Description Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a course developed by the American Heart Association for the training of health care providers. It emphasizes the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the appropriate early treatment for cardiopulmonary arrest. Additional important areas of emphasis include the proper management of situations likely to lead to cardiac arrest and stabilization of the patient in the early period following a successful resuscitation. ACLS includes the use of adjunctive equipment and special techniques for establishing and maintaining effective ventilation and circulation. In addition, this program teaches how to treat the patient with suspected acute myocardial infarction and stroke.

Upon successful completion, participants will be granted an ACLS provider card through the American Heart Association. Provider status is valid for two years, and a renewal course is required to remain an ACLS provider.

Objectives Upon completion of the ACLS course the participant will be able to:

• Recognize and initiate early management of periarrestconditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicateresuscitation outcome.

• Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, includingprioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.

• Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneouscirculation, termination of resuscitation or transfer of care.

• Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the careof patients with acute coronary syndromes.

• Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, suchas stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer toreduce disability and death.

• Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leaderof a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of teamdynamics on overall team performance.

Prerequisite Participants should have basic EKG interpretation and pharmacology knowledge. These are not taught in class. The Provider Manual must be read before attending the course and the self-assessment test taken. Print your certificate and bring it with you to the course. Use the assessment to identify areas in which you need to increase your knowledge. In addition, all participants must demonstrate CPR/BLS proficiency to complete the class.

Agenda Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Program begins promptly at 8 a.m. and will adjourn around 5 p.m. The two-day provider course lasts approximately 16 hours with a one-hour lunch break each day. The renewal course lasts approximately eight hours with a one-hour lunch. Lunch is not provided.

Location Classes will be held in the Smullin Health Education Center on the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center campus, in the Asante Outpatient Center on the Asante Three Rivers Medical Center campus, or in Asante Ashland Community Hospital, unless otherwise stated. Maps will be sent with your confirmation letter upon request.

registration deadline Three weeks prior to course Enrollment is limited and will be accepted on a first-come basis. Payment must accompany registration to be accepted. A confirmation letter will be mailed upon acceptance of application. The course will be cancelled if fewer than five students enroll.

cancellations Cancellations must be received in writing 14 calendar days before the first date of the course for refund, less a $50 administrative fee assessment. No refunds will be made after the 14-day date.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in ACLS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the Association.
