Fun Facts

Welcome to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba!

Hello! I am the Manitoba Mace! I am a very important symbol in

parliamentary tradition. I have to be in the Legislative Assembly in order

for the MLAs to be able to meet!

I have 4 floral emblems: the English rose, the French fleur-de-lis, the

Scottish thistle and the Irish shamrock. These 4 emblems represent Manitoba’s

principal founding ethnic groups. On the top of my crown

are 4 beavers which represent Manitoba’s acknowledgment

of Canada’s sovereignty.

I am going to be your guide and help you to understand what happens in our great Legislative Building!

Are you ready, are you set, let’s learn!

the bottom of the Grand Staircase are life-size and each weigh in at 2 and a half tons or 5,000 pounds.

Fun Facts

There are different levels of government that look after our cities and towns (Municipal Government), our province (Provincial Government) and our country (Federal Government). A Mayor or Reeve is the head of a Municipal Government, the Premier is the head of the Provincial Government and the Prime Minister is the head of the Federal Government. Each level of government has its own responsibilities. For example, the Municipal Government is responsible for the Fire Department because that department looks after the town or city in which we live. The Provincial Government is responsible for what we learn in school, in other words, our education. The Federal Government is responsible for all items that affect Canada, for example, the Military or passports.

Each of the pictures below is the responsibility of a level of government. Mark an ‘’M” on those photos that you think are the responsibility of the Municipal Government Mark a ‘’P” on those photos that you think are the responsibility of the Provincial Government and an ‘F” on those photos that you think are the responsibility of the Federal Government. Discuss this with your fellow students!

A province’s Coat of Arms is very unique. Our Coat of Arms displays symbols that are important to Manitoba and to its history.

The original coat of arms of Manitoba was granted to Manitoba by a Royal Warrant of King Edward VII on May 10, 1905. On October 23, 1992, Manitoba’s Coat of Arms was augmented by a Vice-Regal warrant from Ramon Hnatyshyn, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time.

Now, let’s look at our coat of arms and see what symbols we have: there is a beaver, a unicorn, a horse, St. George’s Cross, a bison, a wheat field, white spruce trees and crocuses. On the bottom the words that are written mean ‘’glorious and free” which are words taken from our Canadian National Anthem. So, as you can see, a coat of arms tells a story about the province that we live in.

This is Manitoba’s Coat of Arms
