1. Total pages for the report is between 12-15 (excluding the references and
appendices).
2. Follow the sub-topics as presented in the template.
3
Chapter 1: Introduction
(2-3 pages)
Introduction
(One paragraph to introduce Chapter 1)
Statement of the Problem
This should include (a) a clear statement that the problem exists, (b) evidence that
supports the existence of the problem, (c) a clear description of the setting, and (d)
probable causes related to the problem.
Background and justification.
Provide evidence from current literature showing that the problem exists and why
the topic is important and relevant.
Research Method
Provide some background to the research method and why it is a good strategy for
your research.
Relevance to the Discipline
Why is the area/topic relevant to the teaching & learning of English in secondary
schools?
Audience. Discuss who is affected and who benefits from the research.
Definition of Terms
Term or variable. Provide the complete scientific definition and appropriate
reference (if necessary).
4
Purpose of the Study
The purpose statement should provide a general statement regarding the overall
purpose of the study. Key points to keep in mind when preparing a purpose statement are
as follows:
1. Create a sentence that begins with “The purpose of this study is . . .”
2. Clearly identify and explain the central concepts or ideas of the study.
3. Identify the central area/topic to be explored.
4. Indicate the participants and research site.
5
Chapter 2: Literature Review
(4- 5 pages, * include sub- topics for the literature review)
Introduction
(One paragraph to introduce Chapter 2)
Rationale
The literature review should contain the following elements: (a) a discussion of
the theoretical or conceptual framework within which the study will be grounded; and (b)
a synthesis of the findings in summary in regard to the problem area. Use of “first
person” is expected.
Research Questions
The research questions are based on the problem or area of need and on the
research reviewed. The research questions should be stated in the form of a question.
* 2 or 3 research questions is adequate
In the context of a research paper, the literature review provides a background to the study being proposed. The background may consider one or more of the following aspects depending on the research question being posed:
Theoretical background – past, present or future Current practice Methodology and/or research methods Previous findings Rationale and/or relevance of the current study
6
Chapter 3: Methodology
(2-3 pages)
Introduction
(One paragraph to introduce Chapter 3)
Aim of the Study
This section should include a brief description of the general aim of the study.
Participants
This section should include the following elements: (a) the participants should
be defined (this should also include demographic information such as age, gender, and
ethnicity); and (b) discuss the type of sampling technique used.
Procedures
The section will be based directly on the research questions. Specifically, this is
the “how-to” section of the study and will introduce the strategy (e.g., case study) of the
research and how the data will be collected.
This section should include the following:
Indentify the specific strategy of inquiry to be used (e.g., narrative, case
study).
Provide some background information about the strategy
Discuss why it’s an appropriate strategy for your research.
Identify the form of data collection, the steps and data analysis
7
Data collection procedures. This section should include a brief description and
framework for the data recording method that will be used to answer the research
questions. This section should include a discussion about participants and the site
including
The setting
The participants
The events (what will the participants be doing)
Indicate the type or types of data to be collected (e.g., essays, interviews,
documents, audio and visual material).
Instruments. The relevant information pertaining to each instrument must be
included.
Data Analysis
Name the steps involved in conducting an analysis of qualitative data. Describe
how the data will be organized and transcribed. Discuss the coding procedures/ marking
rubrics of the transcripts or text files (if relevant).
8
Chapter 4: Results
(3-4 pages)
results presented in sequence and relative to each research question
only the results are presented without a rationale or discussion
includes relevant tables and figures
appropriate use of statistical or qualitative language to present data
9
Chapter 5: Discussion
(2-3 pages)
introductory paragraphs provide overview of the study
results are elaborated and interpreted in sequence and relative to each research
question
conclusions and summaries regarding the findings are offered
findings are linked to relevant research
implications of findings are discussed
limitations are indicated
recommendations for future research are offered
