Activating Your IdeasStainless steel for the nuclear industry

Team up with a global leader. We open new dimensions in stainless steel.

An impeccable track record, all over the world

We have an impressive track record in innovating stainless steels for the nuclear industry. This covers half a century of trusted deliveries to the world’s leading nuclear engi-neering companies and equipment manufactures, for use in both new plants and plant modernisations all over the world. From Europe and the U.S. to South America and Asia – we are a partner that you can count on.

Meeting your needs across the nuclear cycle

Core and secondary parts of most reactor types in service today such as PWR/VVER, BWR, CANDU, AGR and

fast breeder reactors are built from our stainless steel, as are reprocessing plants and research reactors. The nuclear decommissioning and waste storage industry is also a prime user of high quality stainless for different types of transport or storage canisters and boxes for low- to high-level waste. You can trust our steel to meet your needs in terms of tight chemical compositions and high cleanli-ness, as well as strength and corrosion resistance. Nuclear projects have a higher standard of product safety and reli-ability, requiring partners with strong experience. What makes Outokumpu an industry leader is uncompromised premium quality products combined with expertise and technical support.

Our roots trace back to the very beginning of stainless

The company that makes up Outokumpu has a rich tradi-tion that traces back a century to the very beginnings of stainless steel. Over the years we have gained distinct ex-pertise in diverse industries and today this expertise is be-ing put to your benefit not just in core nuclear processes, but also in secondary and auxiliary applications as diverse as seawater handling equipment, wastewater tanks or glove boxes.

Nuclear energy is a vital component of a clean energy strategy. Nuclear generation is currently avoiding over two billion tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, and more than 200 new reactors are expected to come on stream within the next decade. As a world leader in stainless steel, we contribute to safety and reliability by supplying stain-less steels of the highest quality for a wide range of engineered components in all stages of the nuclear cycle.

“We are glad to have teamed up with Outokumpu in several large projects such as Laser Megajoule and EDF’s 900 MW reracking project. Outokumpu has kept on delivering stainless steels of the highest quality, and we have kept on building products that meet our customer’s most exacting require-ments. I commend Outokumpu for the excellent technical support we have received throughout the duration of these projects.”

Taking the nuclear industry ahead. With certified quality.

At the forefront of new grade development

We take special pride in having innovated many new stainless steel grades for a host of industries, with many of these innovations also finding use in nuclear plants. For example, our lean duplex grade Outokumpu LDX 2101® is delivering significant savings in mechanical modules (see p. 11), while our superaustenitic grade Outokumpu 654 SMO® offers superior mechanical and corrosion properties in more aggressive environments such as sea-water handling systems.

Low cobalt grades for core processes

By careful scrap selection and the use of high purity nickel and other alloying elements, we are able to offer grades with restricted cobalt content in the relevant safety classes of 0.2%, 0.05% or even lower. We can also control the content of minor elements such as carbon, phosphorus, sulphur, titanium or niobium, and reach low permeability and ferrite levels.

Outokumpu and the environment

We are not just a leading international stainless steel producer, but also one of the top companies in our field when it comes to environmental performance. We have an exceptional track record in reducing the carbon footprint of our operations, and the recycled content of our stainless steel is 90% – much higher than the global industry aver-age of 60%.

Certified products, quality control and documentation

Our production plants are known for their outstanding efficiency and comply with the strictest quality, safety and environmental standards. As an example one of our testing laboratories is accredited according to ISO17025:2005. We are also well acquainted with leading trade standards and regulations such as ASME NQA-1, NCA-3800, HAF003, RCC-MR, GOST, JIS as well as specific pro-ject specifications. This ensures not only that we produce stainless steel with industry leading tolerance accuracies, but also that our grades for the nuclear industry meet the relevant industry standards with certified quality docu-mented in detail.

Outokumpu Radionox® for fuel transport and storage

The isotope B10 as part of the boron contained in stain-less steel grade 304L provides neutron absorption and thus guarantees safety against criticality. The boron content in 304L is available in a defined range between 1.00 and 2.00 %. This specialty is available as hot rolled plate in thicknesses from 2 to 20 mm.

The latest addition to Outokumpu’s extensive productrange for nuclear applications is lean duplex OutokumpuLDX 2101® plate for mechanical modules in GEN III nuclear plants incorporating Westinghouse AP 1000 design. The first deliveries have been for walls and floors of modules containing different types of equipment in Sanmen and Haiyang in China, and also for Vogtle and Summer in USA.

The modules are very large sandwich panels that haveLDX 2101® on the inner walls, painted carbon steel onthe outer walls and concrete in between. The LDX 2101®plates not only serve as outer reinforcement and radiationshield, but also provide a corrosion resistant leak barrierin the unlikely event that leaks should occur inside themodules.

Outokumpu went through rigorous audits and inspections and extended its dimension programme to make the long-est LDX 2101® plates ever produced. Ro-Ro shipment ensured successful delivery in a very tight schedule.

Modular building is a new trend in the construction ofnuclear plants and replaces traditional rebar/stick building. The distinct advantage of LDX 2101® is that it not onlyprovides corrosion resistance corresponding to standardaustenitic grades 304 or 316, but also a much higherstrength, thereby allowing a thinner material to be usedfor significant cost savings.

CASE HIGHLIGHT:

Outokumpu LDX 2101® for mechanical modules

Outokumpu Radionox®, which has been our brand name for more than 25 years, derives from the words radioactive shielding and inoxidable. This specialty stainless steel is used in areas where spent nuclear fuels need to be stored either in at-reactor pools or outside power plants in temporary storage locations. Also made from our Radionox® stainless steel are containers for special transport vessels.
