What is Sporting Schools?Sporting Schools is an Australian Government and Australian Sports Commission (ASC) initiative which will fund sporting activities before, during and after-school in more than 5,700 schools and engage with 850,000 children hoping to encourage them to do more sport-based activities. Commencing in Term 3 2015, Sporting Schools is an evolution of the Active After-School Communities (AASC) program.

A key feature of Sporting Schools is the use of National Sporting Organisation (NSO) endorsed sporting programs. LaunchPad is the Gymnastics Australia junior participation program which aims to increase sport participation, develop children’s fundamental movement skills and all-round physical and brain development.

We anticipate LaunchPad will provide a greater connection for Australian children with gymnastics and one that we hope will provide a lifelong love of our sport. To ensure your club is prepared to take full opportunity of Sporting Schools it is encouraged that you are LaunchPad accredited. To find out how to become LaunchPad accredited, refer to ‘How to Become LaunchPad Accredited’ within this guide.

Why do we Need Sporting Schools? The ASC’s research (Play.Sport.Australia. participation game plan ) has shown that Australia is facing two significant issues:

Keeping sports relevant and viable; and Keeping Australians active and healthy.

Play.Sport.Australia. paints a compelling picture of how Australia has changed in the last decade and why sports need to adapt or risk becoming irrelevant. The challenge for sport now is how to respond to these changes without eroding what makes sport unique and appealing.

With one in four young people currently overweight or obese, the ASC will focus its efforts to get more Australians playing sport more regularly, try and build an understanding of the value of sport and boost lifelong participation in sport. Participating in sport develops skills and good habits that underpin lifelong physical fitness.

Why be Involved in Sporting Schools?Schools that successfully attain funding through Sporting Schools will be looking to connect with their local clubs and coaches who are endorsed by Gymnastics Australia.

This is a great opportunity to: Expose gymnastics to more kids in more schools;

The ASC recommend that clubs should look at charging between $30-65 per session. This may vary depending on the overhead costs you need to cover – how much you pay your coach, the number of coaches you need to deliver the session, travelling distance, if any equipment is provided, any additional requirements the schools may have and etc.

How to become LaunchPad accredited?Sporting Organisations will need to become LaunchPad accredited to be eligible to use the LaunchPad brand and deliver LaunchPad programs. This can be achieved by attaining the LaunchPad Stamp of Approval. This Stamp of Approval will allow everyone to recognize that this is a quality junior recreational gymnastics provider with quality coaches delivering a quality program.

To attain the Stamp of Approval a minimum of one current Intermediate Coach (in any gymsport) must first attend a LaunchPad: Zoom! Professional development workshop and post workshop complete a LaunchPad Blastoff audit for quality assurance.

The workshop is 2 hours long covers LaunchPad key objectives whilst assisting to develop a deeper understanding of fundamental gymnastics and its relation to physical activity and brain development.

Workshop participants will receive a participant manual, a twelve-month subscription to an online Lesson Plan Builder and the opportunity to purchase additional coaching resources at discounted prices. The workshop will count towards 2 updating points.

If you would like to become LaunchPad accredited and attend this workshop, please check for upcoming workshops or alternatively clubs can book in a one on one workshop for your coaches.

What do I Need to Consider?Delivery Parameters

As part of the Sporting Schools program schools will be required to ensure that programs are delivered within the following parameters:

Programs are run 4-7 sessions per term (negotiable with the school); Sessions are delivered before, during, or after school; Engage a minimum of 10 students per program each term; Deliver a minimum of 4 sessions per child; and Each session have a duration of 45-60 minutes.

How Much Funding Can Schools Receive?

Grants to schools will be determined by school population and anticipated participant numbers, therefore the funding allocated will vary from school to school. This funding is to be used to cover the costs of delivering a program (ie: coach costs, supervision etc.). Funding for equipment needs etc., to support the delivery of the Sporting School programs, can be applied for through the

Page 21: act.gymnastics.org.au · Web viewSporting Schools is an Australian Government and Australian Sports Commission (ASC) initiative which will fund sporting activities before, during

Sporting Initiative Grant. Schools are required to choose a minimum of one sport. If multiple sports are requested, the funding is distributed across all activities.

How Much Shall I Charge?

Gymnastics Australia has created a national Sporting Schools LaunchPad Gymnastics program package. Packages cater for a variety of funding models which are based on school populations. Clubs can determine their own coach payments, overhead costs, travelling distances etc.

Schools cannot charge participants and their parents under Sporting School. Whilst this is a great opportunity for Sporting Organisations/Club to access more paid employment opportunities, please be mindful that schools must operate within particular budgets.

What Should I Deliver?

Gymnastics Australia’s LaunchPad programs cater for children of all ages and are expertly designed to cater for all stages of physical, social and cognitive development. Each program is supported by ‘easy to use’ lesson plans for coaches and teachers that are safe, fun, require minimal equipment and aligns with the school curriculum.

Products on offer to schools through Sporting Schools include:

LaunchPad

GymFun and GymSkills AeroFun and AeroSkills (currently being developed) CheerFun and CheerSkills (currently being developed)

GymFun (5-8 year olds)

In GymFun, the focus is on fundamental movement patterns that help children progress into more advanced skills or sports. The games and activities in GymFun are safe and encourage children to work with others and build self-esteem.

GymSkills (8-12 year olds)

As children develop more control of their bodies through fundamental movement, more specific activities and skills are introduced. Students are encouraged to learn, reproduce and create more complex movement sequences.

These will be the programs that schools will choose from under the gymnastics banner on the Sporting Schools website. Although the Gymnastics Australia resources (see Resources) are there to support the delivery of these programs, it is not compulsory to follow these, however all gymnastics Sporting Schools programs should embody the LaunchPad philosophy.

Our RecommendationsWhere to Start?

We recommend you begin communicating with your local schools. Where possible, set up face to face meetings with the key individuals at the school (e.g. principal or HPE coordinator), to discuss Sporting Schools and how you could assist in delivering gymnastics. Also, remember that schools that are not a part of Sporting Schools can still hire you, and look to have someone deliver gymnastics.

You may already have successful relationships with schools in your area, but if not, you should use the aforementioned LaunchPad resources (manual, templates and information sheets) aimed at helping you to create links with schools that can help you get a foot in the door with your local school communities.

What to Consider?

What to take:o Video (TV Commercial)o Program Benefits flyer (available from: LaunchPad Club Resource CD > Promotion)o Curriculum Alignment Documento Business card/Contact detailso Club information

Have an ideal model of what would work best for you and the club Prepare to be flexible Do they know about Sporting Schools? Encourage them to register on the website and select

your club as the deliverer of gymnastics at their school

Potential Information You May Need

When would they like to deliver the program to students? o Before, during or after school? Preferable days and times?

What is their target age group for the program? What is the estimated number of students per session? Are there students with additional needs? What is their preferred delivery model?

Page 24: act.gymnastics.org.au · Web viewSporting Schools is an Australian Government and Australian Sports Commission (ASC) initiative which will fund sporting activities before, during

o If ‘in school’ delivery, what hall space and equipment do they have available?o If ‘in club’ delivery, explore the option of parents picking up students from the club

rather than travelling back to school if delivering an afternoon session. What is their preferred program duration?

o 45 or 60 minutes?

Delivery Models

‘In School’ deliveryo Sessions delivered at the school;o Often dependant on space and equipment availability.

‘In Club’ deliveryo Sessions delivered at the club;o Often dependant on transport options and time constraints.

Hybrid modelo A combination of both in school and in club delivery.

Although the majority of clubs encourage ‘In Club’ delivery, this is often dependant on the suitability of this option for the school. Prepare to be flexible and negotiate options with each individual school you work with.

Where an ‘In School’ delivery model is adopted, where possible encourage the last session to be delivered at the club. This provides the children with an opportunity to experience all the equipment a gymnastics club has to offer. This may also encourage schools to consider an in club delivery model in the future which can assist in attracting the new members.

Promoting Your Sporting Organisation/Club

Clubs linking with schools and delivering to numerous students, consider ways to promote your club and your regular club classes.

Ideas may include:

A school newsletter article, during program delivery; Free trial voucher to club class, for all students upon completion of a Sporting Schools program; ‘Come n Try’ Invitation for students to trial club classes (available from: LaunchPad Marketing

Portal > Promote My Club > Signage); Invite school to the club for an excursion; and Invite school contacts to club for a meeting.
