From the President's Desk
The start of 1983 marks the beginning of a new chapter inCIFST Journal publication. After three years of operating withPergamon as our publisher, we have once again resumed complete managerial control of our Journal. The decision to terminate the Memorandum of Agreement with Pergamon Press wasmade by the Executive in consultation with the Publishing Committee and in complete agreement with Pergamon Press. TheInstitute and the Journal have gained valuable experience duringthe three year period and a visually and technically excellentpublication has resulted. Re-negotiation of the rate structure forcontinuation with Pergamon would likely have resulted in amajor increase in cost to the members. Many of the services wewere buying from Pergamon duplicate the services which wenow have in place with the Executive Director and NationalOffice and management of our own publications through theNational Office should be more streamlined and cost effective.
I view this change as an exciting step forward in the maturingprocess that is carrying on in the Institute. As we move towards afull time Executive Director position, with the appropriate secretarial and office backup, we are reaching the stage of being afully fledged scientific society, well able to manage all its ownaffairs. While many of our operations are still very capablyhandled by volunteer members, our National Office proceduresare now able to reduce the load on the volunteers and allow themto develop ideas, while our paid staff carries out the day to daytasks. This trend is evident in the Journal operations as well asthe Institute as a whole. We can look down the road to a timewhen the National Office will be charged with management ofpublications for the Institute.
I am very pleased to welcome D.C. Beckett as the JournalBusiness/Advertising Manager. Don's experience in the past asBusiness Manager for the Journal, and then as National Treasurer, will stand us in excellent stead during this vital transitionperiod.
Resumption of the management of the Journal offers bothchallenges and opportunities. We have the challenge to improvethe revenues through advertising, both in the Journal and theDirectory. Our editorial staff has the opportunity to revise andcontrol printing schedules and deadlines and assure more rapid, timely publication of "Institute Affairs" material. In all, thechange is a very positive step and we wish every success to ourEditor, his Associate Editors and Editorial Assistant, as well asour new Business/Advertising Manager and National Officestaff, in carrying out this transition.
