Co-curricular Activities

Activities Information 2017 1

Introduction

Scots College offers a wide range of school activities for boys’ participation. The school encourages involvement in sporting and cultural activities as Scots recognises both as being important parts of a young person’s education and development. The aim of this booklet is to give information so that parents and boys can gain some idea of what is involved in each activity, the possible costs involved and the likely time commitment.

It is generally expected that a boy will play one summer sport and one winter sport for the school.

It is anticipated that a boy will participate for the school and not a club side if the activity is offered by the school, though exceptions may be considered.

In choosing to participate in any activity it is important that a boy considers carefully his time availability. He should not over-commit himself to the detriment of his academic work. It is also important that once a commitment is made to an activity, that that commitment is seen through to the end of the year/season. This is especially important for College Sport Wellington summer competitions, which run in Term 1 and continue in Term 4.

Occasionally clashes may arise between activities. For this reason it might be helpful to consider the ‘major’ sports at Scots as Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey and Rugby. It is unusual for a boy to play more than one of these during a season. Further, if a boy participates in one of these, it is regarded as his primary sport and it would take priority in any

possible clash, practices and/or matches.

SPORTS UNIFORMScots College is a uniform school and any student representing the school is expected to be dressed in the appropriate sports uniform and to be wearing that uniform with pride. The College Shop (Manager: Mrs. Debra Short Phone: 04 380 8536) stocks all items of sports uniform.

As a general guide the following are the uniform expectations of some of the ‘major’ sports:

Athletics College singlet (white) & black shots

Basketball College basketball singlet (supplied) & black shorts

Cricket White longs, white shirt & white floppy or College hat

FAIRPLAYScots College is a signatory to SPARC FairPlay and endorses completely that, in playing sport at Scots College, students will:• enjoy themselves• play within the rules• respect the referees and umpires• respect the opposition and their supporters• be gracious winners and dignified losers• play hard but fair

COACHES & MANAGERSMost teams at Scots College are coached by members of the teaching staff. In a situation where an outside coach is used, as far as is practicable a staff member is attached to a team as Manager, to act as liaison between the coach and the school.

We welcome any parental assistance and a parent should feel free to contact the AP Co-curricular if they feel they would like to offer their services.

Briefly, the role of a coach/manager is:• to be responsible for team selection.• to organise pratices and matches as appropriate.• to ensure that the tenets behind the Fairplay Sports Charter are adhered to by all

participants (not just players)• to ensure that participation by members of his/her squad is equitable• to ensure weekly results reach the Director of Sport

COSTSMost activities offered by the school have inbuilt costs associated with them. In order to defray some of those costs, fees are charged against most sports. The fees are charged through a boy’s account but parents should feel free to query any such charge.

In 2017 a “sign up” fee will be charged. A boy is liable for that fee if he then chooses to withdraw from the activity without a reasonable excuse.

Fees vary from activity to activity and are set each year according to the projected costs of the activity. These may include any of, for example :• subscriptions to national & local sports organisations• subscriptions to College Sport Wellington• hiring of public facilities (eg National Hockey Stadium, Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre)• gear purchasing and repair• cost of hired transport on a weekly basis (minibuses, shuttle vans etc.)

The figures given in this booklet should be regarded as a guide only.

Costs incurred for inter-school fixtures (transport etc.) or attendance at a tournament are fully cost recoverable and boys will be charged separately on those occasions.

REGISTRATIONSAll registrations will be done on-line. More details about the process will be sent out by email.

Code of ConductAll members of sports teams of Scots College must:• Cooperate with teammates, coaches, officials and opponents and treat all of them with

respect.

• Strive for excellence, have fun, and develop skills.

• Know the rules of the game, and play by both the letter and the spirit of the rules.

• Realise that officials are there to interpret the rules and accept their decisions with dignity.

• Never behave in such a manner that would reflect badly on, or disgrace the team and/or the College.

• Never use coarse language or insult opponents, coaches or spectators.

• Be in attendance at required times – attendance is essential unless a prior arrangement has been made with the coach.

• Always participate according to the values of good sportsmanship.

• Always wear the correct College, practice and playing uniform.

• Show modesty in victory and grace in defeat.

• The key to a successful team is communication; if you are unable to attend a training or game you must let your coach know with sufficient notice.

Consequences for getting the above wrong:• Warning One: Formal verbal warning to boy.

• Warning Two: Phone home to caregiver.

• Final Step: Student will be stood down from team game. The student must still attend the fixture to help out where possible and support his team.

• If the Student continues to get the above code of conduct wrong after the final step they will be removed from the team.

Code of ConductFor Parents and Supporters of the CollegeAll supporters of Scots College teams should consider the following:• Sport is about having a positive attitude. You can assist in setting a positive tone and help to

make sport an enjoyable experience.

• Encourage your son, and other boys in his team, in their efforts in the sporting arena.

• Insist that your son plays within the rules of the game and by the principles of Fairplay, irrespective of the manner in which opposition may play the game.

• Being part of a team is a commitment; assist your son to live up to his commitments. Do not accept your son letting his team mates and coaches down.

• Ensure your son attends all practices and is well turned out with the correct playing uniform for games.

• Watch your son play whenever possible. Make an effort to understand the game and its rules.

• Display self-control on the sideline. Do not shout at or ridicule any players on either team.

• Remember your son is playing sport for his reasons not yours.

• Respect your son’s efforts regardless of whether he wins, draws or loses.

• Show respect for the coach and management of your son’s team. They have a difficult job and do not need interference or negative comments from observers.

• Show appreciation for the people who make it possible for your son to play sport. They are invariably volunteers and are involved because they enjoy the game.
