ITS London Limited was established in 1979 and has since grown tobecome one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of professionalpower tools, hand tools and related products.

Case Study

Due to its business expansion, ITS needed a newmain distribution warehouse. They found a 45,000sq ft unit in Loughton, Essex which needed to berefurbished to make it fit for purpose.

A key objective was to re-use as much of theexisting warehouse racking equipment as possible to minimise costs, and to remove and replaceinfrastructure where necessary.

At the start of 2012, ITS sought a quotation from a previous supplier for the refurbishment of the

Loughton warehouse. They also requested a quotefrom Acorn Warehouse Solutions, having foundAcorn's details on the signage fixed to the rackingleft by the previous tenants.

Acorn's price quote and approach soon gave ITSconfidence that Acorn had the ability to deliver the required solution and in February 2012 therefurbishment work commenced.

The Business Requirement

ITS moved into the newly refurbished site on schedule inSeptember 2012. The new warehouse layout not onlymaximised space but would also scale with future ITSexpansion. Much of the existing shelving and racking andmezzanine floor infrastructure was refurbished and reused.

Acorn proved very knowledgeable in addressing issues thatcropped up during the project. Their approach to problemsolving and project management helped relieve what couldhave been a very stressful process for ITS.

The SolutionAcorn designed the ITS warehouse not just forcurrent needs but also to cater for future storagerequirements. The solution comprised two-tiershelving, long span shelving and a mezzanine floorwhich took up half the building. Ten per cent of theground floor area was needed for marshalling andthe rest was fitted with wide aisle pallet racking.

The project involved removal and scrapping ofexisting surplus equipment, obtaining BuildingRegulations Approval for the necessary works and liaising with the relevant authorities.

Acorn recommended removing obsolete equipmentsuch as high-level duct work in the roof as well asupgrading the air conditioning systems to the officesand warehouse. They also suggested replacement of all lighting to the roof and underside of themezzanine floor.

The final elements included a picking systembeneath the mezzanine floor and partitioned officesfor ITS staff.

Since it was established in 1991, supply chain solutions provider Coscohas been representing importers who source products from the Far Eastfor distribution in the UK.Arranging everything from shipment of goods within China to export gateways and logistical management ofcontainers, Cosco arranges the importation on its own vessels via the port of Felixstowe.
