A cool way to learn about climatechangeExamination of ice cores reveals weather conditions of the past.
Consult an almanac and you can findout what the weather was like inyour hometown on any date from thepast few decades. Patrik Kaufmann,though, takes a somewhatlonger-range viewOabout800,000 years longer. Kauf-mann, of the University of Bern(Switzerland), along with col-leagues at the British AntarcticSurvey, the University ofCopenhagen, and the AlfredWegener Institute for Polar andMarine Research (Germany),analyzes ice cores from Green-land and Antarctica to read theatmospheric conditions abovethe Northern and Southernoceans long before recordedhistory began.
Just as tree rings can revealnot only a tree’s age but also itsgrowth conditions, ice coresrecord the meteorological story of thetime when their frozen layers were de-posited. As snow or ice falls to theground and compacts, it retains thetrace elements, particulates, and gasesthat permeate it. By peeling back thoselayers and reading their chemical com-position, researchers can begin to piecetogether the ambient conditions thatoccurred during the layers’ creation.
“In Antarctica, we have just a con-tinuing layering [of ice] over severalhundred thousand years of climate,”explains Kaufmann. “The temperatureon the plateau on Antarctica was neverabove 0 °C, so we have a continuousarchive.” The European Project for IceCoring in Antarctica’s Dome C core,which has a record of �800,000 years, isone such archive (Nature 2004, 429,623�628); another is the 123,000-year-old core drilled by the North GreenlandIce Core Project.
Many chemical components of theice core help tell its climatological story:sodium ion content, for instance, revealsthe extent of sea-ice coverage; NH4� in
Greenland cores indicates forest fires inNorth America; dust from Antarcticcores recalls the atmospheric moisturelevel in the Patagonia region of SouthAmerica; SO42� content indicates bio-chemical activity in the Southern Ocean,a possible surrogate for the carbon cycle;and total air content (TAC) is linked tolocal insolationOthat is, how much solarenergy is hitting the earth. The methodKaufmann and his colleagues use to mapthese chemical changes over time iscalled continuous flow analysis (CFA),in which an ice core is melted steadilyand analyzed continuously in a series ofparallel absorbance and fluorescencechambers.
Every graduate student’snightmareKaufmann recently obtained his Ph.D.,but he was a new master’s candidate inBern when he made his first foray to
Antarctica with his lab’s battle-testedCFA system. Flush with data, he re-turned to EuropeObut unfortunately,the hardware did not. Sometime after
the equipment wasloaded into a cargo con-tainer for transport andbefore the container wasopened back in Europe,the CFA equipment, plusall the team’s spare parts,disappeared.
“When my professortold me, ‘Hey, Patrik, thecargo container is empty,everything disappeared,’it was like a bad joke,”Kaufmann recalls.
But it was no joke. Itwas time to start over.After securing funds fromthe Swiss National Sci-ence Foundation, Kauf-
mann, who has an undergraduate degreein physics as well as experience as anelectrical engineer; Urs Federer, anothergraduate student on the project; and ateam of mechanics and electrical engi-neers set out to build a next-generationCFA device that would re-create theoriginal system and even improve on it.
Three ideas were key. The first wasmaking the system easier to deploy inthe field. The original design wasshipped in piecesOvalves, tubes, detec-tors, and so onOand assembled on-site.Not only was this troublesome, it madesystem calibration and troubleshootingdifficult, Kaufmann says.
The new system is modular, withthree preassembled, rack-mountedunitsOfor melting, distribution, andanalysisOthat need only be connectedto get the system up and running. Ac-cording to Kaufmann, this developmentmakes field analysis of the ice core more

productive. “In the old system, they didabout 25 m per day, and now we domore than 30 m per day,” he says. Everylittle bit helps when the core is 3300 mlong.
A second improvement is the numberof analytical channels. The current sys-tem has 11: the 8 the system originallyhad (Na�, Ca2�, NH4�, NO3�, SO42�,H2O2, HCHO, and electrolytical con-ductivity), plus 3 others that are new(TAC, dust, and total organic carbon).At the moment, the TAC channel re-ports only the volume of air trapped inthe ice, but the team is developing waysto analyze that airOfor instance, to
quantify the concentration of gases suchas methane.
A final improvement is the ability tocontrol the temperature of each mea-surement module individually (the pre-vious system had no temperature con-trol). “That seems a bit like a not-so-important thing, but it makes a hugedifference if you measure at different,stabilized temperatures,” says Kauf-mann. For instance, while Na� analysisperforms optimally at 16 °C, NO3�
analysis works best at 22 °C.In a recent report in Environmental
Science & Technology (2008, DOI10.1021/es8007722), Kaufmann and
colleagues applied their system to apiece of Greenland ice deposited�10,000 years ago, demonstrating thatall 11 channels could function in paral-lel. The resolution was so high, the re-searchers found they literally couldcount ice layers, just as with annual treerings. It was an “essential proof of per-formance,” he says. Now Kaufmann andcolleagues want to apply their CFA sys-tem to the deeper past to examine theclimatology and glaciology of the Ant-arctic circa 800,000 years B.C.E. “It iskind of a big puzzle,” he says.
