pH Scale
Acids and Bases
• Acids– pH between 7 and1– Sharp or sour smell
• Vitamin C, gastric juice
– Donate a Hydrogen (H+) to solution
• H-Cl • Hydrochloric Acid
• Bases– pH between 7 and 14– Feel slippery
• Milk, Ammonia
– Accept a Hydrogen from solution (OH-)
• Na-OH• Sodium Hydroxide
Water is Neutral!
• pH of 7
Water (Dissasociated)
Both contributes and accepts hydrogen ions in solution
*ions = atom or particle with positive or negative charge
Indicators
• Change color in the presence of acidic or basic solution– Litmus Paper– Bromthymol Blue– Phenothalin
• Other indicators– Iodine (starch)– Benedict’s Solution
(glucose)
