1896 - Bud Flanagan
Bud Flanagan was one half of the comedy and singing duo ‘Flanagan and Allen’. Bud grew up in a poor family in London and travelled to America to work on the stage. He returned to join the army in World War One and met Chesney Allen in Belgium. In 1932 the duo joined with others at the London Palladium to form the Crazy Gang. Allen was the straight man, with a neat, well-tailored image complete with trilby, while comedian Flanagan wore a large mangy fur coat and a battered straw hat. They were a favourite of the royal family, especially King George VI. Flanagan and Allen went on to record “Underneath the Arches” (1937), “We’re Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line” (1939) and “Run, Rabbit, Run” (1939), becoming household names in the 1940s. Bud’s final recording was “Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler?” for “Dad’s Army”.
