I recently chatted with the delightful Karen Mott to learn more about The Barn at the Thomas Sappington House Complex located near the intersection of Big Bend and Watson Road, near Grant’s Trail. I grew up just a few blocks from this historical area, but had only visited the property decades ago to skate upon its small pond. As it often is, sometimes we never appreciate or understand that which makes our communities unique until we gain maturity and wisdom. On this sunny day in February, I gazed out at the lovely, aged buildings, rolling gardens, and that same tiny pond that I had known as a child, and I let the calmness of that peaceful setting wash over me.

If, like me, you have never been to The Barn, or perhaps it’s been a very long time since you last visited, then don’t let another moment pass before gathering up your best friends and settling in for a fantastic breakfast or lunch in a pastoral setting.

It is that beautiful time of year when the trees and flowers come back alive and our lives are renewed with energy. Just as the robins begin their return journey back across the land, we also realize that it is time to spread our wings and fly away to new destinations! Travel is proven to be one of the best ways to make your life healthier, happier, stronger and more fullfilled. Actual studies have proven that travel increases well-being, learning experiences,

decreased stress levels, and creates memories of a lifetime. In addition, traveling builds stronger relationships, new friendships and connects people to new ideas and cultures. Vacation and relaxation go hand in hand. When leaving home (or work) and adventuring away from “the norm”, we leave our day to day lives and responsibilities far behind. This allows our bodies to reset our biological body clock and synchronizes us with the earth around us.

Are you ready to...

• Move into your higher self?

• Let go of stress and old patterns?

• Create a new path to success?

I have more clarity, determination, energy, and courage to move forward on my path. I feel a deeper connection to God. --KM

The insights were remarkable. Beth helped me access deeply buried core issues and resolve them. Her humility and unconditional love are tangible qualities that Beth radiates with such Divine joy. --JW

I like to think of it as “Heaven” rushing into my heart with healing. After sessions, I feel deeply, deeply relaxed and centered. --LT

People ask me quite often how it is that I am able to make the strong connections to God, Christ, Angelic Realm, and Multiple Star Systems. I tell them that I connect from my heart. It is through our heart center that I make all of these divine connections. It was not always so easy at the beginning of my path. My mind was over flowing with day to day events and it felt as if there was a tornado moving rapidly through my mind. I had to learn to quiet my mind and bring my attention into my heart space/center. It was here that I was able to hear the direction of Source/God. I recently received a message from Christ. He said “Beth, tell people that they will find me within their heart

centers”. He went on to say, “we must always direct our attention to our heart centers for this is where God’s authority has been placed”. We are to open up our hearts and expand here. So many people are trying to make deeper connections to God/Source. The truth is that you are already the image of our creator and all that you need to do is still your mind and listen to the quiet voice residing within. When we were young children, we just knew the truth. We remembered that we were capable of so much and we ran and played with unleashed enthusiasm. Our hearts told us to go here and there and state what we were thinking. We heard our inner voices. This is why I love working with young children. They are freedom of expression. As years went by, some of us were told that we could not possibly achieve dreams we set for ourselves because the person or persons stating this could not possibly see this for themselves. The result is that you shut down! You shut down your infinite wisdom and your ability to hear God’s voice. You no longer trusted the inner voice speaking to you. It is time to reclaim your dreams, visions, and unlimited

possibilities. Ask yourself….”when is the last time you took action on something that really mattered to you”. Maybe you wanted to start a small business, take a trip to a holistic retreat for rejuvenation, teach a class, or take a self-mastery class. Your heart was screaming yes, yes, yes but your mind said “No”, I have too many other responsibilities and considerations. We need to STOP and take a breather. Bring your attention to your heart center, still your mind, and ask creator/God for wisdom and direction. He will speak to you here in this divine space. You will be shown direction and hear the wisdom you need for what your soul is asking of you. I heard God say “we are to open our hearts and allow for our greatest expression to come forth and we are to find our truth and speak our truth”. My own personal connection to God/Infinite wisdom is strong and I have found that every area of my life has increased. I call upon God’s wisdom each day to help me plan my day; prepare myself for my clients, and to guide me in the right directions. My discernment has increased greatly because I have learned to still my mind and listen to God’s infinite wisdom flow

in. No more crazy mouse maze for me! My clients are now residing in a higher version of themselves; they have more direction, clarity, and have moved into stronger conduits for God’s presence. I now have clear discernment which leads me in the right direction and action I need to take simply through connecting to my heart center, stilling my mind, and listening to the wisdom of God/Creator coming in. Priceless!

THE ESKIMO’S SECRET TO LONGEVITYby Linda Emmanuel

Cancer and disease are infections caused by micro-organisms, the most common being mycoplasma, a cell-wall deficient bacterium. Mycoplasmas live in an acidic pH. Minerals determine pH and the only source of alkaline minerals are in fruits and vegetables. To stay healthy, 80% of your diet should be fresh fruits and vegetables. So here’s food for thought: If 80% of a human’s diet should be fruits and vegetables, how do Eskimos stay healthy? They do not have fruit trees or gardens. Their diet consists of fish, caribou, and blubber. How do they keep from getting sick? What is their secret?

CYANOGENIC GLYCOSIDES Plants protect themselves from “bad” bacteria with nitrogen-based phytochemicals. Alkaloids are one type and another is cyanogenic glycoside (CG). CG forms cyanide which is deadly to all life. However, the cyanide cannot be

released unless a specific enzyme is present. Fortunately, mammals do not manufacture this enzyme. This enzyme is only present in the cancer cell. Therefore, if cancer cells are not present, the cyanide will not be released, and the CG will harmlessly be excreted.CG = Death to MycoplasmaWhen CG enters the cancer cell, the deadly cyanide is released and kills the pathogenic resident; because mycoplasma produces the enzyme. Isn’t Mother Nature a genius?

RUMINANTS Ruminants are cud-chewing mammals that graze on grasses containing CGs. Cattle, deer, elk, sheep, goats, yaks, antelopes, giraffes, and caribou are ruminants. When ruminants chew regurgitated grasses, this begins breaking down the outer wall of the grass releasing CGs. Predators instinctively eat the partly digested grasses in the ruminant’s rumen and/or stomach. A grizzly bear will kill a deer, eat only the grasses, and abandon the rest of the kill. Sick cats and dogs instinctively eat grass. So what is the Eskimos’ secret to longevity? Answer: Their favorite dish is the salad greens found in the caribou’s stomach.

MAN-MADE LAETRILE

Man has attempted to copy Mother Nature’s cancer defense mechanism. However, Laetrile is not cyanogenic glycoside. It does not have the same formula/structure of CG. Therefore, man-made Laetrile is poison and will form deadly cyanide.

SOURCES OF CYANOGENIC GLYCOSIDE

Apricot (kernel), peach (kernel), plum (kernel), apple (kernel), bitter almonds, butter beans, lima beans, pear (kernel), dandelion root, and

flaxseed.

ALZHEIMER’S AT 50?ONE FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE

by Michelle Schmitt

In May of 2005, my 50 year old husband, Keith, showed up at my office to tell me he just lost his job of 30 years. Keith was a very intelligent man who had the capability to fix anything. He had gone to school for electrical engineering. His accomplishment ranged from building his own home and doing all the electrical circuits, to repairing cars, appliances, basically if it needed fixing, he was your go-to man. He struggled throughout his life with dyslexia, but was able to compensate by making a good living because he was mathematically inclined. He told me the reason he lost his job was that the company he worked for had just merged with another one, and they were getting rid of long term employees that made the higher salaries. Prior to this, I had not noticed any significant changes. Keith told me he wanted to “take some time off before finding another job.” I told him that financially we could not afford him to do so. He seemed to be annoyed with this answer. He started looking for another job, and was suppose to be helping out with household chores, and picking our daughter up from school. On several occasions he “forgot” to pick her up and she would have to find a ride home with someone else. I started noticing odd things like going to the grocery store and coming back with nothing. When questioned, he would respond “I’ll just go back, don’t worry so much.” He accused me of taking his car keys and then we would find them in the freezer. When he finally was able to get another job, it lasted a very short time. Between 2005 and 2007 – he had gotten 7 jobs and lost every single one. One of the jobs was training to be an over the road tractor trailer driver. The instructor sent home on the second day and told him he wasn’t ready to take the course. I remember him pacing back and forth with papers scattered all over our dining room floor and he said to me, “I can’t, I can’t remember anything.” I could see in his face he was scared. During this time Keith was going to his family doctor who told us this was just a sign of depression. He kept increasing his antidepressant medication. This lasted for 2 years and things were progressively getting worse. I stopped by the doctor’s office on several occasions before heading to work and left messages for him that I felt something was significantly wrong with Keith. He finally had a CT brain scan ordered, but the test came back as “normal.” In the meantime he was trying to renew his driver’s license and was

having difficulty passing the test. He drove to several licensing offices and finally passed the test by 1 point. My daughter and I were noticing bizarre things happening at home. He seemed oblivious to things that needed to be done. He changed the oil in my car and forgot to latch the hood down. While driving on Illinois route 3 to work one day, the hood of my car flew up. I pulled off the road and discovered that oil was also coming out of the bottom of my car. I had come home from work one day to discover he had taken apart our refrigerator – hundreds of pieces all over the kitchen floor, but he was perplexed how to put it together. He was becoming more and more agitated. He got mad at me and jumped into his truck and threw it in reverse only to smash in the front end of my car in the driveway. He started cursing telling me I was the stupid one for leaving my car there. As time went on we noticed a change in his speech – much slower and he was having difficulty finding the words to say. He no longer could add numbers or write checks. Finally in June of 2007, I saw a program on channel 5 news about a woman diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. She was in her late 40’s, having difficulty at work, memory problems. I wrote the doctor’s name down and made an appointment immediately to have Keith seen. In June 2007, we saw Dr. James Galvin at the Memory Diagnostic Center at Washington University. I was told to bring Keith’s original CT films, and anything else that might help with his diagnosis. I had been keeping a journal with dates that I brought thinking it might be helpful. Keith was taken away for several hours of testing. Dr. Galvin took me aside into a room to looked at Keith’s CT films. He then told me that this was not a normal CT – Keith had significant atrophy in the fronto-temporal lobe of his brain. He reviewed my notes I had kept, and also reviewed Keith’s testing results. He told me that based on everything he had, he believed Keith had “Pick’s Disease.” (http://www.theaftd.org/unders tanding f td / f td - over v iew). Pick’s disease is the original term for frontotemporal degeneration characterized by a slowly progressive deterioration of behavior, personality, or language. Currently the term Pick’s disease is used for a specific pathology with Pick bodies, which are abnormal collections of the protein tau in the brain. He then told me the disease has no cure. It has similarities like that of Alzheimer’s, however, it is in a different area of the brain. Based on this diagnosis, Keith should no longer drive. I was devastated. I begged him not to take his license away and he told me that Keith would have to take a simulated driving test. Based on these results he would decide if he should still drive. He then told me that this disease generally plays out between 2 and 7 years of the diagnosis. He said that the disease generally hits younger people in their 40’s and 50’s and progresses more quickly than Alzheimer’s. Generally the disease starts years before one is diagnosed. He gave me some signs of how the disease would progress. He also stated that the only way to get a definitive diagnosis would be upon Keith’s death

– with a brain autopsy. I was told me to get my financial affairs in order, to contact the Alzheimer’s Association for support, and to come back if his behavior worsens – “Good luck Mrs. Schmitt.” I was devastated but relieved that after several years of guessing what was happening, at least we could try and move forward. When we walked back to the car Keith yelled at me and threw the car keys at me and said “Here, you drive – I’m not supposed to.” I drove home and had a thousand thoughts going through my mind but managed to call and set him up for the driving test. The driving test results came back that he did not pass and lost his ability to drive. From here on out he got around on a bicycle. I had to find an attorney who was specialized in “Elder Care” cases. After consulting with family, it was decided that we needed to move from our home in Illinois back to St. Louis to be closer to them for their help. Our daughter who was going into 8th grade would have to start a new school. Keith’s disease steadily declined. When we first moved back to St. Louis he was ok being at home alone as long as I would check on him during the day. A group of retired neighborhood men would watch over him also. They would meet daily for several hours to chit chat and kept a close eye on Keith while giving him some companionship. One day he decided to go for a bike ride but got lost and was brought home by the police. After that he did not get on his bike. He threatened to take our riding lawn mower out to drive it on the road so I had to hide the keys. I had to hire caregivers to come into the house as he declined. My daughter helped watch him sometimes but this became a problem when he got out of the house one day while I was at work. She called me in a panic and to say he had gotten out of the house half dressed, and the neighbors were trying to help get him back in the house. When this did not work, I had to call the non-emergency line for the police. Several police cars showed up and they managed to get him back in the house. By this time his disease was quickly progressing. He had hallucinations, was trying to get out of the house and we had to put special locks on the tops of the doors. He was pacing and pacing like a caged animal. Once I counted 77 times from the back door to the front door – he was so agitated and just wanted to get out – somewhere – anywhere. He couldn’t verbalize to me anything about what he was feeling. One afternoon while watching TV he started sobbing, kept shaking his head but he could not tell me what was wrong. The caregivers started to call me at work asking me if there was any other medication they could give him because he was getting really agitated. He was not able to watch TV or could not figure out how to use the remote control to change the channels. He was up and down all night long, could not find the bathroom (we have 1 bathroom). He started having seizures and falling a lot. I was still working full-time because we needed the health insurance. Both, my daughter and I, were exhausted from taking care of him through the night. On Christmas Eve 12/24/11,

I had started getting ready to take a shower when I heard him trying to get out the front door. I quickly got dressed and made the decision to drive him to the emergency room. I was hoping I could get some help – any help – maybe some different medication to calm him down. This did not turn out to be the case. The doctor decided to admit him because he thought Keith was a danger to himself. He was admitted to the Behavior Health Unit where he stayed for a week while they were trying to figure out which nursing home he needed to be placed in. Unfortunately because of his agitation, there wasn’t a lot of places that would take him. He was discharged to the first nursing home which had a locked unit. After 7 days I got a call from one of the staff that he had hit a resident, and that they had called the police to come and take him to the emergency room. He was handcuffed and driven to the emergency room by himself. I received a call from the ER doctor that they could not understand what Keith was saying, and were going to contact social services to help admit him. He was in the hospital for about a week with a test here and there, but the intentions were to discharge him to his next nursing home. Again, very little options because of his agitation diagnosis. He was discharged to nursing home #2. There he stayed for approximately 3 months until the nursing staff decided he was a flight risk. This nursing home did not have a locked unit and the social worker called me and told me I had 30 days to find another place to put him. Unfortunately there were little options available to us. In April of 2012 Keith was sent to nursing home #3 where he stayed in until his death on February 10, 2014. The disease robbed him of his ability to walk, speak, and feed himself. Sometimes he would recognize family, but as fast as a brain “light switch” was turned on – it turned off. The only thing he was able to do was walk. Sometimes he would walk himself into a corner and could not figure out how to turn around and walk the other way. He became a prisoner in his own body. Keith died on February 10, 2014 after a 9 year battle with this disease. My daughter and I miss him every day. Stress and trauma have been spread out for so many years that when you lose your loved one from such a horrific disease at a young age, your emotions run the gamut. You start questioning whether or not you did the best you could do for their care, or if – just maybe, there was another medical route you could have found. In the end the outcome would still be the same. If I could give any piece of advice it would be this. Make sure that after your loved one is diagnosed they know that you will be by their side no matter what. This disease robs a person of their mind, dignity and hope for the future. You will have to be their advocate when they cannot speak for themselves.

by Gloria MillerSPRING RENEWAL

It isn’t officially spring, but we did spring forward an hour last week. Like everyone, I sprang forward with the clock, but I realized I also needed to spring forward with my life! Spring is the perfect time to start over, if need be. For me, the beginning of spring offers me the opportunity to start again all of the things I let slide during fall and winter. The fall is full of birthdays in my family and holidays, so I’m busy with those events which often set me back in some aspects of my life, like exercise, gardening, and cleaning. It’s like fall signals hibernation and gives me a pass to shrug off everyday activities. When spring rolls around, I have to play catch up with my ‘spring cleaning’ and exercise. I can start working in my garden! Spring brings renewal and rebirth. I get excited when I see the early jonquils or crocus pushing their way up through the cold, brown winter soil. It means the season is on the verge of changing and it brings the promise of warmer temperatures. I hear the birds chirping and I see them building their nests. These signs indicate that is also

time for me to get busy. It’s so much easier, for me anyway, to exercise when the climate allows for outdoor activity. I can ride my bike, take long walks and work in the garden. It’s my own fault that I don’t do this during the winter, but honestly, it just takes more will power and dedication to go outside and walk when the temperature is only 20 Degrees. It’s a challenge to really deep clean the house with a Christmas tree and decorations in almost every room. And gardening in winter? Of course, these are excuses I give myself to avoid doing what I should be doing all year long. It’s my own fault I have to play catch up during the spring, but now? I don’ have any excuses! There are no obstacles inside my house to prevent me from doing that deep cleaning it so desperately needs. The weather is cooperating and I can get outside for a walk or ride. I even planted kale, lettuce and snow peas because I am eager to get homegrown veggies on my plate. Everything comes alive during spring! The bright and colorful spring flowers provide amazing stimuli for our senses. Nature also provides cheerful sounds like singing birds and kids playing outside. Spring is vibrant, energetic and powerful. It provides the renewal cycle to kick start whatever we desire to pursue. Start good habits this spring. Exercise, eat right, garden or whatever you choose to do, start now!

SNACKS TO PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP

Many of my clients are relieved when I tell them it is not only okay to snack, but I actually strongly encourage it! Snacking on the right foods keeps your metabolism humming, gives you energy, and prevents you from becoming ravenous between meals. However, snacking on the wrong foods, such as chips, simply adds excess calories to your diet and can actually leave you sluggish and craving more food. Try to eat a small snack of around 150-200 calories every 3-4 hours in between meals. Each snack should have fiber, protein or for best results, a little of both. Here are some simple, healthy and delicious snacks to give you extra energy to enjoy the beautiful spring weather:

• Spring Trail Mix: Mix 14 raw almonds + 5 cashews +

1/8 cup raisins + 1 teaspoon chocolate chips

• 5 Cups air popped popcorn• 1 Cup Greek yogurt with ½ cup

blueberries• 1 Larabar®

• 1 Serving nuts (try pistachios, raw almonds, walnuts etc.)

• 1 Apple and 1 TBSP peanut butter• 1 String cheese and 1 apple

• 1 Serving whole grain pita (toast in the oven at 400 degrees to add some

crunch) and 2 TBSP hummus• ½ Cup carrots and ¼ cup hummus

• 6 Whole grain crackers, such as Triscuits, with 1 slice low fat

cheese

Try to add variety to your snacks to avoid boredom and remember that snacking can make a world of difference in your energy level throughout the day!Mandy Grassi Copenhaver

Michelle Biever wrote in the December issue about the Hidden Forest of Engelmann Woods. (Please check out her article in the December 2014 issue page 7 on our website: www.activelifestylesmag.com). I finally had the opportunity to spend some time on this trail recently. My

husband, Mike, and I picked a nice day toward the end of March when it was still too early for the wild flowers and budding trees. Still winter on the trail with water flowing in the creek. The calmness and peacefulness were incredible. This is a completely natural trail, a total commune with nature except for a few trail markings on the trees. With the trees void of leaves, you could see for quite some distance and all you could hear was nature. We encountered only 3 other people on the trail the whole time we were there. It is a one mile and half loop but altogether about 2 ¼ miles from the parking lot. The trail is uneven and could be a challenge in a few spots jumping rocks in the creek avoiding water and mud. Definitely need hiking boots and

a walking stick and water after you climb up the hills toward the end of the trail! If you enjoy nature, want to get away from urban noises, and want a peaceful serene moment in the woods, this is the trail for you. I have read that this trail boasts an assortment of spring flowers. I will plan to return in a few weeks and check that out for myself! Take Highway 100 to Route T Junction. Drive towards St Albans, approximately 6 miles. After passing the Firehouse on the right, continue up a hill and the Engelmann Woods Conservation sign is on the right. Parking is limited.

Please send me your favorite hiking trail. I would love to post it! [email protected]

Get out and enjoy our beautiful nature, we are so lucky in St Louis and the surrounding areas, as we have many wonderful and unique trails to enjoy. Some are paved, others totally natural, some trails are a leisurely walk others a strenuous climb. You can search for trails in the area by keying “hiking trails –St Louis, mo” and several sites pop up. Have fun searching and enjoying nature!

Continued from cover (The Barn at Sappington)...... I just couldn’t find one that I could afford. So, one day I was praying on my way into work and I asked the Lord to please help me focus on the possibilities and not the limitations. That very afternoon my phone rang, and on the other end was the one friend that I had in St. Louis. It’s funny, because she’s from Des Peres and rarely leaves that area. But that day she had been on the trail and met up with a city employee who told her that they were looking for someone to come in and run a place that would serve breakfast and lunch. She knew that was my dream and immediately called me! Three weeks later I came out to have a look around and, of course, I fell in love with this property. The topography of this area reminds me so much of where I grew up in Virginia and so I felt at home here and when I walked into the building I just felt a really positive energy. I had six weeks to put together a business plan and proposal to submit to the City of Crestwood. So, I turned it over to the Lord and that was in 2012. I opened in March of 2013.

Anne: You mentioned that you were looking for restaurant opportunities in Hilton Head. Had you always been in this industry?

Karen: Yes, my very first job was waitressing at a Golden Coral when I was just sixteen and I fell in love with this business.

Anne: What are your hours of operation? Karen: I’m opened six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast and lunch but we also have special events in our off hours. Some of those special events are events that we put on and others are events that people hire us to do on-site catering...events like bridal showers, baby showers, small class reunions, and the like. On the first Friday of every month we host a cocktail party for our community. It’s just ten dollars to get in and there is a cash bar and the admission costs covers the food and it’s a lot of fun!

Anne: What do you most enjoy about running this restaurant? Karen: I am a life-long learner and I love big challenges that are put in front of me. This has been both a great challenge and a great learning experience. I’ve learned a lot about other people and I’ve learned much about myself. I have also learned so much about food and food safety. Anne: What do you find is your biggest challenge in running this restaurant? Karen: Staffing, because staffing is

hard.

Anne: How many hours are you logging in per week? Karen: That depends on how many special events I have. I usually put in 50-60 hours but in May I can easily put in 80 hours per week.

Anne: Where does your inspiration come from? Karen: I work on gratitude and am grateful every day because I know that this was a God given and God directed gift for me. I believe that even our logo was God sent because I just woke up with the thought of it one morning.

Anne: How do you like living in Crestwood? Karen: I like it a lot and find that the people here are very friendly. It’s taken me a bit longer to meet people because I’m working all the time but now so many of my customers have become friends.

Anne: What is your most popular luncheon offering? Karen: Our very biggest seller is our egg salad BLT. It’s so delicious! Years ago I was in a bar and I heard a man request that very thing and I knew that if I ever had my own

consists of four buildings and the grounds. The gift shop is gorgeous and has many unique items and it’s a great place to shop after a meal.

Anne: Do you cook for yourself when at home? Karen: No, and the truth is, I’m not a very good cook but I am a great recipe collector. I love to read recipes and adapt them to my needs. In fact, I love to experiment with tiny appetizers for our cocktail parties. The other day we made small brie and pepper jelly grilled sandwiches and they were absolutely delicious.

Anne: What keeps your customers coming back for more? Karen: I would say that it’s the quality of the food, the pricing, and the service, and probably in that order.

Anne: Are you planning any future events? Karen: Oh yes! I wanted to mention that starting on April 1st on Wednesday and then on every Wednesday through spring, summer and fall, we will be hosting “yappy hour.” On those days all well-behaved pets are welcome out on our beautiful patio.

Anne: It’s been a pleasure speaking

YOUR NEXT MEAL!

place that I was going to put that on the menu. We build it like a club sandwich and people just love it!

Anne: I’m drooling over your cakes on display! Karen: I have a baker who has been with me from day one and she is truly amazing. She bakes cakes, scones, pies, cobblers, and cheesecakes and she does a fabulous job.

Anne: You are such a bubbly and happy person, Karen. It’s just great to see a woman living her passion. When you turn the lights off here at night and head home what are your thoughts? Karen: I’m usually thinking about what I need to get at the grocery store at 5:30 the next morning!

Anne: You sound like such a typical woman restaurant owner! Tell me about your employees. Karen: I have a wonderful head cook and I mean, he just makes the most beautiful eggs you’ve ever seen! I’m always amazed at just how beautiful our food is. My daughter also works alongside me and I just love that!

Anne: Tell me about that wonderful, little gift shop upstairs. Karen: This entire area is aCrestwood City Park and this restaurant was built to serve the complex. The Sappington House Museum is supported by a foundation and that foundation runs the gift shop and the proceeds go to the foundation which in turn supports my business. Most of what you see here is owned by the foundation, from the silverware to the tables and chairs and more. That’s what made it affordable for me and that’s why I feel that God gave me this unique opportunity. There is also a private trust that supports the entire complex which

with you Karen and now I’ve got to get upstairs and purchase a few of those unique items that I fell in love with!

The Barn Restaurant and Gift Shop is located on the Thomas

Sappington House Complex at 1015 S. Sappington Road in

Crestwood, Missouri. The restaurant can be reached at 314-966-8387. The Barn is open

from Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. for breakfast

and lunch, and hours on Saturday and Sunday are from 6:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. The Barn is closed on

Notably, studies have shown decreased stress levels in people who travel. Reducing the amount of stress over just one week away on a trip, travelers registered lower levels of stress hormones in their saliva. Limiting our stress, our bodies no longer synchronize with the clock, but instead, with the sunrise and sunset. It is common knowledge that travel brings people together and builds new and everlasting relationships. Whether you travel alone, with family, or with friends, a vacation get away improves and creates relationships and friendships. In my 21 years of travel experience, I have taken joy and pleasure in seeing so many new relationships form and grow while

adventuring out. One of my greatest joys is introducing single travelers to new people, which ultimately become lifelong friendships. Because of this, I decided to create a more affordable pricing package for single travelers with DIRECTIONS Tours. When traveling as a single, one must pay more money in most cases (due to not spliting hotel costs). This leads to higher single supplemental costs and deters many people from traveling alone. So... I went to work with our vendors and negotiated better rates for our single guests. Now, when traveling with DIRECTIONS Tours, single guests can enjoy our great trips at the same rates of doubles or just a little more.

(see details below). Many single travelers are also leary about traveling alone. Rest assured, you are never “alone” when you are our guests!

There are so many great places to explore this Spring and Summer. DIRECTIONS Tours of St. Louis is a great place to start your vacation planning! DIRECTIONS TOURS EXPLORE SECTION, APRIL 2015 www.directionstours.com

A very popular summertime destination is Mackinac Island, Michigan. As the heat of a St. Louis summer settles in, the cooler days, sparkling lake waters, sandy beaches are a great escape! As the old saying goes, half the fun is in getting there, and this especially holds true when traveling to Mackinac Island. DIRECTION Tours offers a unique and exciting way going and coming to Mackinac. Our tour travels to the historic small city of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River and once boasted a great industry of shipbuilding. This heritage is reflected in the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, which sits along the Manitowoc River and is truly a delight to visit. It is here that the USS Cobia rests and is open for tour of both her topside and inside, including the torpedo rooms, wardroom, crew’s quarters, engine rooms and much more. The Cobia saw much action in WW 11 and was lost in May of 1945 during an eight hour depth charging by the Japanese minesweeper Hatsutaka. During that engagement, she was blasted into the muddy seafloor of the Gulf of Siam, but escaped intact, although heavily damaged. Today she is a National Historic Landmark and has been lovingly restored to her 1945 configuration. The SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry that shuttles between Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Ludington, Michigan. She is the last coal fired passenger vessel operating on the Great

Lakes and it is quite special to have the opportunity to take this sixty mile, four hour trip across Lake Michigan. The ferry saves travelers three and a half hours of travel time compared to the 411 mile drive from Manitowoc to Ludington via Chicago. There is plenty entertainment onboard the ferry including bingo, movies, gift shop and more. Traverse City is found just a short two hour drive from Ludington and is one of our favorite small towns in Michigan. Voted one of the 10 Best Small Towns in America by Fodor’s, Traverse City is a true delight anytime of the year. Here you will find breathtaking natural beauty, up market boutiques, incredible restaurants, lovely wineries, and great local microbreweries. Traverse City is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States and every year during the first week of July the city hosts the National Cherry Festival, attracting 500,000 visitors! The journey from Traverse City to Mackinaw City is a two hour drive and is visually stunning. The glistening waters, lakeside homes, and gorgeous landscape are a joy to behold. Traveling through the vacation destination of Charlevoix is a delight, as there is a drawbridge to be traversed and here there is the pleasure to be had of seeing yacht after yacht ply these beautiful waters. Mackinaw City is where we board the passenger ferry over to Mackinac Island. This is such a beautiful crossing of Lake Huron, indoor seating or

for those who love the wind in their hair, there is outdoor seating atop the ferry for the twenty minute crossing. It is always a great pleasure to approach Mackinac Island, as she is a gem to gaze upon from the waters.

Welcome to Mackinac Island! There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine 3.8 mile island. Mackinac Island served as a strategic point for the Great Lakes fur trade and later the British established Fort Mackinac on the island during the American Revolutionary War. The Fort still stands today and is open for tours which include costumed docents and battle recreations. Mackinac Island first became a popular summer resort destination for the very wealthy in the late 19th century and the entire island is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Travelers are wooed by the architecture, gardens, galleries, restaurants, history, natural beauty, and the eight mile bicycling trail that follows the island’s perimeter. Downtown streets are filled with fudge shops and tourists are known as “fudgies!” The natural beauty of the island is best experienced

by horse-drawn carriage. Narrated carriage tours are always a highlight as the horses make their way through the heavily wooded areas, past the fort, and over to a scenic lookout of a natural carved arch that overlooks the water. The

lilacs that drench the island are thick and sweetly scent the air! Mackinac Island has been the setting of two feature films: This Time for Keeps, starring Esther Williams, in 1946 and Somewhere in Time, which was filmed at the Grand Hotel (pictured above) in 1979 and starred both Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887 and was a summer retreat for vacationers who arrived by lake steamers from Chicago, Erie, Montreal, and Detroit. Our next two nights will be at the fabulous Grand Hotel! The Grand Hotel’s front porch, the longest in the world, became a principal meeting place for all of Mackinac Island in the 1890’s. Today, guests enjoy rocking on the Adirondack chairs that line the massive porch while gazing out past manicured gardens. There are 386 guest rooms, none of which are alike. Join us on this truly special experience!

financeBE AN “ENVIRONMENTAL” INVESTOR

This month, we observe the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has inspired millions of people to take action to improve the environment. But the lessons of environmentalism can also be applied to other areas of life — such as investing. Specifically, as an investor, you may well want to follow the “three R’s”: reduce, reuse and recycle. Let’s see how these environmental themes can be applied to your investment habits:

•Reduce — Many of us probably own more things than we really need. In fact, if all the other people on Earth used as much “stuff” as we do in the

United States, the planet would need to have three to five times more space just to hold and sustain everybody, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. So from an environmental standpoint, it might be smart for all of us to “streamline” our possessions. And the same could be true for our investments — it’s not always a case of “the more, the merrier.” It’s particularly important not to own too many of the same type of investments, because you could suffer a setback in a market downturn that primarily affects those assets.

•Reuse — One way of being environmentally conscious is to repair, rather than replace, durable goods such as bicycles, washers, dryers, etc. After all, “new” is not always better. Many investors are also prone to tossing out the old and bringing in the new — and not always with the best results. For example, some investors switch their overall strategy every so often in attempts to capitalize on some trend they have heard about. But you’re almost certainly better off by sticking with a long-term strategy that’s appropriate

for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Of course, within your strategy you can make adjustments as your circumstances change over time, but there’s probably no need to toss your entire approach overboard. As you invest, though, always be aware that the value of your investments will fluctuate, and there are no guarantees that you won’t lose value.

•Recycle — Aluminum cans become airplane parts, old phone books are transformed into textbooks and plastic beverage containers may end up as the carpeting on your floors. It’s truly amazing how recycling can give new life to old, unwanted products. In a way, you can also “recycle” investments that no longer meet your needs, either because your circumstances have changed or because the investments themselves have become fundamentally altered — as is the case when a company in which you invested has shifted its focus or taken its business in a new direction. Instead of just liquidating the investment and using the cash to buy, say, an ultra-high-definition television with all the bells and whistles, you

could find a new use for the proceeds in your investment portfolio. To name one possibility, you could use the money to help save for a child’s college education. Or you might use it to help fill other gaps in your portfolio.

By following the “reduce, reuse and recycle” philosophy, you can help make the world a “greener” place to live. And by applying the same principles to the way you invest, you can create a healthier environment in which to pursue your important financial goals.

NETWORKING YOUR BUSINESS CARDS

The business card is a sales tool. Here are some tips to help you get more use out of them. 1. Never leave home without them. Before leaving home, your checklist should be expanded to include your business cards. Any ‘per chance’ meeting is an opportunity to give out a business card. A morning run or a quick trip to the local store could be an opportunity to network. 2. Insert a business card when mailing bill payments. You may not think a person in South Dakota who opens your credit card bill payment can help you. Never underestimate the power of networking. 3. Use proper business card etiquette. Whenever you give a business card, ask for a business card. When given a business card, don’t just take it and place it in your pocket. Make the person feel important by looking at their card for a few seconds. Write comments on the card such as date, location and common points of interest. 4. Be generous. Give business cards out to everyone, including family and friends. Don’t let vanity stop you from giving out your last business card or giving 2 at a time to each person. I have met many people who have totally missed the purpose of a business card. I once asked a person for a second business card, so I could refer his services. His response was “I only have a few cards left and I need them”, as he looked again at his name on the card. Hoarding your business cards only makes your wallet feel full, not your bank account. 5. Ask for referrals. When giving a business card you should ask, “I would appreciate a referral, if you know anyone that could use my services”. People naturally like to do favors for

people. This places you in a good position with them and they will feel better about helping you. Give them 2 cards.

Judy’s Tips For April

silverspaceWHO WILL SPEAK FOR ME?

by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law Spring is an exciting time of renewal with its very own unique set of celebrations. A lesser known celebration is the National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) held on April 16th. The Elder & Estate Planning Law Firm, along with other national, state and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making. All adults can benefit from thinking about what their healthcare choices would be if they became unable to speak for themselves. These decisions can be written down in an advance directive so that others know the individual’s wishes. Advance directives come in two main forms: a healthcare power of attorney and a living will. A Healthcare Power of Attorney allows another trusted individual to make certain medical decisions, gain access to the person’s medical records and make provisions

for the person’s care during any period of disability. By executing a healthcare power of attorney, one can ensure that his/her care will be administered efficiently and effectively if he/she lacks capacity due to accident or illness, and any necessary decisions regarding his/her care can be made immediately without the need for a court-supervised guardianship. Unfortunately, a situation may arise in which one is unconscious, perhaps due to a serious accident, and it is determined that he/she will not regain consciousness, or that he/she would need to use artificial means to keep him/her alive. A Living Will can be used to address such situations. Under a living will, one can direct his/her physicians to terminate the use of any artificial means to prolong his/her life if there is no possibility of recovery. By executing a living will, one can keep his/her loved ones from having to make

such a difficult decision; additionally, the living will can save thousands of dollars that could be incurred in prolonged, unwanted medical care. As a participating organization in the National Healthcare Decisions Day, The Elder & Estate Planning Law Firm is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and execute written advance directives (healthcare powers of attorney and living wills) in accordance with Missouri state laws at no cost to them. These resources are available at www.stlelderlaw.com or www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org. Specifically, on April 16, from 10 AM to 12 PM, Attorney Mark Easley is welcoming the public to Creve Coeur Assisted Living with free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms. A notary and witnesses will be present to complete directives for those who wish.

Reservations are required to receive a completed Healthcare Power of Attorney, as space is limited. Please call the Concierge at Creve Coeur Assisted Living to RSVP at 314-656-7578. Information will be available for drop-ins.

Creve Coeur Assisted Living is located at 693 Decker Ln, Creve Coeur,

Missouri 63141.

I’ve come across some people who are having difficulties making their budget stretch to cover all of their expenses. Staying in a home that has no loan still has all of the expenses of utilities, insurance, upkeep/repairs, and real estate taxes. Frequently the expenses are cut back and repairs are put off—which reduces the value of your home. Here is an alternative that will allow you to retain your independence—and save some money! Some of the people I’ve met are unaware of apartments for seniors which are subsidized through HUD. These apartments offer independent living at a more affordable price. If the low income seniors sell their home and live in the apartment, the rent is based on the amount of income coming each month—not based on assets in the bank. If your monthly income is, for

example, $1,000 each month, your rent would be roughly 30% or $300. This amount includes all utilities, usually, except your phone and cable bills. Many of these apartment buildings allow pets, usually with an additional monthly fee or pet deposit. Some of the buildings include safety features specifically for seniors—like railings in bathrooms. Many of the locations offer transportation services to local shopping, so you don’t need to maintain the expense of a car and car insurance. Your monthly income is calculated using gross income amounts from ALL sources of income, with certain expenses (like medical expenses) allowed to be deducted. This certification process is redone annually so keep records of all qualified expenses throughout each year. There are several of these apartment

buildings throughout the area, and usually they have a waiting list. You will want to scout out the apartment you prefer NOW, so that your name will be at the top of the list when the time is right to move. As always, if you have any questions, give me a call at 314-650-2714. I look forward to hearing from you!

LEGACY SHARING: REVIVING THE LOST ARTby Mike Stith

How many of your family stories are remembered or recorded? At the Legacy Sharing Workshops, participants are acknowledging how meaningful it is to walk down memory lane. “There are already so many of my family stories that are gone and cannot be recreated,” laments one workshop participant. Another remarked, “Storytelling is a lost art that is worth reviving!”There is a growing enthusiasm for the new Legacy Sharing Program, developed by OneLegacy, founded by Mike Stith, Chief Story Publisher. “Stories connect us and remind us of the pivotal moments and lessons in our lives,” says Mike, whose inspiration was his mother’s memory-sharing during her hospital stay prior to hospice care. As his mother was answering his questions about topics like her

favorite pets, family, etc., he noticed how she relaxed and brightened. He realized he was learning more about her personal legacy than ever before. The Legacy Sharing Program creates a safe and enjoyable environment for participants to communicate and share personal memories and real stories. Each workshop begins by playing a memory-sharing game, followed by brainstorming activities, storytelling and writing. OneLegacy provides writing templates and guidelines, facilitation, and free digital publishing. Each session is different and no prerequisites or previous experience is needed. One young storyteller remarked “This is the way to open up—not just for the elderly, but anyone.” All ages are invited to attend, especially those interested in family history, genealogy or storytelling

as well as caregivers and veterans. Four-week or eight-week versions of the Legacy Sharing Program are designed specifically for care centers or community groups. Sharing and reflecting on personal memories is an enjoyable and therapeutic activity. Research shows that, in addition to being fun, these activities increase our positive emotional satisfaction, improve quality of life (including health benefits) and enhance family communication. OneLegacy believes that by sharing real stories, our community will be inspired, motivated and healed. “Telling stories is a powerful way to understand ourselves and each other,” says Mike. OneLegacy facilitates, gathers and publishes real stories written by residents/members and their families, creating an endless personal legacy that inspires readers around the world.

As an individual, you can also submit a story to be published for free! For more information on how you, your family and friends can preserve memories and create inspiration, please visit www.onelegacy.com. Mike promises a meaningful experience for every visitor to the website. He invites you to sign up for the free newsletter and view the latest in amazing real stories from around the world.

VOYCE is recruiting more volunteers. Join the Team! We are making a difference in the lives of thousands of residents. Every week Ombudsman drive to a nursing home to spend 4 hours a week with residents. To many residents, our volunteers are just like family. Some of the residents may not even know that their official title is “Ombudsman,” but what is important is that they know how much they care about them and that they are there to help. As a volunteer Ombudsman, your job is to ensure that the residents enjoy the best quality of life possible. You would talk to them about their legal rights, listen to their concerns and go room to room to meet with 20-25 residents each week. You would encourage

them to speak up for themselves and when necessary, meet with the facility coordinator to encourage a solution. Life following a tornado is very difficult but it can be compounded drastically if your vital records are lost. At this time of year we hear a lot about tornado safety and preparedness. So by now I am sure you know where to take cover and what emergency supplies to have on hand. Today I would like to focus on coping with the aftermath and helping you prepare for your recovery. What if the tornado did hit your home, would you have the necessary paperwork to begin the recovery process? If you have not already done so, take a few hours to organize your important documents. Even if you never experience a tornado or other disaster in your home, the peace of mind gained from knowing that your documents are safe and available, can be priceless. First you will need to decide where you are going to keep your vital documents so they will be readily available for you. A couple options for this safe keeping would first be a safe deposit box at your local bank, this provides a high level of security. But it can also be problematic if you keep things in the box that you might need immediately after a disaster because the bank may be inaccessible. So for that reason a second option is, a fireproof file box in a safe location along with your emergency ready supplies. You might even want to keep irreplaceable keepsakes, photographs or digital hard drives in this box. Whichever location you choose make sure that someone else that is not living with

you has access to and knowledge of where these items are kept. Remember you might have to leave in a hurry! So make sure to have some of your documents copied and placed in a ready bag along with your other short term emergency supplies, (flashlight, whistle, medication, multi use tool, energy bars, bottled water, first aid supplies, extra set of car and house keys, plus a little cash as well) if you should need to evacuate immediately. Recommended documents to have in your ready bag are:

Drivers’ licenses.Social Security cards.

Passports.Health insurance and

prescription cards.Doctors’ names and phone

numbers.Immunization records.

List of insurance policies (life, health, disability, long-term care,

auto, homeowners, renters), including the type, company, policy

number, and name of insured. Pets’ recent prescription and

vaccination records.Personal address book.

Always have a little cash as well.

Disasters happen. This is a fact of life. However, you can lessen the impact they have on you and your family with just a few hours of preparation.

metroABSOLUTE MAYHEM ISN’T

WHAT YOU THINK: New Children’s Book by

Local Author Teaches Kids about Balance

Finding balance seems to be an elusive goal for many adults, let alone for children who are learning that responsibilities sometimes take precedence over fun. Childhood should be dominated by imagination and play, but kids also need to realize there is a place for rules and order. Local St. Louis author and illustrator, Kelly Suellentrop, has taken this idea of balance and worked it into a charming and playful children’s book called Absolute Mayhem. “I wanted to celebrate the unbridled fantasy of childhood while throwing in gentle reminders that chores and rules are an important part of life’s equation,” Suellentrop says. “But I don’t hit the kids over the head with this preachy moral. It’s very subtle. Still, they come away from the story with the intended message, even though nowhere are they directly told too much fun is bad, and you need to have rules to balance everything out.” Absolute Mayhem follows the escapades of siblings, Lulu and Milo.

They are good kids, who go to school, do their chores, and follow the rules during the week. But when “Absolute Mayhem” comes to play on the weekend, they are transported into a world of wonder. Lulu and Milo seem to be having a grand time, until the Mayhem takes control. Suddenly, “Absolute Mayhem” doesn’t quite equal fun any longer. Suellentrop, who grew up in Kirkwood, has been touring local schools since the book’s release this past December. Teachers and students alike have become taken with the characters and the lesson. “As an elementary teacher and mom, I am excited to share this book with my students and children,” says Kristin Mayo, Kindergarten teacher in the Parkway school district. “Not only is this a great book to just enjoy, but it is also a great book to teach with. A definite must have!” The Book House, a local bookstore in Maplewood, will be hosting story time for Absolute Mayhem on Saturday, April 11th at 1:00 pm. Suellentrop will read the book, answer questions, and do some on-the-spot drawings with the audience.

Absolute Mayhem is available locally at The Novel Neighbor in Webster Groves, STL Books in Kirkwood, and Afterwords Books in Edwardsville, IL as well as on Amazon and at KellySuellentrop.com, where schools can also request an author visit. In addition, Suellentrop writes a WordPress Recommended Family Blog called AreYouFinishedYet.com and has received national exposure on the Huffington Post, Scary Mommy, and BlogHer.

establishing a reputation for finding the un-findable, persuading the reluctant, and maintaining unique relationships long after the end credits rolled. In The Company of Legends, the curtain is pulled back and the magic is revealed to show what it took (adventures, misadventures, headaches and thrills) for Joan and David to get their films made. The stories of their productions and the personalities involved are often amusing, sometimes moving, quite revealing, and best of all, never been told before. The best of the book is that we get to meet these legends at home away from the set where they are the most venerable. Here is Sinatra talking about watching Spencer Tracy on the set so he learn from the master, President Reagan reminiscing about his long time friend Jimmy, Ginger Rogers disputing rumors of any on-set fights with Fred Astaire and Katharine Hepburn talking candidly about Spencer Tracy for the first time.

For the book availability…In The Company of Legends ($24.95) is available at all major book stores along with all the leading online retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Nobles. In The Company of Legends is also available as an ebook.

All Paws Rescue, Inc. is an all volunteer non-profit animal rescue organization based in St. Charles County, Missouri. Our mission is to rescue homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats, provide any necessary medical care or behavioral help they need, and then place them into loving permanent homes. All Paws is made up entirely of foster homes, which allows us to better evaluate each animal and place them in homes that are well-suited to their needs and the needs of their future owners. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) or FIV/FeLV tested (cats), and microchipped before being placed for adoption. In addition to our adoption program, All Paws also offers multiple services to our community, including low-cost spay/neuter services and placement assistance for owners needing to re-home their pets. website www.allpawsrescue.info
