DIALOG: TAMINO: Where am I? Am I alive?

How? That vile serpent. (hearing something) What’s that? No. 2 ARIA PAPAGENO: I’m the bird catcher, yes, that’s me, always merry. I’m known as Bird catcher to young and old in all the land. I set my decoys and whistle my birdcalls, So I can be happy and jolly, for all the birdies are mine. I’m the bird catcher, yes, that’s me, always merry. I’m known as Bird catcher to young and old in all the land. I wish I had a net for girls; I’d catch them by the dozen. I’d lock them in with me, and all the girls would be mine. If all the girls were mine alone, some I’d trade for high-grade sugar, then to the one I liked the best, I’d give all the sugar she wanted. Then she’d kiss me tenderly; we’d be husband and wife. She’d fall asleep in my arms, and I’d cradle her like a child. DIALOG: Tamino: Hello there! Papageno: Yes? Tamino: Tell me, my cheerful friend, Who are you? Papageno: Who am I? (Stupid question!) A human, like you. And who, I might ask, are you? Tamino: Then I might answer that I am of princely blood. Papageno: That’s over my head. Please explain so I can understand. Tamino: They call me Prince, because my father is a King, ruler of many countries and peoples. Thousands. Papageno: Thousands? Tamino: Indeed. And what do you do? Papageno: In trade. I catch birds for the Queen of the Night and her ladies, and in return they give me food and drink.

Page 3: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Tamino: The Queen of the Night? Tell me, good friend: Have you seen this queen? Papageno: Seen the Queen of the night? Tamino: (Aside) This has to be the magnificent Queen my father talked about. Tamino: Are you the one who saved me from this awful snake. Papageno: Snake!? Tamino: How did you slay this monster? You are unarmed. Papageno: Unarmed? The strength of my hands is my armament! Tamino: So you strangled it? Papageno: Strangled! (Aside) I never knew I was such a hero. 3 women: Papageno. Tamino: Who are these ladies? Papageno: I can’t say exactly, because I don’t know. But I do know that every day they take my birds and give me wine and bread and fruit. Tamino: They are very beautiful. 3 women: Papageno. Papageno: (Whispers) Shh. Don’t let them hear us. Loudly You ask are they beautiful? I say, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful in my life. (Whispers) That should keep them happy. 3 women: Papageno. Papageno: (Aside) What did I do wrong today? Here ladies. Look at the fine birds I’ve brought you! 1st woman: Today, for the first time, the Queen sends you pure, clear water instead of wine. 2nd woman: And instead of bread, she told me to give you this stone. Papageno: What? I should eat stone? 3rd woman: And instead of sweet figs, I have this lock for your mouth. 1st woman: Why has the Queen imposed such exquisite punishment?... 2nd woman: To make sure that you will never again lie to strangers.

Page 4: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

3rd woman: and that you will never take credit for others’ brave deeds. 1st woman: Now tell us: did you kill this snake? Papageno: Shakes his head. 2nd woman: Then who did? Papageno: Shrugs his shoulders. 3rd woman: It was the three of us, young man, who set you free. The great Queen sends you a gift: This portrait is the image of her daughter. If you are moved by her features, then happiness, honor, and glory shall be yours. Goodbye. 2nd woman: Goodbye, Papageno:! No. 3 ARIA TAMINO: This portrait is incredibly beautiful. No one has ever seen such beauty. I feel this divine portrait filling my heart with new passion! I don’t know what to call it, but I feel it burning like fire. Could this possibly be love? Yes, yes! It can only be love. Love. Only love. I wish I could find her. I wish she were standing here now. If she were here, warm and pure, what would I do? I would hug her fervently, and she would be mine forever. DIALOG: 2nd woman: The Queen is ready to grant your wish. She says, 3rd woman: “If this Prince is as bold and valiant as he is tender, then my daughter is saved.” Tamino: Saved? What do you mean? Is she in danger? 1st woman: A powerful, evil man named Sarastro has abducted Pamina:. That is her name. Tamino: Pamina! Pamina. Kidnapped. In some evil man’s hands— maybe… at this very moment... I can’t stand to think of it. 3 women: Quiet, young man. Tamino: Tell me, ladies, where can this Sarastro be found?

Page 5: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

1st woman: In a lush valley just beyond our mountains. He has a magnificent palace, but very carefully guarded. Tamino: Oh God, what was that? 1st woman: Our Queen is coming. (Thunder) 3 women: Here she comes. (Thunder) She’s here! No. 4 (scene 6) ARIA QUEEN OF THE NIGHT: You have nothing to fear, dear son, You are innocent, wise, and pious. A bold young man like you is exactly what is needed To ease an anxious mother’s heart. I am worried half to death about my missing daughter. All my joy has vanished since that villain abducted her. I can’t get her look of terror, her shocked expression, Her trembling shoulders, out of my mind. I keep hearing her sobbing, “Help me! Help me!” Her plea was in vain; I wasn’t strong enough to save her. You, yes, you will go and set her free. You will go to rescue my daughter! And you will be our victorious hero, So she will be yours forever. DIALOG: Tamino: Can what I have seen and heard be real? No. 5 (Scene 7) QUINTET The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET The Queen pardons you. By her authority I release you. Now Papageno: may speak again? Yes, chatter away. But no more lies! I’ll never lie! Never, never, never!

Page 6: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

This lock will serve as a warning. If we could lock the mouths of all the liars, instead of hatred, slander, and cruelty, we would have love and brotherhood. Here, Prince, take this gift. It’s from our Queen. The magic flute will protect you, and sustain you through the greatest adversity. With it, you’ll have full power to transform human passions. The sorrowful will find joy. The lonely will find love. Oh! A flute like this is worth more than gold and crowns. When it plays, human joy and satisfaction flourish. Now, beautiful ladies, if I may, I’ll take my leave. You could leave, but the Queen has decided that you should stay with the Prince, go with him to Sarastro’s castle. Oh, no! Thank you very much! You’ve already told me how vicious he is. I’m sure Sarastro wouldn’t hesitate to pluck me, roast me, and feed me to the dogs. The Prince will protects you, only trust in him. And for that, you shall be his servant. To hell with the Prince. I value my life! In the end, I swear, he’ll steal away from me like a thief. Here, take this treasure, it’s for you. Oh! Oh! What is it? Listen to the little bells ringing. Can I play it? Certainly! Yes, of course. Silver bells, magic flutes—all required for your/our protection. Good bye! We have to go.Good bye! See you later. Now tell us, lovely ladies… How do we find this castle? Three young boys, beautiful and wise, will go with you. They will guide you and advise you. Be sure to follow their advice. Three young boys, beautiful and wise, will go with us. They will guide us and advise us.

Page 7: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Be sure to follow their advice. So farewell. We have to go. Goodbye. DIALOG Scene 9: Slave #1 Our cruel tyrant will be dead by morning when Sarastro learns Pamina escaped right under his nose. Slave #2 The gods have heard my prayers. Slave #3 I’ve always said that one day we’ll be avenged and the evil Monostatos punished. Monostatos You! Girls! Get me something to tie her up with. No. 6 (scene 11) TRIO Come on in, my pretty little dove. Oh, I’m in such agony, so miserable. Your life is over. I’m not afraid to die. I’m just sad that my poor mother will surely be killed by her grief. Hey, slaves! Fasten those shackles! My fury will soon be the end of you. Oh, just let me die! It’s clear you have no compassion! Go on! Get out! Leave me alone with her. Where am I? Where would I wish to be? Aha! There are people here. I’ll join the party. Such a beauty, so young and pure, whiter than snow. Huh! It’s the devil! Have pity! Save me! DIALOG Scene 14 : Papageno: Ah, There she is: The beautiful lady in the picture. Pamina: Who are you? Papageno: A messenger from the Queen.

Page 8: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Pamina: My mother? What’s your name? Papageno: Papageno. Pamina: Papageno. So you know my sweet gentle mother? Papageno: If you are the daughter of the Queen of the Night—then yes. Pamina: Oh, that’s me. Papageno: Let me just be sure.... Eyes black: Check. Lips red: Check. Hair blonde: Check. Everything matches except for hands and feet. You have hands and feet, but they aren’t in the painting. Pamina: Let me see.... Yes, it’s me. How did you get it? Papageno: Well, it’s a long story, but I have to tell you. This morning I came to your mother’s palace to make my usual delivery... Pamina: Delivery? Papageno: I’ve been delivering beautiful birds to the palace for years. So just as I’m handing them over, a strange man appears. He’s very handsome, and says we can call him Prince. He makes such an impression on your mother that she gives him your picture and tells him to go save you. In an instant he agrees to go, and he falls in love with you. Pamina: In love? With me?! You mean he loves me? Papageno: Of course. And his great love for you supplied us the motivation to come here and find you.

Pamina: But then, tell me, why doesn’t he come? Papageno: For safety, the prince sent me ahead. Papageno: What if this is a trap? What if you’re a thug who Sarastro has sent to trick me? Papageno: Me? Pamina: Forgive me. You really are a very sensitive fellow. Papageno: That I am, but what good does it do me?

What I’d give to share my happy times with someone I love. Pamina: You poor fellow. You have no wife?

Page 9: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Papageno: Not even have a girlfriend! Pamina: Be patient; You’ll have a girlfriend before you know it. Papageno: I sure hope so! No. 7 DUET Pamina: A man cannot feel love unless he has a good heart. Papageno: A woman’s first duty is to accept those sweet urges. BOTH: We should rejoice in love. We can only live by love. Pamina: A loved one eases every struggle, and is worth any sacrifice. Papageno: Love enlivens every day, and sustains nature’s cycle. BOTH: Love is the highest calling for a husband and wife Man and woman, woman and man: God blesses their love. No. 8 (Scene 15) FINALE THREE BOYS This path will take you to your goal, but you, young man, must be courageous. So heed our advice: be firm, tolerant, and discreet. Tamino: Tell me boys: will I be able to rescue Pamina:? 3B That is not for us to say: be firm, tolerant, and discreet. In short, remember to be a man and you will succeed. Tamino: May these boys’ wisdom be etched forever into my heart. Where am I now? What’s going to happen to me? Is this the home of the gods? These portals, these columns show skill, industry, and art; Where action is lauded and idleness is scorned, vice cannot easily hold sway. I will make my entrance boldly. My purpose is noble and honest and pure. Tremble, spineless villain; saving Pamina: is my duty. PRIEST Go back! Tamino: Go back? Go back? Let’s try over here. PRIEST Go back! Tamino: Again, “Go back?!” Here’s another door. Maybe it will work.

Page 10: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

PRIEST Where are you going, daring stranger? What do you seek in the sanctuary? Tamino: I’m here to find love and virtue. PRIEST High-sounding words. How do you expect to find them? You won’t be able to find love and virtue while death and vengeance inflame you. Tamino: I want vengeance only on the villain. PRIEST You’re not likely to find that with us. Tamino: Sarastro reigns here? PRIEST Yes, yes, Sarastro is in charge here. Tamino: But not in the Temple of Wisdom? PRIEST Yes, the Temple of Wisdom is in his charge, too. Tamino: Then everything here is a fraud! PRIEST Then you’ll be going? Tamino: Yes, I will leave, happy and free. I don’t need your temple. PRIEST Explain yourself, please. Someone has deceived you. Tamino: If Sarastro lives here, that’s all I need to know. PRIEST If you value your life, stay there and explain! So you hate Sarastro? Tamino: I hate him forever, yes. PRIEST Then tell me your reason. Tamino: He is a monster, a tyrant! PRIEST What is your proof of that? Tamino: A woman who is crushed by grief and sadness. PRIEST So a woman has charmed you? A woman is nothing but talk. Do you believe that prattle? Oh, if only Sarastro were here to explain his actions to you. Tamino: I think his actions were clear enough: Didn’t he rip Pamina: savagely out of her mother’s arms?

Page 11: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

PRIEST Yes, my son, there is some truth to that. Tamino: Where is she—the one he has stolen? Has she already been offered as some kind of sacrifice? PRIEST Of that, dear boy, I may not tell you just now. Tamino: Enough of this riddle! Just tell me straight. PRIEST My tongue is constrained by oath and duty! Tamino: When will this veil be lifted so I can see clearly? PRIEST Only when the hand of friendship has led you into the shrine of everlasting union. Tamino: When will this darkness lift and allow a glimmer of light? (Chorus men, off) Soon. Soon, young one—or never. Tamino: Soon? Soon or never, you say? Alright, you unseen seers, at least tell me if Pamina: is alive. (Chorus men, off) Pamina… Pamina... is alive. Tamino: She’s alive? Really? I thank you for that! If I can work this, I’ll praise its power with every note. How powerful your magic sound is, sweet flute, because when you play, even the wild animals are joyful. Only Pamina: still stays away. Pamina:... Pamina:... Hear me... Hear me! It’s hopeless. Hopeless. Where? Where can I find you? Ha! That’s Papageno:’s tune. Maybe—he’s already found Pamina:! Maybe—he’s bringing her to me! Maybe! Maybe—that tune will lead me to her. Scene 16 Pamina / Papageno Quick feet and keen nerves will protect us from the villain’s cunning and fury. Let’s find Tamino: before they catch us. It’s my gallant youth! Shh! Quiet! This will do better. Could anything make me happier? Tamino: has already heard us. That’s his reply. What luck if I could find him! Come on! Be quick. Let’s go!

Page 12: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Scene 17 MONOSTATOS Come on! Be quick! Let’s go! Ha! I’ve caught you! Over here with the irons and chains! I will teach you a lesson for deceiving Monostatos! Bring the ropes and tethers. Hey, slaves, over here! Oh, now we’re done for! Hey, you slaves, come here! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Okay, beautiful bells, do your thing. Sing your tune until their ears ring. Oh! What a glorious sound! Sweeter than I’ve ever heard. La la ra…. I’ve never heard, never seen anything like it! PAMINA/ PAPAGENO If every good man could play such bells his foes would simply fade away. and we’d all live in sweetest harmony, Only such harmonious friendship eases all hardships. Without such sympathy, Earth is lost. Scene 18 (Chorus Men join) CORO Hail Sarastro! Long live Sarastro! Papageno: What do you suppose this means? I’m shaking with fear! Pamina: My friend, it’s all over for us now. Here comes Sarastro. Papageno: If I were a little mouse, I’d run and hide. If I were a tiny snail, I would creep into my house. Dear one, what shall we say? Pamina: The truth, even if it’s a crime. TUTTI CORO Hail Sarastro! Long live Sarastro! To his authority we gladly yield. May he enjoy a long life as a man of wisdom. He is our hero, to whom we dedicate our lives. Pamina: Sir, I am guilty as charged. I tried to escape your power. But you really can’t blame me. The wicked Monostatos demanded that I love him. So you see, Sir, that’s why I had to escape.

Page 13: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

SARASTRO Get up and stop worrying. I can see into your heart: I know you are deeply in love with another. I can’t force you to love me, but neither will I set you free. Pamina: I have a filial duty to go, because my mother… SARASTRO Is in my power! Your happiness would soon end if I left you in her hands. Pamina: Mother’s name sounds sweet to me! She... She is... SARASTRO a proud woman. Every woman needs a man to guide her heart. Otherwise she will be tempted to forget her place. Scene 19 MONOSTATOS Okay, young man, we’re here. This is Sarastro, our master. Pamina: There he is! I can’t believe it! Tamino: There she is! It’s not a dream! Pamina: I’ll hold him in my arms

Tamino: I’ll hold her in my arms P/T if it’s the last thing I do. TUTTI CORO What’s the meaning of this? MONOSTATOS What impertinence! Break it up! Now you’ve gone too far! Your slave kneels at your feet. Punish this brazen delinquent! Look at the impudence of this kid: By the wiles of this weird bird, he planned to kidnap Pamina:. I’m the only one who saw through the ruse. You know me, my diligence... SARASTRO deserves a fitting reward. Hey! Give this gentleman immediately... Your favor makes me rich already! ...no more than 77 strokes on the soles of his feet! MONOSTATOS Really, Sir, I don’t want any reward. SARASTRO No, don’t thank me. I’m only doing my job. TUTTI CORO Long live Sarastro with his divine wisdom. He rewards and punishes at the same time. SARASTRO Take these two strangers into our Temple of Examination.

Page 14: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

But cover their heads. They must first be purified. TUTTI CORO If virtue and justice spread glory on the road of life, then earth will be as heaven, and mortals will be like gods.

Page 15: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Act II No. 9 (Scene 1) MARCH DIALOG: SARASTRO Welcome, servants of the Temple of Wisdom, consecrated by the great gods Osiris and Isis. Young Tamino, virtuous, discreet, compassionate, the son of a king, yearns to become enlightened by knowledge. It is our sacred duty to support him in this task. And the gods have chosen gentle Pamina to be

Tamino’s partner. That is why I took her from her mother. Her mother seems regal, but her intention is to destroy our temple. Our best hope to avoid that lies in this young couple. We must nurture Tamino and Pamina into our circle

and nurture them. I thank you for your assent. No. 10 ARIA/CHORUS SARASTRO O Isis and Osiris, bestow the spirit of wisdom on this pair. You who guide the wanderer, give them the power of patience when facing danger. CORO MEN Give them the power of patience when facing danger. SARASTRO Let them learn from success in their coming trials, and if they should perish, then honor their bold spirits with a place in your eternal home. DIALOG - from page 164 (scene 18) in Barenreiter P/V Sarastro Tamino will say a final farewell to you. Pamina: A final farewell? NO. 19 TRIO (from page 164 in Barenreiter P/V) PAMINA/TAMINO/SARASTRO Does that mean I’ll never see you again? He will be happy to see you again. You have such terrible dangers to face! The gods will offer their protection. You have such terrible dangers to face! The gods will offer their protection. I’m so afraid you’re going to die; I have such a bad feeling! The gods always have their way. All we can do is follow. If you loved me the way I love you, you wouldn’t be so calm. Believe me, my love is

Believe me, his love is

Page 16: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

every bit as intense as yours, and I will be faithful forever. and he will be faithful forever. It’s time for you to separate. Tamino: must leave again. Parting is such bitter pain. DIALOG: Scene 2-3 Tamino: What an awful night! Papageno: I have a bad feeling about this whole thing. Tamino: Come on, Papageno, be a man. Speaker Hello strangers. What are you looking for? Tamino: Friendship. And love. Speaker Are you prepared to risk everything fighting for them? Tamino: Yes! Speaker Will you fight too, Papageno? For the love of wisdom? Papageno: Fighting’s not my thing. Sleep, food, and drink are all I need... And maybe a nice, pretty woman to love. 2nd Priest You’ll never have those unless you pass our tests. Papageno: Then I will remain single, thanks. 2nd Priest What if Sarastro has chosen a woman for you, who matches you perfectly in coloring and dress? Papageno: What do I care?... Wait... Is she young? 2nd Priest Young and beautiful. Papageno: What’s her name? 2nd Priest Papagena. Papageno: What?! Papa...? 2nd Priest Papagena. Papageno: Now you’ve got me curious.

Page 17: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

2nd Priest You may see her, but you must not speak to her until the test is over. Are you strong enough to keep silent? Papageno: Yes! 2nd Priest Then I’ll introduce you. Speaker The gods have set the same test for you, Prince. You will see Pamina:, but you must never speak to her. Your trials begin now. No. 11 (scene 5) DUET SPEAKER/PRIEST Watch out for women’s wiles: That is a man’s chief duty. Many a wise man has been charmed into error without even realizing, only to be abandoned in the end, his devotion repaid with scorn, pleading to no avail, death and despair his only destiny. No. 12 (Scene 5) QUINTET THREE LADIES How? How? How? are you in this terrifying place? Never, never, never will you ever return to happiness. Tamino:, you are sworn to death. And Papageno:, you are lost, too. Papageno: No, no, no, that’s going way too far! Tamino: Papageno:, shut up! You’re not allowed to speak to women! Papageno: Didn’t you hear? We’re both about to die! Tamino: Be still! I mean it! Quiet! Papageno: I’m quiet. Always quiet. Still quiet. Quite still. 3 LADIES The Queen is very close. She snuck into the temple. Papageno: What?! How? She’s in the temple? Tamino: Shut up! Really—don’t talk! Must you be so impetuous? Have you already forgotten the oath you swore? 3 LADIES Tamino:, listen. You are lost. Think about the Queen. There are lots of whisperings about this priest’s heresy. Tamino: (A wise man will check, and ignore common gossip.)

Page 18: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

3 LADIES There are lots of whisperings about this priest’s heresy. I heard anyone who joins that order will go straight to hell. Papageno: That’s outrageous! Tamino:, is it true? Tamino: It’s just women’s gossip, that someone has spread to scare them. Papageno: But the Queen has said the same thing. She is a woman, with a woman’s mind. Trust me on this. Put it out of your mind. Stay focused on your duty and keep your wits about you. 3 LADIES Why are you so aloof? Even Papageno: isn’t speaking. Say something! Papageno: I wish I could.... Tamino: Quiet! Papageno: It’s just that I really... Tamino: Quiet! Papageno: I am not allowed to speak. It’s terribly humiliating! Tamino: You are not allowed to speak. It’s terribly humiliating! TUTTI Forget it. Let’s go. It’s a shame they aren’t interested. It’s clear nobody cares to chat with us. Too bad they must leave us. Too bad we must leave them. It’s clear nobody cares to chat with us. There is a man of principle. He thinks before he speaks. CORO MEN They defile this sacred space. Send these women to hell. PAPAGENO: Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! DIALOG Scene 6: SPEAKER Bravo, young man. Your wise, mature behavior has prevailed. You may continue your journey with a pure heart. Come with me. 2ND PRIEST You. Pull yourself together. Be a man!

PAPAGENO: What’s the point of all this torment, if the gods have already chosen a Papagena for me. 2ND PRIEST Let’s go. No. 13 (Scene 17) ARIA Monostatos All the world enjoys love’s pleasures: smiles and laughter, hugs and kisses. Must I do without these pleasures just because my skin is black? Can’t there be someone to love me? I know how to treat a woman; I would treat her very well. Life without a loving woman might as well be life in Hell. I am human, so I’m yearning for a woman’s tender kiss. Moon above, can you forgive that she who stole my heart is so white? Pale perfection: I must kiss her! Moon above, if you’re offended, close your eyes and let it be. DIALOG (Scene 8): The Queen: Back off! Pamina: Oh my god! Pamina: Mother! Mother! Oh, my mother! The Queen: Where is the young prince I sent you? Pamina: Tamino: has rejected me to join Sarastro’s order. The Queen: Here. Take this dagger. It has Sarastro’s name on it. You are going to kill him! He betrayed your father and stole from me. Pamina: What?! Mother, I don’t…. The Queen Not a word! No. 14 ARIA Queen Of The Night My heart is seething with vengeance. Death and despair consume me.

Page 20: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

If Sarastro doesn’t suffer my revenge by your hand, Then you are no daughter of mine. You’ll be disowned, abandoned and forsaken forever, every natural bond revoked, if you don’t paint Sarastro’s face with the pallor of death. Watch my revenge, you gods! Hear a mother’s fervent vow! DIALOG (Scenes 9 - 12): Pamina: Can I commit murder?

Monostatos: I heard it all. I’ll take that.Your life is now in my hands. I know only one way for you to survive. Pamina: Do I dare ask: What might that be? Monostatos: All you have to do is love me. Pamina: You? Never! Monostatos: Love or death: what will it be? Pamina: All my love is for Tamino! Monostatos: Well, then death it is! Sarastro Leave us, Monostatos. Sarastro Leave us! Pamina: Honorable Sarastro, please forgive my mother... Sarastro I know all about it. I know she is wandering around the temple, plotting revenge against me and mankind. You will soon see how I deal with your mother.

May the heavens grant Tamino: courage and strength; then you will be together, and your mother can slink back to her castle.

No. 15 ARIA SARASTRO Within these hallowed halls there is no place for revenge. and if anyone has fallen, love will show him the way. He can walk with a friend toward a better land. Within these hallowed walls where we all love each other, there cannot be a traitor, for enemies are forgiven. Any who don’t believe this don’t deserve to be human.

Page 21: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

DIALOG (Scenes 13 -15): Speaker Remember the word: Silence! 2nd Priest Farewell. Papageno: Tamino? Tamino: Shh! Papageno: (Sarcastic) What a great life! Tamino: Shhh!! Papageno: It’s okay to talk to myself, isn’t it?

Tamino: Shhhh!!! Papageno: I’m thirsty… Is that for me? Woman Yes, my angel. Papageno: Here, you old hag, sit down with me. This wait is tiresome. Pardon me for asking, but just how old are you? Woman How old? Papageno: Yes. Woman Eighteen years and two minutes. Papageno: Ha ha ha. So you’re just a young gal. Do you have a lover, too? Woman I certainly do. Papageno: Is he the same age as you? Woman He’s 10 years older. Papageno: What’s your lover’s name? Woman Papageno:. Papageno: Papageno:? So where is this Papageno:? Woman He’s sitting right here, my angel. Papageno: So I’m your lover?

Page 22: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Woman Yes, my angel. Papageno: Tell me your name. Woman My name is… (Loud thunder!) Papageno: I won’t say another word! No. 16 (Scene 16) TRIO THREE BOYS Welcome once again, you men, into Sarastro’s realm. Here are the flute and bells that were taken from you. If our food is to your liking, you may eat and drink freely. At our third meeting we’ll joy-fully celebrate your victory. Courage, Tamino:! You’re almost there. You, Papageno:, keep your mouth shut! DIALOG Scenes 17-18: Papageno: Let’s eat! Tamino: You can play your flute if you want, but I’m hungry. Pamina: You’re here?! Oh, thank god! I heard the flute, and followed the sound as fast as I could. But you’re sad? You won’t even speak to your Pamina:?

Tamino: ... Pamina: What? You want me to go? You don’t love me any more? Tamino: … Pamina: I should just leave, without even knowing why?

Tamino, my dear, dear boy, did I offend you somehow?

Oh, please don’t break my heart like this. Cruel. You really don’t love me? Tamino: ... Pamina: Papageno, tell me what’s going on. Papageno: ... Pamina: Oh, god! Not you too! (they exit)

Page 23: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

No. 17 ARIA PAMINA: Oh, I feel them draining away, all my love and happiness. Hours of hoped-for bliss will never come back to my heart. Look, Tamino:, at these tears that flow only for you. If you cannot return love for love, I’ll find my rest in death. No. 18 (Scene 20) CHORUS CHORUS MEN O Isis and Osiris! What a blessing! The brilliant sun dispels the gloom of night. The noble youth will soon feel his life renewed. He will soon be eager to serve us wholeheartedly. His spirit is bold, his heart is pure. Soon, very soon, he will be entirely worthy of us. DIALOG Scene 21: Sarastro Prince, so far, you have proven brave and wise. We have just two more dangerous trials for you. If your heart still pounds for Pamina:, and if you would be a wise ruler, let the gods guide you. No. 19 TRIO Moved to earlier in Act II DIALOG Scenes 22 – 23: Papageno: Tamino... Tamino. I’ll never ever leave you again! A voice Go back! (Thunder) Papageno: Oh my god! Where should I go?

A voice Go back! (Thunder) Papageno: Why did I even come on this stupid trip? Speaker Fool! You can never be a member of Sarastro’s order. Papageno: Well, I’m certainly in good company! What I would really like right now is a good glass of wine! Speaker Is that the only thing in this world you could wish for? Papageno: That’s about it, for now. (Wine appears.)

Page 24: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Papageno: Wow, that was quick! Mmm. Fabulous!... Heavenly!... Ohhh, this is divine. I’m so happy I could fly to the sun. If I had wings, of course. Ha! What else would I wish for… I wish... I would like... I wish I knew what else to wish for... No. 20 ARIA PAPAGENO: A mistress, or a little wife, is Papageno:’s wish. A gentle little cooing dove would bring me happiness. Then I’d love to eat and drink; I’d be the peer of princes. I’d live like a philosopher, and feel like I’m in heaven. I’d be the peer of princes. I’d live like a philosopher, and feel like I’m in heaven. A mistress, or a little wife, is Papageno:’s wish. A gentle little cooing dove is happiness for me. If there is no one to love me, I will let the flames devour me. But just when I feel the kiss of a woman, I will be okay again. A mistress, or a little wife, is Papageno:’s wish. A gentle little cooing dove is happiness for me. Of all the girls in all the world, can’t there be one to love me? Can’t one, even out of pity? Or else solitude will kill me. DIALOG Scene 24 – 25: Woman: Here I am, my angel. Papageno: You will take pity on me? Woman: Yes, my angel. And if you promise to be faithful to me forever, then you’ll see how tenderly a wife can love you. Papageno: Let’s not be in too big a hurry, my dear angel. A union like this needs its due consideration. Woman: Papageno:, I wouldn’t hesitate if I were you; Take my hand or you may be confined here forever, with nothing to but bread and water. Papageno: Forever? Woman: Forever! Papageno: Forever? Bread and Water? Well, I guess I’d rather have a wrinkled old woman than none at all.

Page 25: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Here’s my hand, and my vow to be faithful to you always (Aside.) As long as I don’t find someone prettier. Woman: Let me hear you swear it. Papageno: I swear it! Woman: (Transforms) Papageno: Pa — Pa — Papagena! (Goes to hug her.) Speaker: Not so fast, young lady. He is not worthy of you yet. No. 21 (Scene 27) FINALE THREE BOYS Soon the sun will gleam to begin a new day. Soon superstition will recede into its own darkness. Soon the man of wisdom will prevail. O benevolent peace, descend on us, return to our hearts, then earth will be as heaven, and mortals will be like gods. But look, Pamina: is suffering in despair. So where is she? She is going out of her mind. She suffers the anguish of unrequited love. Let’s do something to assuage her broken heart; After all, her fate matters to us. If only her young man were here.... Here she comes. Let’s move aside and see what she does. Scene 27 Pamina: So you’ll be my bridegroom. You can finally quell my grief. 3 BOYS: Did you hear that? The poor girl is about to lose it. Pamina: Have a little patience my love, we’ll be wedded soon. 3 BOYS: Her madness is consuming her.

You can see suicide written on her face. Wait, dear girl. Look at us!

Pamina: I want to die, because the man I can never hate,

can abandon his beloved. My mother gave me this.

3 BOYS: Suicide is a sin. God will punish you. Pamina: Better to die by this steel than by rejected love.

Page 26: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Mother, this is your doing. I’m haunted by your curse! 3 BOYS: Dear one, will you come with us? Pamina: Why? I can’t take it any more. Faithless youth, goodby.

See? Pamina:’s death will be on you. Let this blade end my miserable life.

3 BOYS: Wait, you poor girl. Just stop!

If Tamino: could see you now, he would die of sadness, because you are his only love!

Pamina: What? He felt love, but kept it hidden from me?

He turned away from me! Why didn’t he even speak to me? 3 BOYS: We can’t tell you that, but you’ll be amazed

when we show you how much he adores you. how he’s even willing to face death for you. Come with us. We’ll take you to him.

Pamina: Take me to him. I have to see him! 3 BOYS / Pamina:

Two hearts burning with love can’t be torn apart by human flaws. Any who would separate them try in vain. The gods themselves defend their union.

Scene 28 ARMED MEN Whoever makes his way through the obstacles of life is purified by fire, water, air, and earth. If he can overcome the horrors of death he can soar from earth up to heaven. Enlightened, he can then devote himself entirely to the mysteries of the gods. Tamino: No fear of death will divert me from the path of virtue.

Loose your terrors on me; I’m happy to take them on. Pamina: Tamino, stop! I have to talk to you. Tamino: What? Did I hear Pamina? Yes, that’s her voice. Tamino/ ARMED MEN Good, she can come with me, Good, she can go with you,

Page 27: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Now fate can’t keep us apart, Now fate can’t keep you apart, even if we’re facing death. even if you’re facing death. Tamino: Can I speak to her?

ARMED MEN Yes, you may talk with her. Tamino/ ARMED MEN So glad to go together again, hand in hand, into the temple. A woman who is willing to confront darkness and death is worthy, and welcome to be confirmed in our order. Pamina: Tamino: mine! What total joy! Tamino: Pamina: mine! What total joy!

Here are the gates of terror, threatening danger and death. Pamina: I’m right by your side.I myself will lead you, as love guides me. Love may scatter roses on the path, but they have thorns. Play the magic flute; it will protect us on our way. It was magically carved by my father from the richest heartwood of an ancient oak, amidst thunder and lightning, wind and rain. Come on, play the flute to lead us on our dreadful way. TUTTI By the power of music we walk happily through the bleak night. MARCH (51 seconds) Pamina:/Tamino: We withstood the inferno, faced every peril bravely. Your tune kept us as safe in the flood as it did in the fire. MARCH Pamina/Tamino: Oh my god, this is incredible! Isis gives us our happiness. Triumph is yours, noble duo. TUTTI CORO You have vanquished the danger. You have earned Isis’ blessing. Come, come, enter the temple. SCENE 29

Page 28: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

Papageno: Papagena! Papagena! Papagena! My little wife! My dove! My beauty! It’s hopeless! Oh, I’ve lost her. I’ve been a loser since I was born. I jabbered and jabbered—that was so stupid. So it serves me right. I got what I deserve. Since I tasted that wine... and saw that beautiful woman... my heart has been burning: pangs here, twinges there. Papagena! My heartthrob! Papagena! My little dove! It’s no good. It’s hopeless! I’m fed up with my life! Death will quench the fire in my heart, no matter how hot. I will decorate that tree, by tying my neck to it, because my life just isn’t any fun any more. Good night, hateful world. Your cruelty has beaten me, leaving me with no pretty little girl. That’s how it is, so I die. Beautiful ladies, think of me. If just one of you could show me some compassion before I hang, I’d be willing to drop the whole idea. Just shout it out: Yes or No! I don’t hear you. It’s awfully quiet. So this is what you want? Papageno:, end your sorry life! Well? I’m waiting.... You have till the count of three. One, Two, Three. So that’s how it is. There’s nothing now to stop me. Good night cruel world. 3 BOYS Hold it! Papageno:, don’t be a fool! You only live once. You have a good life; enjoy it! Papageno: Easy for you to say. You can laugh. But if your heart burned like mine, you’d chase girls too. 3 BOYS So play your little bells. That will bring the girl for you. Papageno: I’m an idiot! I forgot all about that magic thing!

Ring out, little bells, ring out! I have to see my little woman. Ring, sweet bells, ring! Make a mate for me! Ring, sweet bells, ring! Bring my woman here. Ring, sweet bells, ring! Make a mate for me! Ring, sweet bells, ring! Bring my woman here.

Page 29: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

3 BOYS Now, Papageno, take a look around. Papageno/A Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa, Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa, Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-Papagena. Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-Papageno:. Papageno/A Are you really all mine now?

Now I really am all yours. Now you’ll be my loving wife?

Now you’ll be my lovey-dove. What a joy it will be, if the gods will favor us, to have some babies to love; such darling little babies. First a little Papageno:. Then a little Papagena. Then another Papageno:. Then another Papagena. It is our highest hope that many, many Papageno:s and Papagenas should be a blessing to their parents. It is our highest hope that many, many Papagenos and Papagenas should be a blessing to their parents. Papagena, Papageno:, be a blessing to their parents, SCENE 30 MONOSTATOS / QUEEN OF THE NIGHT / 3 LADIES Now very quiet, quiet, quiet. Soon we’ll enter the temple. MONOSTATOS But first, keep your word! Make your daughter my wife. QUEEN OF THE NIGHT / 3 LADIES My word is good. I decree that my child shall be your wife. Her child shall be your wife. My child shall be your wife. MONOSTATOS But hush! What’s that awful sound? It’s like thunder, and roaring water. QUEEN OF THE NIGHT / 3 LADIES Yes, it’s frightening. Like the rumbling of a huge storm. MONOSTATOS / QUEEN OF THE NIGHT / 3 LADIES Now they’re in the temple. We should attack them there, to wipe those villains off the face of the earth

Page 30: ACT I - Indy Choir...The poor man can’t speak of punishment, if he’s lost his speech. I can’t do anything for you but complain because I’m powerless to help. SCENE 8 QUINTET

with blazing fire and flashing sword. To you, great Queen of the Night, we pledge ourselves for your revenge. (Thunder) We are all plunged into eternal darkness. Our resolve is shattered, destroyed! SARASTRO Sunshine drives away the darkness, Hooray for our heroes, who have banished the night. Thank you, thank you, thank you Osiris, Thank you, thank you, thank you Isis.
