Dear young rheumatologistsand researchers inrheumatology,
We are happy to present you a new issue
of EMEUNEWS about the Do-Not-Miss
Topics of this year´s ACR annual
meeting.
The ACR congress is one of the largest
scientific event in Rheumatology. As it is
now approaching, we provide a selection
of oral presentations and posters that we
consider to be noteworthy. Albeit this is a
limited way of looking at the numerous
scientific releases at ACR 2016, it might
provide an overview of hot topics in each
field of Rheumatology. From this issue
we also included the new topic “Rare and
autoinflammatory diseases”.
In addition, this Newsletter contains
details about EMEUNET events
organized during the Congress.
EMEUNET is now active in social media
hubs such as Facebook and Twitter,
while maintaining the traditional website
and the important physical (and
personal) presence at major
Rheumatology scientific events.
If this is your first contact with
EMEUNET, we invite you to explore
more and join us. If you are already part
of our community, we kindly remind you
that sharing is caring. Spread the word
about our activities and work, and help us
reach more young rheumatologists and
researchers.
We hope you enjoy reading this
Newsletter. We always welcome
feedback, comments, suggestions and
contributions.
We wish you a prolific and successful
ACR 2016
See you in Washington!

Diederik is a Belgian epidemiologist currently working in Manchester, UK. His PhD focused on the efficacy of different
intensive treatment strategies in early Rheumatoid Arthritis in the context of the Flemish CareRA trial. His post-doctoral work
focuses on safety of biological therapy in more established rheumatoid arthritis. His other areas of interest are steroid safety
and treatment delay. .

WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY
PAGE 21
EMEUNET @ EULAR Brussels conference on
reducing burden in workplace for people with RMDs
The 12th of October 2016 marked the World Arthritis Day. In light of this and as in previous years,
EULAR organised a conference in Brussels to raise awareness on Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal
Diseases (RMDs), this year with a focus on reducing burden in workplaces for people with RMDs. On
this important day for all people with RMDs, their caregivers and people who work towards improving
the quality of life of patients, discussions focused on identifying and discussing relevant topics
concerning potential issues and barriers in the current working environments across Europe. This
meeting gathered patient representatives, the EULAR steering committee (EULAR President Prof.
Gerd Burmester, Past-President Prof Maurizio Cutolo, President Elect Prof. Hans Bijlsma), the Vice
president of EULAR for PARE Marios Kouloumas as well as representatives from the European
Parliament, the European Commission and national rheumatology societies from EULAR countries.
The meeting included introductory lectures followed by three group workshops, a reporting back of the
results to all participants and a plenary discussion on the possible impact of the workshop results on
EU policy makers to improve conditions at European level.
Three main topics were addressed in these workshops:
o “How to facilitate the retention of people with RMDs in work and return to work after sick leave?”.
Main points stemming out of this included the need for more flexibility in working hours of physicians
and good self-management skills for patients. The discussions highlighted the challenges of dealing
with an invisible but painful illness and non-affected people’s understanding of this
o “Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of RMDs in work place - legislation and policy
initiatives”. At EU institution level, legislation should be adapted to the needs arising from changes in
organisations, guidelines for implementation should be proposed and the definition of disability
should be altered. Single-member states could especially deduct the taxes for healthy work
environment.
o “Dealing with RMDs in the workplace - access to occupational health professionals”. The most
essential points raised in this discussion were the need for a more cross-sectional cooperation
across EU-institutions and funding for randomized controlled trials for occupational rehabilitation.
Furthermore, the lack of information concerning the contribution of occupational health to patient
care was discussed, highlighting the need of incorporating such interventions to patient care.
We attended this conference on behalf of EMEUNET to bring in potential input from experiences and
viewpoints of young rheumatologists. The conference was covered via live streaming and twitter
(official hashtag: #EularBrussels16), so that everyone from home could follow the developments over
the day. EMEUNET also contributed to the ARD twitter platform, as well as EMEUNET Facebook,
spreading the news further and ensuring high engagement across these platforms.
