    CAGE MATCHWarhammer 40,000

BRING THE BANNER BACK TO YOUR LOCAL STORE !!!Which store has the best player in the state? Lets find out.

This event started off as an ideabeing tossed about between a fewdedicated Warhammer 40k gamers.

We should get players from allover the state of Alabama together to

    play each other.

It should bring players together thatenjoy the hobby aspect and a friendlyyet competitive match for yearlybragging rights. It was an idea thatthose gamers decided to actually putinto action and is finally coming aboutas the annual CAGE Match.

The first step is a local Qualifierround. We hope that everyone

par t ic ipates in the qua l ifie rsregardless of gaming expertise. Thiswill directly promote the event andgame system at the local store leveland encourage others to participate.

The Final will be held at a differentlocal store each year to encourageplayers to branch out and meet otherplayers that enjoy their hobby andgame. The Final will strive to be a freeentry event supported by the players, gaming stores, and third partymanufacturers. Theres a lot of prizesupport and the winner of the Finalwill have their name and store put onthe CAGE Match Banner. The Banner

will remain at the winners local storetill the following year. Each year wewill compete again.

The Final will determine the storewith the best 40k player in the state. The mission is not just to find the bestplayers, but to also develop the localand state community. With that inmind, we hope that you enjoy andpromote this event, and that in thefuture, will support not just your localcommunity, but the Alabamacommunity as well.

2012 TOP FINALISTSFrom left to right.

    1. Lee Guthrie - Excelsior

    2. Ryan Johnson - Buds Place

    3. Clay Williams - The Foundry

As some of us know, we lost a fellow gamer on

Easter Day, April 8th, 2012. Lee Guthrie was only 42years old and he was one of us.

One of the requests that Lee continually made wasfor the top players from the previous year to receive abye to the next years Final.

That is a great way to remember him and is what wewill be doing from this year forward.

January 19th or 20th at your FLGS

    IN 2012

    48 players from 7

    different stores

    participated at the

    Qualifier level. The

    event rallied multiple

    gamer groups and

    established long term

    friendships. Players

    still travel to meet

    and play at other

    stores when they can

    and stay in touch

    through various online

    mediums.

    IN 2013As of printing there

    will be 6 stores

    allowing at least 21

    or more players to

    meet and get some

    games in amongst

    fellow like-minded

    players.

    LIFIER

    SBecome a CAGE Qualifier Venue!

CAGE is an annual tournament event right here in your stores backyard, giving 40k-eyearly competition that doesnt require an airplane ticket. In preparation for CAGE, thgamers will need space to practice and, ultimately, to compete! Venue participation in CAtells the community your store supports their hobby, that they can come to YOU for tgaming needs. While hosting practice tournaments, as well as the actual qualifier for CAMatch, 40k-ers will take full advantage of your venue and the products it offers.

The Warhammer 40k community is strong in Alabama and they will be looking forwarthe kind of tournament opportunity provided by CAGE. Since Games Workshop has cancthe Ard Boys series, CAGE Match is one of the few events that will be available. Every year is a new opportunity for game excitement and bragging rights! Venues that particican build personal communities and teams that will come back again and again to preparthis annual challenge.

    Hosting CAGE

To host a CAGE event all you need is gaming space with tables and terrain. Determine many participants you would like in the event based on how many 40k-ready tables venue can provide. Pick a day and time on the weekend of Jan 19th that will be optimayour CAGE Match Qualifier and advertise it to your community, including a sign up sh

tournament rules, entry fee, and prize support information. Finally, designate a TournamOrganizer that will handle the details, answering rules questions and insuring games startend on time.

Each store is asked to contribute the top 3 eager gamers from their Qualifier to send toFinal to compete for lots of prizes and a chance to bring home the Banner. The store is asked to contribute $75 towards the Final Prize support. Doing this helps keep the Final aentry event. Since everyone has a bad dice day we are also extending the invite to the plathat ranked 4th and 5th; the only requirement is a $30 contribution straight to the Final psupport. There is limited space so first

All the prize support generated is directly distributed to the Finalists, including any party products we can get our hands on.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Info flyer will haveeatery suggestions for lunch

    also have contact information

    for myself and the store.

There will be a three color

    THEFINA

LThe Final location is determined bycontinued support of the local community andinitiatives by the store owner to consistentlywork towards better gaming experiences. AFinal location obviously needs to have thefacilities to hold a tournament. The goal foreach year is to have a different store host the

Final. This brings gamers out of their localscene and increases their gaming experienceand knowledge of different play styles andarmies. This is one of best things that theCAGE Match achieves. To be in the runningfor hosting the Final, your store must haveparticipated in the Qualifiers the previous year.

Its extremely commendable for a store tocommit its resources through space, time andmonies for a whole weekend with noimmediate monetary return. This is anexample of true dedication of a host store and

it is not taken for granted. For the 2012 Final, The Foundry was

asked to host the first Final since at the time itwas the newest store location. They acceptedand it was a great store to hold the event. Ilook forward to having it there again.

For the 2013 Final, Excelsior was askedto host. Excelsior opened its door in earlyDecember 2011. Having players attend the2012 Final and bring back the banner it onlyseemed right to ask Kenny to hold the 2013.

If you get the opportunity to attend theFinal, it will be because your FLGS thatactively sells Warhammer 40k chooses to helpfinance the prize support for a state wideevent and for their local gamers: thats you!Their support and commitment to you ishelping keep this event a free entry event.

Make sure you make the Managers andOwners aware of your appreciation when youreturn to your local game store. You shouldalso thank the players that came out tosupport this event at the local level, as their

contribution towards the Qualifiers also hsupport this event.

A number of players from all over the will play five games in two days. There wthree games on Saturday, Feb 9th and twSunday, Feb 10th. Upon their arrival, Fina

will receive a flyer to assist in maintainischedule during their visit at ExcelsioBirmingham. I'd suggest entering Excelsiors phone number and address your phones.

Throughout your games there's a potefor players to have different genunderstandings of game mechanics. Ifoccurs, as it usually does, simply get a Juto help clarify things. It's your indivresponsibility to get a Judge if you haquestion or want an extra pair of eyes.

There will be a three color minimumparticipate in the Final, so dont wait tillmake the Qualifier before getting outbrushes. If there are any questions regarrules, painting, modeling, logisticsanything at all, do not hesitate to ask.

    No Mysterious Objectives

Victory Conditions:The player with the highest Battle Points wins each game. To determine the number

Battle Points an army has earned, we use mission goals. These are the goals your armwill have to achieve, and thus they dictate the tactics that youll have to employ during tbattle. The number or type of mission goals will not vary from round to round. There atwo types of goals: Primary and Secondary. Goals are independent of each other.

The Mission - 4 Primary Goals: Crusade : Each opponent gets to place one objective outside of all deployment

zones. Control more Crusade objectives than your opponent.

Emperor's Will : Each opponent gets to place one objective in their deploymentzone. Control more Emperors Will objectives than your opponent.

Relic : One objective will be located in the center of the table and treated as theRelic. See page 131 for the Relic special rules.

Purge the Alien : Destroy more enemy units than your opponent.

All the Primary Goals are in play, and are determined independently of each other. Tplayer that controls the majority of the objectives in each Goal wins that Goal. If neithplayer controls a majority that Goal is a Draw. Each Goal is 3 Battle Points if Won andBattle Points if Drawn. The total Battle Points available in the Primary Goals are 12.

    3 Secondary Goals: First Blood

    Slay The Warlord

    Line Breaker

All the Secondary Goals are in play. Each Secondary Goal achieved is worth 1 BattlePoint. See 6th Edition Main Rule Book page 122 for more information. The total BattlePoints available in the Secondary Goals are 3.

Moral Victory in case of a draw? The Victory Point (VP) totals of each opponent are

compared. The player that has more is the victor. VPs aregained by inflicting damage on enemy units, as follows:

    Units destroyed

At the end of the game every unit that has beendestroyed is worth an amount of VPs equal to its points

cost (including the cost of all its extra wargear, vehicleupgrades, etc). Units that end the game falling back or offthe battle field count as destroyed.

For example, a 260 point Land Raider would be worth

260 VPs to the opponent if he managed to destroy it by the

    end of the game.

    Units at half strength

At the end of the game every enemy surviving non-squadron unit that has lost half of its initial models or moreis worth an amount of VPs equal to half its points cost(including the cost of all its extra wargear, vehicleupgrades, etc), rounded down. For Squadrons, considerits initial models minus any Abandoned Squadron Vehicles.

In the case of units that start the game as a single model(independent characters, monstrous creatures, etc), theyare worth half their points cost in VPs if they have lost halfor more of the Wounds on their profile.

In the case of vehicles, they are worth half their pointscost in VPs if they are suffering from the effects of anyWeapon Destroyed orImmobilizedresult at the end of thegame.

For example, a squad of Space Marines starts the game

at 10 models strong (costing 190 points) and ends the

game with only 5 models left. Such a squad is worth 95VPs to the opponent.

Objectives FAQObjectives vary in shape and size and it's important to

note that the Final will be using standard 40mm pokerchips as objectives.

See page 123 in the main rule book for more informationregarding which types of units can control and/or denyobjectives.

Tournament LogisticsThe tournament will use wins and losses to determine

brackets of players. Within those brackets players will beranked by their total battle points. If needed, total victorypoints will further determine the rankings.

Your pairing for the first round will be a random selectionfrom players not from your store. After the first round, thepairings will be based on the following system.

Opposite seed pairing system will be used. Given aneven number of players in the same W/L bracket, thehighest ranked player will play the lowest ranked player.Given an odd number of players in the same W/L bracket, the highest ranked player will play down to the highestranked player in the next lower W/L bracket. Players willnot play the same opponent more than once.

There will be Sportsmanship and Painting awards at theFinal but the points will not go towards the winner of thetournament.

WYSIWYGCharacter models in particular tend to have a lot of

options as to what weapons and wargear they can use given in the army list of their Codex. The rule is that suchequipment must be visually represented on the model soyour opponents can clearly see what they are facing. Thisconcept is often referred to as WYSIWYG, which stands forwhat you see is what you get.

Power WeaponsModels that include a power weapon with no further

special rules should be played as the model is equipped. You can model a different type power weapon but it mustappear to be however it is played. You must denote thepower weapon type in your army list and it cannot changethroughout the tournament.

Vehicle Damage Table ExplodesWhen replacing exploded vehicles it is encouraged to

replace the vehicle with a like size representation of theexploded model. While the rules say you can have a pieceto replace the vehicle with, you may also use other suitablemarkers (such as dice or felt) to represent the scatteredwreckage.

The Cage Match subscribes to the

Gamers Bill of Rights developed for

GW RTT events back in 2005. We

expect the following Rights for our

    gamers and ourselves.

    1. Have lots of fun and meet new

    people.

Events are for fun, and their mainpurpose is to give everyone a chanceto have even more fun by playing lotsof games. Playing games is its ownreward , and no chea t ing o runsportsmanlike behavior will betolerated.

Meeting players from across thestate for a round of games cant beany more fun.

    2. Battle against other painted

    armies.

Each player spends a lot of timepainting and converting his models tomake his army look good. Part of thefun of going to gaming events ischecking out other players armies, picking up painting and convertingtips, and, of course, showing off yourarmy. Players who field an entire armyof unpainted models are not onlymissing out on a large part of thehobby but are also taking some of the

fun out of it for other players.

I require a bare minimal three colorminimum to participate; this is ahealthy middle ground that satisfiesthe extreme painter and the guy that

    just wants to buy some models andr o l l s o m e d i c e . S e e40KCageMatch.com for more info onthe Three Color minimum.

    3. Have any disputes or questions

settled by polite, impartial judges.Impartiality is a must and should be

expected at every gaming event.Judges are on hand to help find rulesand make correct rules calls to thebest of the Judges ability withoutskewing or bending the rules to benefitfriends or local favorites. However, right or wrong, the Head Judges calls

are final and should be respectedSince players are there to play for funthey should not feel as if the wholeday is ruined because of one bad ruledecision.

I try to ask players that have ahealthy understanding of tournamentsand the rules in general. They are alsofrom different areas to help prevent

bias, but the staple is having one souto make the call; the Head Judge.

    4. Have the event organized and

    run in a timely manner.

Regardless of how far anyone hastraveled to an event, everyoneappreciates when games are startedand played in a timely manner. Playersare given a schedule so they can plantheir trip to the event location and

back home.I make every effort to maintain an

organized event, and I take notes andfeedback from multiple other eventsand players. I hope the learnings arepassed forward into future eventsmaking them even more successful.

    5. Play in a reasonably

    comfortable environment.

    Im not an overzealous Event

    Organizer who tries to cram too manyplayers into too tight a space. Playersneed room to maneuver, a place to puttheir miniature cases, and somes t o r a g e s p a c e . T h i n g s l i k etemperature, lighting, bathrooms, andother necessities are also considered.

Each store that holds a Finadedicates their entire store to theneeds of the event. This includestables to keep miniatures during lunch(and someone to watch them) andJudges to warn off on-lookers if theyget too overbearing. This attention todetail makes for a more relaxed andfocused gaming experience.

40K CAGE MATCH 2013Alabama State Wide Warhammer 40,000 Tournament.

    2012 AT THE FOUNDRY, HUNTSVILLE

Last year gamers from around thestate convened at Huntsvilles freshly

opened game store in hopes of takingthe win. 14 players from 7 storescompeted. The Foundry, DragonQuills, Excelsior, Legion, Buds Place,Crimson Castle, and Visions showedup for the call to arms.

Huntsvilles own Clay Williams had alarge margin of battle points at the endof Day 1 and stood ready to take thewin, but the heros fate was yet to bedetermined. The second day proved tobe the true test for Clay, as LeeGuthrie and Ryan Johnson rose to thechallenge. Lee Guthrie ended uptaking the win and the loot. WillHuntsville be able to regain theircomposure and bring home thebanner? For now, the banner rests inHoover Alabama at Excelsior, tauntingthe local players and reminding themof the battle soon to come.

Needless to say, Adrien (Owner)was upset, but there was nothing tobe done.

    2013 AT EXCELSIOR, HOOVER

This year the Finals goes to thebanner, in the newly opened Hoover

store, Excelsior. Kenny has personallychallenged the local players to keepthe banner at his store for anotheryear. With the new 6th edition, itsanyones game to win.

The up and coming Crimson Bladesfrom Crimson Castle and players atDragon Quills in Gadsden are aimingfor the win. Southern Alabama will berepresented this year by Mini WarGame out of Fairhope and Gamers NGeeks from Mobile.

Will there be another upset like2012? Maybe even one from anundeclared participant? Only time willtell, and the stage is being set rightnow. So get out your good dice andget involved. Rally the troops, theres abattle brewing.

Will Excelsior keep the banneranother year? Theres a lot of playersthat think otherwise.
