Medical Oncology Census

• RCP Census traditionally has a poor response rate from medical oncology.

• Our data was good for trainees – dreadful for consultants and non-career grades.

• RCR Annual Census has been much more complete –Workforce planning has been held back compared to Clinical Oncology.

• Vital to maintain up to date information.

• ACP / JSC census to compliment trainees census

• Last year Additional ACP census

• This year we have added specialty-specific information to RCP census

• Email [email protected] if you have not received

Growth of the specialty

State of the Specialty

• Constitution

• Exec Membership

• Joint Specialty Committee

– Shape of Training

• JCCO

• CRG and Chemotherapy Board

Constitution

• Reviewed 2013

• Previous reviews in 1997 & 2001

• Language and organisational mechanisms archaic.

• Based on a smaller organisation with limited numbers of members

• From a time and environment of professional / academic leadership with fewer political and financial pressures.

• No defined roles for Officers / Executive members. Lack of clarity on who has what responsibilities and leads to a small number of members doing everything

• No local/regional representative function

• Left ACP behind other specialist societies in terms of organisation, political influence and ability to engage with outside bodies.

• Identify additional roles to be filled

• Invitation for nominations to those posts and elect.

• Medical Education England (MEE), the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC), the General Medical Council (GMC), the Medical Schools Council (MSC), Conference of Postgraduate Medical Deans of the UK (COPMeD), NHS Education Scotland (NES) and representatives from Northern Ireland and Wales

• There is widespread unease about the original proposed structure

• RCP now focussed on view that one size does not fit all (Medicine vs other colleges)

• Likely to propose a 7 year minimum training with a 3rd CMT year in which all would act as junior registrars supporting acute take. 2 6-month posts. - May be opportunities to combine with AOS attachment for aspirant oncology trainees.
