What is Puberty?

• Copy this statement into your workbook.

• Puberty is the period of time when children begin to mature biologically, psychologically, socially and cognitively. Girls start to grow into women and boys into men. The changes happen due to the release of chemicals called hormones.

Hygiene• Someone says he smells?• As boys and girls' bodies develop during puberty so too do their sweat glands. These

glands are to help control the body's temperature and result in more sweat being produced.

• HOW CAN WE REDUCE THE RISK OF SMELLING AND IMPROVE OUR HYGIENE? • LIST THESE ANSWERS IN YOUR BOOK UNDER THE HEADING ‘HYGIENE’

• Use deodorant under arms daily• Wash clothes regularly • Rotate school t-shirts • Avoid wearing clothes repetitively if not washed.• Brush teeth Morning and Night• Shower Daily with soap • Use face wash or similar to remove excess oil on skin and face• Wash hair when

Increase in Pimples

• Most young people get spots around puberty. • Eating less fatty foods (such as chips and

chocolate) and drinking lots of water can help. • Pimples during Puberty are caused by

hormones, often an overload of Testosterone in both girls and boys is to blame

• Hormone inbalance is common during Puberty

How can we help control outbursts?

• It is important to try not to pick at, or squeeze the spots as this can cause them to become infected. It may help to use a face wash, cream or lotion, designed specifically for spots. These can often be bought from chemists.

• Washing your face more often with mild unperfumed or antiseptic soap and warm water may help, but be careful not to scrub your face as this can irritate the skin.

• If you get very bad spots it might be acne. Acne is a common skin condition that mostly occurs on the face, arms, back and chest. If you think that you might have acne, you could speak to a doctor as they will be able to give you advice.

• There are also various special creams and medicine that your doctor or a referral to a dermatologist (skin doctor) may prescribe to help you with the problem.

You work for the Department of Education in the marketing department.

You have been asked to design a section for a leaflet that will be sent out to schools for teenagers.

Design one page for the leaflet that covers the topic of puberty.

What should it include?

Write a response to Kelly or RobertDear Teen WorldWhy am I different? My

friends in school are all wearing bras and most of them have started their periods. Not much has happened to me yet! I’ve only grown a bit of pubic hair and my breasts aren’t doing much. I’m nearly 13 years old and much taller than the rest of them! Help!

Kelly, age 12

Dear Teen WorldI feel so ugly. My face is covered in spots all the time, it’s sore and red. I think it is acne but why has it happened so suddenly? Will it go away?Robert, age 14
