A safe, reliable and efficient mixed-railnetwork will play a vital role in theUnited Kingdom’s economic future.

Recognising that rail strategy needs tofocus on balancing the differing needs ofnetwork users on both local and nationallevels, the Government has set long-termobjectives in three key areas: increasingthe capacity of the railway, delivering aquality service for passengers, andfulfiling rail's environmental potential.

Pressure brought by the increasingvolumes of passengers and freight beingcarried each year highlights the need forsignificant investment. Meeting theGovernment’s targets will require theupgrade of much of the track andterminal infrastructure in order to secureits sustainable future.

The role of surface watermanagement

The need to effectively remove surfacewater from all passenger, vehicle and rollingstock environments is essential if thenetwork is to operate safely and reliably.

Modern surface water managementsystems that exploit the latest hydraulicmapping design techniques provide‘surface to outlet’ solutions that maintainoptimum performance throughout theiroperational life.

For over 50 years, ACO WaterManagement has been pioneering themanagement of surface water through thedevelopment of innovative drainagesolutions and support services. Thisdepth of understanding is reflected in thediversity and quality of our products, which cover every aspect of the watermanagement cycle and set thebenchmark for performance.

A major part of ACO’s portfolio includesmanufacturing specialist watermanagement systems for the UK nationalrail and light rail networks. ACO’s highperformance product ranges have beenused extensively throughout the modernrailway environment to overcomesignificant design challenges and tosatisfy demanding aesthetic requirements.

ACO’s continuous investment in researchand development and the drive forinnovation push forward the developmentof new sustainable products andmaterials. Where possible ACO aims toincorporate as much recycled material orwaste material as is practicable duringthe manufacturing process.

Recently, the company has developedVienite®, a genuine breakthrough in thedevelopment of recycled materials. Vienite®

utilises high levels of post consumerrecycled waste without compromisingstrength or performance characteristics. Atthe end of a product’s operational life,Vienite® can be collected, processed andreturned to production as a raw material.

The high strength resin-based material isfour times stronger than traditionalconcrete with a compressive strength inexcess of 90 N/mm² and a flexuralstrength in excess 22 N/mm².

The material has a low water absorptionrate which makes it resistant to freezethaw attack. Vienite® is also moreresistant to chemical and mould attackthan traditional polymer concrete.

The nature of thismaterial makes itpossible to developcomplex shapes andproducts that can notbe achieve withmany othermaterials.

As a major supplier to the rail sector,ACO Water Management understands theimportance of delivering highperformance, sustainable drainagesystems. Investment in leadingtechnology, design expertise and rigorousquality management ensure absoluteconsistency and levels of assurance.Every system ACO manufactures is testedbeyond the requirements of the toughestperformance standards.

Greater Manchester Metrolink

Situated within Metrolink’s City Zone, theShudehill stop is one of the key points onthe network providing a link between thetrams and the city’s bus routes. It lies ona major road intersection at the foot of asteep incline – a feature that gave rise todrainage issues during periods ofprolonged rainfall, when surface waterrunning off the surrounding roads wouldbuild up and cause problems withstanding water around the tracks.

To solve the problem Metrolink’s engineerswere able to exploit the specialised drainagesystems developed by ACO Technic whichhad proven their effectiveness on tracks witha similar profile used on light rail networks inNottingham and Dublin.

By using the ACO Grooved RailDrain,ACO TramDrain 200 and ACO S100, theteam was able to realise a remedialworks scheme for Shudehill that wouldallow a new localised surface watermanagement system to be introducedwithout the need to undertake wider andmore substantial works across thesurrounding roads. Over the section oftrack that needed attention, this wouldgreatly reduce the project timeframe andlessen the impact on other road users.

ACO Grooved RailDrain boxes wereinstalled in 16 locations where theexisting surface water drainage wasinsufficient to remove run-off from theroad surface itself. The units wereinstalled immediately adjacent to theselow points in the track to ensure quickremoval of all water intercepted by therail groove.

In locations where the capacity of theexisting surface water drainage needed tobe increased, runs of ACO TramDrain200, which are installed perpendicular tothe rails and extend across both up anddown tracks, have been installed. Furthercapacity has also been added in thecritical section where the tracks runalongside the Shudehill platform with asingle 100 metre run of S100 channel.

Greater Manchester’s Metrolink is one of the most successful light rail systems in the UK. Owned byGMPTE, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, its three lines operate a fleet ofmore than 32 trams that carry over 20 million passengers every year between Bury, Altrincham andEccles and Manchester city centre. The Bury and Altrincham lines opened in 1992 followed by theEccles line in 2000 creating a network of 37 stops covering 37km.

East Midlands Parkway

Case Study: Heavy Rail

Served by over 100 train services per day,the £25 million station is expecting toattract up to half a million passengers ayear. Owned by Network Rail and operatedby East Midlands Trains, it comprises fourplatforms, a step-free-access main stationbuilding with ticket office and secureparking for 850 vehicles.

In line with its green operationalobjectives, Network Rail wished, in itsconstruction, to use new technologieswherever possible that would minimisethe impact on the local environment. Inpartnership with main contractor, BirseCivils, it meant working with supplierswho were committed to using locally-sourced and recycled materials.

ACO Water Management’s selection wasdue to the verastility and breadth of itsproduct range together with the strengthof its environmental credentials both inmanufacturing and distribution. Thedesign team had also worked closely withNetwork Rail’s engineers to show how, through ACO’s Value Engineering process,a fully integrated surface watermanagement system would reduceground infrastructure, saving money andshortening installation time.

Three products have been usedextensively across the key areas of thestation: ACO Qmax® together with ACOKerbDrain® keep the car park clear ofstanding water; ACO KerbDrain® has beeninstalled to remove run-off from the newstation access road and used to createthe bus and taxi pull-ins along the mainentrance apron; and ACO MultiDrain™

provides drainage around the stationperimeter and along the exposedpassenger platforms.

To speed installation further, 1m longACO KerbDrain® units have been used tocomplete longer runs. ACO KerbDrain®

drop kerbs, rodding access units andshallow gullies have also been installed toprovide step-free-access, to allow easymaintenance and to tie the runs into themain drain that discharges into theadjacent River Soar.

The composite grating used in all theACO MultiDrain™ runs complement boththe glazed façade of the main stationbuilding and the non-slip textured surfacefinish of the platforms. Easily changed orremoved for maintenance, the gratingsuse ACO’s Drainlock™ bar-less lockingsystem to prevent any vertical movementor unwanted access.

East Midlands Parkway is the region’s newest mainline station. Opened in 2009 on the MidlandMain Line, it provides park and ride facilities for passengers on the routes from Leicester to Derbyand Nottingham. Situated close to the M1, the station’s location was carefully selected to encouragemotorists to switch to more fuel-efficient rail transport, relieving pressure on the surroundingcongested road network and delivering a net reduction in carbon emmissions.
