Peterson Road Elementary is a neighborhood school serving 281 K-7 students. This rural school is steeped in tradition, with many families having had multiple generations complete elementary school at Peterson Road. As a result, the parental support provided by both the PAC and the parent volunteers is extremely strong. The PAC is an active supporter of school initiatives. Through their hard work and generosity Peterson Road was able to make upgrades to their technology.

Peterson Road values both athletics and the arts. Sports teams, running groups and “Healthy Buddies” are well attended, and the grade 4-5 students are exposed to the Ukulele, while the grade 6-7 students participate in band.

Academically, the school goals have transitioned from a focus on numeracy to goals based on literacy. A large number of students receive speech and language support as well as reading recovery, learning assistance and resource periods.

Peterson Road also houses “Strawberry Patch”, an onsite daycare facility and preschool facility.

Share and respond to student writing or topic suggestions

Publish student writing via flip books

Publish student exemplars on class websites

Use available software to enhance the writing process

Develop a digital library – create a bank of stories for our iPads in our Library

Develop a ‘core’ set of benchmarks that will guide our teaching and assessment at each grade level.

Determine the key concepts that should be taught at each grade level

so that we are not re-teaching, but rather scaffolding our learning

ACTIONS

Page 6: Action plan for learning Peterson road “creating hope and learning for all”

Produce a ‘common language’ that will be used throughout the grades when teaching writing strategies. Each student should understand the writing process, as well as, what it means to: pre-write, proofread, summarize, peer-edit and publish.

Focus on formative assessment to increase the standards of our published work.

Develop school based rubrics and ensure students understand these expectations

Create a bank of exemplars for student viewing and analysis

Dedicate additional instructional time to sharing and responding to student writing

ACTIONS

Page 7: Action plan for learning Peterson road “creating hope and learning for all”

Share success stories and frustrations

• Peterson Road will measure success by examining its DWA 5, FSA 4, and FSA 7 results.

• Peterson Road will measure success by increasing the number of staff and students who utilize writing blogs to support writing.

• Peterson Road will measure success through the number of students who have their work published or showcased on their class website.

• Peterson Road will create a set of sample writing assessments in September and compare those samples to samples collected mid year and at year end. The year end product can then be utilized by next teacher to guide teaching practice.
