INTRODUCTION The ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Toolbox for Android is an application designed for Exercise Science students, personal trainers, coaches, and other health and fitness professionals. The application provides basic calculators for body composition, exercise (VO2) testing, fitness testing, and metabolic calculations. The application has a user-defined database tool for saving user profiles that can be loaded upon performing subsequent tests on the same subject. In addition, the application provides excel file export to easily store test results for all body composition and exercise tests. The application and calculations are currently updated per the ACSM's Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual, Third Edition Copyright 2010* and ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription 9th Edition 2013*. *The ACSM Toolbox was created by an independent party not associated in any way with the ACSM.

MANAGE PROFILES Advantages The “Manage Profiles” section allows users to store data such as height, weight, age, etc. Creating user profiles provides users with a number of benefits:

• Auto-completion of pertinent information when performing exercise tests • When exporting results to an excel file it will auto-populate all user information, and

when multiple tests are performed on a single day and exported to an excel file only 1 file will be created saving results from all tests in separate tabs.

• Allows for saving test results to a historical database (Note: The historical database is accessed by clicking “Results” button whe n viewing a user's profile.)

Creating Profiles

• From the Main Menu select “Manage Profiles”, and then select “Create”. • Fill out user information: First and Last name, Birth Date, Sex, Ethnicity/Performance

category, Height, and Weight. • Hit “Save Profile” button. • The profile will automatically be loaded and you will get a message indicating the

entry was successful.

Successful Entry Notification. Also note at the top right of the screen the profile has

been automatically loaded.

7

Viewing, Editing, Loading, and Deleting Profiles • From the Main Menu select “Manage Profiles” • From the list of saved profiles, select the profile you want to view.

o At the bottom of the screen 4 buttons are displayed; Load, Edit, Results, and Delete

• Clicking “Load” will load the profile to the application memory and is now actively available for performing tests on that person.

• Clicking “Edit” will allow you to edit parameters in the user profile, this is beneficial for fixing typo’s or if the user data has changed (eg. user may have lost weight and the profile needs to be updated to show that change).

• Clicking “Results” will show the users historical results. • Clicking “Delete” will bring up a prompt asking for confirmation before deleting the

profile. Select “Yes” to continue or “No” to cancel.

Performing Skinfold Caliper Test • First create or load a user profile if you wish to do so. It is highly recommended that

a profile is created if you plan to perform multiple tests on the same subject. • From the Main Menu select “Body Composition” • Select the Skinfold test that you want to perform. You will be brought to the test

screen. • Select the number of measures you wish to perform on the subject; 1, 2, or 3 can be

selected. For best results it is recommended that 3 measurements be taken at each site; however the application allows you to choose how many measurements you would like to use.

• Select the Ethnicity and Age of the test subject. • Take measurements as instructed per the ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing

and Prescription, 9th Ed. 2013 text, and fill in the data. • Hit calculate: • The results will be shown along with the normative value based on the population.

9

• A “Save Results” button will be displayed. • Clicking “Save Results” will display a menu that allows you to save the data to: Excel

File, Database, or Both. • The exported excel file can be easily emailed by opening the file browser and

selecting the file.

In the above screenshot notice that the results can be saved to Excel File, Database, or both Excel File and Database. The database option will only be available when a user profiles is loaded. NOTE: It is important to note that when saving to t he database, limited data is stored; it includes the test that was performed, the date, the result, and the normative value. When saving to an excel file, all test data includi ng all input fields are stored.

10

TIP: Use the Android Menu button and select “Info” to display the equations used by the program when on any body composition screen.

EXERCISE TESTS

General Features

Timers When performing exercise tests the timer feature is optional. Often times an external timer will be used (either a stop watch or timer on a cycle or arm ergometer). The timer in the application does provide the benefit of highlighting the current stage during the test. There is also the option to hide the timer. To hide the timer:

• Hit the Android menu button, then hit “Show/Hide Timer.” • The default state of the timer can also be changed in the user settings accessible via

the main menu by selecting “Settings.” • Also note that the timer can be started then hidden and it will continue to keep time

in the background.

Units Exercise Tests support both standard and metric units. Units can be toggled by hitting the Android menu button and selecting “standard/metric.” The default unit state can also be changed in the user settings accessible via the main menu by selecting “Settings.”
