● Decline in physical appearance

Do you notice your parent is not performing activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, including brushing their teeth, dressing, and eating? Failure to perform these daily tasks may be a sign of depression, dementia, or even Alzheimer’s.

● A neglected home

Is the house a mess? Is there a stack of dirty dishes in the sink? Are lights not working? Stacks of mail everywhere? Major changes to the way your parents maintain their home may signal a decline in their mental or physical health.

Signs your aging parent may need assistance

● Memory loss

There are different levels of memory loss. I may forget where I placed my keys and have to look around the entire house in order to find them. An elderly person may have the same problem. Memory loss is a natural part of aging, but there is a difference between modest memory loss and more concerning memory loss. Examples of more severe memory loss are forgetting common words when speaking, getting lost in a familiar neighborhood, forgetting recently learned information, forgetting important dates or events, asking for the same information over and over, or increasingly needing to rely on memory aids and family members for things they used to handle on their own. Any of these more severe memory loss examples may signal the onset of dementia. If you are concerned about memory loss of your aging parent, you should schedule an appointment with their doctor.

● Unexplained weight loss

If you notice your aging parent losing weight unexpectedly, it could be a sign of more serious issues. Perhaps they are having trouble preparing meals due to difficulty finding the energy to cook, grasping the tools necessary to cook, or reading labels or directions on food products. This could result in malnutrition. People have told me to do the “hug test.” Give your parent a hug and if you notice there’s a lot less of them than there used to be, talk to them about it. It may be time to get assistance for them.

● Emotional issues

Is your parent in good spirits? Have you noticed a change in their attitude lately? Are they involved in social clubs and activities or has their involvement in those activities drastically declined? Do they hang out with friends or have they shut off contact with people they used to converse with? If you notice a change in your parent emotionally, it may be time to get them some help at home.
