ACO KerbDrain® has been developed fromthis wealth of expertise. Manufactured from polymer concrete, the ACO KerbDrain® system is tough androbust with excellent chemical resistance.Proven site performance is backed up bythe ACO KerbDrain® system being fullyindependently tested, CE marked andcertified to BS EN 1433:2002 Load ClassD 400. The system is also compliant withthe Specification for Highway WorksClause 516 which mandates Load Class D 400 for combined kerb and drainagesystems (Load Class C 250 only applieswhere the products are protected fromdirect traffic loads e.g. located behindsafety barriers).
The ACO KerbDrain® family whichincludes 255mm, 305mm and 480mmdeep systems has now been extendedwith the introduction of a new 280mmdeep 45º Splay compact highway system.
This new range called ACO KerbDrain®
280 Splay, is designed for use on ruralhighway applications and road schemeswhere it’s more compact dimensions makeit an extremely cost effective drainagesolution. The product has a 45º splayedfront profile to match standard OPC kerbstones manufactured to BS EN1340:2003.
ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay benefits froma wide range of complementaryaccessories consisting of drop kerbs,centre stones, access units and gullies.This enables ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splayto be used as a stand alone system or bythe use of transition units (listed on page5) can be integrated directly into ACOKerbDrain® 305 drainage schemes,allowing continuous water flow betweenthe two ranges.
The one–piece construction of the systemand the lightweight properties of polymerconcrete ensure the ACO KerbDrain® 280Splay system is quick and easy to install.Whether you are installing productsmanually or mechanically to meet the HSEguidelines for kerb laying, the ACOKerbDrain® 280 Splay system provides asolution with the main units supplied ineither 500mm or 1000mm lengths.

Rural highways
ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay is ideal forgeneral carriageway drainage, wheretraditionally kerbstones and road gullieswould be used. By combining thedrainage function with the kerbstone,ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay not onlyprovides an efficient cost effectivedrainage solution, but has the addedbenefit of removing ironwork from thecarriageway which can be a commonpoint of failure in heavily trafficked areasand a safety risk to cyclists. Being alinear drainage product ACO KerbDrain®
280 Splay is also ideal for removingsurface water run off in problem areassuch as camber changes or cross falltransition points, reducing hazardsassociated with ponding and streaming.
Pedestrian and vehicular crossings
Where a continuous drainage system isrequired across pedestrian crossings andvehicle access points, a range of dropkerbs and centre stones are available. If ahalf battered kerb profile is required atpedestrian crossings the ACO KerbDrain®
280 Splay system can be linked viatransition units to the full ACO KerbDrain®
305 range of accessories.

Changing highway conditions
For highway applications where the kerbprofile needs to change from 45º splay tohalf battered and back again, such asalongside footpaths or at the approachesto urban areas, continuous drainagesystems can be created by combiningACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay with the halfbattered profile of ACO KerbDrain® 305by the simple use of transition units.

Hydraulics summary
The ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay hydrauliccapacities are given below, tabulated forvarious channel lengths and longitudinalslopes. Values for other lengths and slopesmay be interpolated. The columns formaximum catchment area (A m²) are basedon a design rainfall intensity of 50mm/h.
ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay drop kerbsand centre stones will restrict the flow, soan outfall before a drop kerb maysometimes be required.

Installation details
ACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay has beenspecifically developed to be simple and costeffective to install. A typical installation detailis shown below. The customer should ensurethat the minimum dimensions shown aresuitable for the existing ground conditions.Engineering advice may be required.

Specification clause
The surface drainage system shall be ACOKerbDrain® 280 Splay system as supplied byACO Technologies plc; all materials andcomponents within the scope of this systemshall be obtained from this manufacturer.The system shall be CE marked and fullycompliant with BS EN 1433:2002,certificated to Load Class D 400 and shallcomply with the Manual of ContractDocuments for Highway Works: Specificationof Highway Works; Clause 516. Adeclaration of conformity shall be supplied tothe Supervising Officer upon request. TheACO KerbDrain® 280 Splay shall be of100mm internal width, 150mm externalwidth and traffic face to match 45º splayedtype SP kerbs.
All units shall be one piece manufacture inpolyester resin concrete with twin inlets per500mm unit, four inlets per 1000mm unitproviding a minimum inlet area of12,400mm² per metre. The standard unitsshall be installed with the manufacturer’sdrop kerbs, centre stone units, gullies,rodding/access units, mitre units for curves(ACO KerbDrain® 305 system only) andaccessories as required for the scheme. Thesystem shall be installed in accordance withthe manufacturer’s printed recommendations,and the work carried out as specified on theSupervising Officer’s drawing no. (*) and inaccordance with recognized good practice.Standards of workmanship shall generally beas specified in BS EN 752 and BS8000:Part 14:1989.
