Materials needed: variety of round objects, string,yarn, or measuring tape, scissors, paper, markers or other writing utensil Tell your child you are going to play a measuring game. Use the yarn or string to measure around your head and then their head with a different piece of yarn or string. Hold the two lengths next to each other and talk about which one is longer. The longer one means it is bigger around. Measure other objects in the house using yarn or string. Discuss which items are bigger or smaller due to the length of the yarn or string. Dance Party Turn on your favorite music and DANCE!!!

Making a Book

Materials needed: paper, markers, crayons, or other writing utensil Have a family member demonstrate how to fold paper to create a book. Discuss with the child to remember favorite memories of the year Pre-K. For example: Draw your favorite center, your friends, visitor, field trip, class experiment/cooking, etc)

Topic: Going to Kindergarten Talk with your child about going to kindergarten. Sample Questions: -How do you feel about going to kindergarten? -What will you miss about pre-k? -What are you looking forward to in kindergarten?

Choice #1- Listen to your teacher read a book over the phone. Choice #2- Watch Youtube Read Aloud Sam Helps Recycle-

Possible Questions: -What are some items that Maya’s family recycled? -What are some items that your family recycles? Choice #3- “I am a Storyteller” Use these items to create your own story with your child

Counting 1-Have your child draw a picture or sound out and write the name of each item below. Bags, Cans, Boxes, Bottles, Trash Cans, Fans, Windows, Forks, Spoons, Chairs, Shoes 2-Send them on a hunt around the house to count each one and write the number found beside the word or picture. 3-Share this with your teacher!

Shape Hunt Take a walk outside and see how many circles and squares you can find in your neighborhood.

Making a Book

Materials needed: paper, markers, crayons, or other writing utensil Have a family member demonstrate how to fold paper to create a book. Topic: Going to Kindergarten Sample Questions: -Tell your child that the school year is almost over and we’ll be saying goodbye to our pre-k class soon. You may feel sad about this. If you feel sad, what can you do to feel better? -Do you remember a special or happy time from Pre-K?

Beginning Sounds Have your child write each letter of the alphabet on a small piece of paper. As they write, identify with your child the sound the letter makes. Now, go on a hunt around your house to find something that starts with each letter sound.

Sorting and Classifying

Materials needed: a collection of items such as clothes, toys, silverware, other items around the home that can be categorized (have similarities and differences)

Show child a collection of items such as socks. Ask, “How are these things alike? How are they different?” Show child how they could be sorted, for example, put all of the black socks together. Ask child if there are other ways the items could be sorted (colors, designs, etc.)

Arte Y Mas: During the time of the day is when we have Arte y Mas. Ask your child some of the words in Spanish they have learned.

Rhyming & Writing Read this Poem:

The Litter Monster I’m a careless fellow

and this is what I do. I make a mess and won’t clean up, I

leave that up to you. I throw my garbage in the street. I will not keep my classroom

neat. I drop my wrappers on the floor. I pitch my

tissues out the door. But I’m so very sad, you see, because no

one will play with me. They call me “Litter Monster” how can

that be? Oh, please, my friend, won’t you

help me? Can you find rhyming words in this poem? (Rhyming words sound the same at the end of the word.) Now work together to create a list or draw a picture of what Litter Monster needs to know about keeping the Earth Clean.

Day 5 Fri. 6/5

Discuss with the family members in your house. Are monsters real or pretend?

Letter/Number Walk Take a walk with a family member and look for the letters of your name & numbers in your phone number on street signs, yard signs, car tags, etc.

Story Problems

Items Needed: A collection of things such as, pennies, toothpicks or dried beans.

Invite the children to explore the collection of small objects. Say: we have 10 pennies in

Arte Y Mas: During the time of the day is when we have Arte y Mas. Ask your child some of the words in Spanish they have learned.

Letters & Letter Sounds

Grab newspapers, magazines, sales flyers, junk mail, etc.

a pile. Let’s move five of the items over here. Now we have 2 piles of pennies. Can you count how many are in each pile?

Present various story problems such as: Let’s pretend that we are giving these pennies to our friends. If we see six friends, but only have four pennies. How many more pennies do we need?

Think of other stories that children may enjoy using 10 items!

Possible Questions: Who was in the story? Why were the children nervous about opening the door? What happened at the end? Choice #3- “I am a Storyteller” Use these items to create your own story with your child

Decide which letters your child will look for, write each letter on a separate paper, and then circle that letter each time you see it.
