strong independent workers. Even strong students

find it difficult to do their best when there are gaps

in their knowledge.

Insist that the kids leave the house in time to arrive

at school at least five or ten minutes before the

bell. The time spent in the schoolyard before school

is a transition time that allows your child to

reconnect with classmates and to refocus on school

issues. Lining up to enter the school with the rest of

class allows your child to become part of the group

and ease into the routines of school.

Arriving to school on time makes a difference. Your

children learn the importance of punctuality from

the example you set.

The first few minutes in the classroom are critical.

During these minutes the teacher deals with

important messages, dates, and opening lessons.

The habit of non-attendance established in

elementary school typically continues into

secondary school. By the time your child is in high

school, he or she will have more independence and

you will have less influence. Begin now to set the

standard that every school day is compulsory, even

on days your child is not ready for a test, or is tired.

Consider too, the messages you send about your

own attitudes toward missing work or using sick

days.

EQAO – Grades 3 and 6 students EQAO for all grade three and grade six students will take

place for this year during the period starting Tuesday,

May 22nd to Monday, June 4th, 2018. We kindly ask that

parents refrain from booking appointments or

holidays during this time. Parents may visit the EQAO

website at www.eqao.com for many resources and useful

information regarding EQAO, including sample tests

from last year.

Parents of Kindergarten Students Please note that if you are arriving with your child

AFTER the morning school bell at 8:30 a.m. you are

required according to school policy to sign in your child

at the school office. Please DO NOT drop your child off

at the Kindergarten doors as staff are busy preparing the

students for their lessons and this causes an interruption to

the FDK program. Thank you for your understanding.

CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS AND

ANNUAL DECLARATIONS Volunteers are very much appreciated by staff and

students at Father Clair Tipping. Board policy states that

volunteers that come into regular contact with students

must have a Criminal Reference Check completed

through the Peel Police.

If you plan to volunteer for trips, driving students to

tournaments or helping in the school, please call to obtain

a CRC form. There is no charge for a Criminal Reference

Check when you are a volunteer. An annual Criminal

Offence Declaration must be completed on a yearly basis

by all volunteers. You can also obtain the forms required

on our school website listed in this newsletter.

Ontario Elementary Progress and Report

Cards The Ministry of Education Ontario Elementary Progress

and Report Cards are legal documents and are accepted as

confirmation of Enrolment in an Ontario School as it

contains the Student’s Legal Name and Ontario Education

Number. We ask that all progress and report card copies

are kept in a safe location at home by parents so that you

may provide this information if required. Parents are

reminded to keep all original documents that would be

required for registration to another school or for

government requests, (such as Baptismal Certificates, Birth Certificates, report cards) in a safe location and

available.
