Activity 63D: Show Me the Genes!!February 27 , 2014
Getting Started: Where do you think genes are located? What scientific advancements allowed scientists to discover the answer?
Introduction: Read pg.D-41 Prove or disprove the following statement, “I know genes are located in cells because I saw it with a light microscope.”
Show Me the Genes!!Even before he began his experiments on pea plants in the 1860’sm Mendel knew that the genes had to be in the male and female sex cells – the sperm (or pollen) and the egg. However, no one knew where in the cell the genes were located until fifty years later…What role do chromosomes play in the inheritance of genes?
63D
Challenge: Rewrite the challenge question in your own words.
Key Words: chromosome, cell division, DNA
Procedure: This is a Stopping to Think activity D-41.
Results: Stopping to Think 1Stopping to Think 2Stopping to Think 3Stopping to Think 4
Analysis: Flow diagram
Reflection: Why are there two copies of each chromosome in our body cells? (not sex cells)
How’d they figure it out?
• 100 years ago scientists realized that sperm contains very little cytoplasm – the only common feature of both egg and sperm was the nucleus. Therefore, the nucleus seemed a likely candidate for the location of the hereditary material.
