Education Initiatives

• Two such initiatives were planned:– The production of a report to advance education

in schools throughout Europe– The creation of a high level computing education

research conference in Europe – following on from the earlier Informatics Education Europe conferences

Schools Report

• This has been completed• It advocates education in digital literacy and

informatics; the latter is heavy on programming

• Both are seen as compulsory for all students, up to university / college entrance level

Conference Initiative• This was to involve collaboration between Informatics Europe and

SIGCSE, with ACM Europe having a watching brief, to consider creating a highly prestigious computing education conference in Europe for Europeans

• A meeting was due to take place at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the national research institute for mathematics and computer science, in Amsterdam – This would be adjacent to the (ninth) annual European Computer

Science Summit (ECSS) organized by Informatics Europe and taking place on 7-9th October 2013

– SIGCSE will be present as well as Informatics Europe (IE) but also others who hold conferences on computing education in Europe

– Possible annual conference co-sponsored by SIGCSE and IE

represented ACM interests• Antoine Petit, Barbara Demo and Jan Vahrenhold as well as Carlo

Ghezzi attended on behalf of IE.• Explored remits, road map for next 2 years, etc• Observatory: work to be done on identifying the state of

Informatics education in each European country (similar to earlier CSTA activity)? To be ongoing.

• Agreed to review major computing education conferences in Europe and explore need for a new major conference

Informatics Europe Report

• This was published on 30th September 2013 and provides data about informatics education at university level in Europe.

• Statistics (to be interpreted with some caution):– Roughly 500,000 students enrolled on bachelors

degrees in Informatics, and– Roughly 200,000 enrolled in Masters degrees in

Informatics
