It’s a sea lion’s lifeAustralian sea lions can live for 20 years or more. They can grow up to 2.5 m long and the males can weigh up to 400 kg. Adult Australian sea lions usually spend three days at sea hunting and feeding. They then return to the shore for three days of relaxing and renewing their energy, before they go out to hunt again. If you see any sleeping sea lions it is good to keep quiet and not wake them up. Their resting time is very important to their survival.

Bird watchingSilver gulls help to keep the beach clean by eating leftovers found in sea lion poo! You can easily spot a silver gull by their white feathers, grey tipped wings and bright orange legs.

White-bellied sea-eagles can sometimes be seen soaring above the dunes, beaches and bays. They hunt for fish, nesting birds and small reptiles. They have white heads and large dark grey wings.

Both the male and female make a honking sound and the male is often higher pitched than the female.

Hooded Plovers are a much smaller bird that scurry and bob along the beach. At high tide they peck at the wet sand and feed on insects in the wet sand. They are sandy brown with a black head, a white neck and red rings around each eye.

Q: What would birds be called if they had no feathers?

A: Brrrrr-ds!

The beaches here are an ideal home for the third largest colony of Australian sea lions in the world. They love their sandy home so much they never need to go on holidays or venture too far away. The greatest distance a sea lion from Seal Bay will travel is just 250 km from where they were born.

The rocky coves of Seal Bay provide shelter for the female sea lions to keep their pup safe after they are born. She takes her pup foraging at six to nine months of age and teaches them how to catch their prey. They enjoy a wonderful diet of whiting, salmon, octopus, cuttlefish and squid.

Thanks! How to help sea lionsThe one thousand Australian sea lions who live here are very glad you dropped past to say hello. They enjoy a wonderful life but sadly their numbers are decreasing. Many years ago Australian sea lions were hunted for their oil and leather and today they continue to be harmed by rubbish that collects on the beach and in the ocean.

By visiting Seal Bay Conservation Park you have already done a lot to help Australian sea lions. National Parks South Australia use your entry fee to keep the sea lion habitat clean, healthy and safe. You can help more by reducing the amount of rubbish you make and by being careful with throwing it out correctly or recycling.

15

Be an ambassadorBy being a Australian sea lion Ambassador, you will continue to help the colony long after your visit. Write your name on the certificate on the back of this booklet and hang it on your wall with pride.

Tell your friends and family that you care about Australian sea lions and that you have helped to give them a long and happy future.
