1. Rejuvenate Your Mornings – Start your morn-ing with simple stretching to loosen up muscles and joints and free your body from stress and toxins of the previous day.

2. Spend More Time on Your Teeth - You’ve got to make sure you get in about two minutes of brush and floss time. Gingivitis and periodontal disease cause inflammation in your body and aging of your immune and arterial systems.

3. Break Your Daily Soda Habit – Opt for health-ier options to get your caffeine fix like green tea or better yet just have water.

4. Make the Most of Your Commute—with Music - Research has shown that improvements of mood, behavior, even cognitive function once created by music can sometimes persist for hours or even days.

5. Create a Nighttime Ritual for Better Sleep - Decide when you want to wake up and count backward about seven hours. Now take about a 15-minute period before that to start your slow-down process.

Q&A with Carlitha HarrellWe are excited to welcome Carlitha

Harrell to the ACHS family! Ms. Harrell is the new department chair for Special Education. Originally from South Side, Chicago, Ms. Harrell taught for four years at Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College in Denver.

What brought you to ACHS?CH: I am a huge fan of Tony Smith. I know he is doing some amazing things for his students here, and I want to be on board with that.

What is your favorite part about teaching?CH: The students teach me more than I could ever teach them. I enjoy watching students learn and watching them develop into the people that they want to be.

What are some of your goals for this year?

CH: My biggest goal is to ensure that students are receiving accommodations and modifications; to ensure that students are being advocated for, and that they are receiving the services they actually need; and to get parents and the community more involved.

What do you want everyone to know about special education?CH: Special education is specialized. It is not a one-size-fits-all type of service. It’s definitely individualized. It is an opportunity to provide students with a buffet of learning.

What do you like to do for fun? CH: I am a social butterfly! I like to meet new people. I love La Casa! I like shopping in Northfield. I like going to the comedy shows at the Denver Improv.

Ms. Harrell loves spending time with her two boys, and she is a huge fan of all things Chicago, especially the Bears, Bulls and White Sox.
