® Día! Family Book Club Lesson Plan 7 ; Ages 4-8 Activity Description/Information Introduction Welcome children and families to the library and to the book club. Have families introduce themselves by stating their name and the school the children attend. Begin by introducing the book’s title, author and illustrator. Go around the circle and ask participants if they would like to read the story aloud. Respect children’s or parents’ decision to op out of this activity if they so choose. Discussion Questions 1. What is a ‘tall’ tale? 2. How does the author use exaggeration in the story? 3. How does the illustrator use his imagination to exaggerate the story? 4. What one word would you use to describe Doña Flor? 5. Does Doña Flor’s character remind you of someone you know? Family Activity Have family members articulate and list all the ways that Doña Flor helps her community. How can one be a community helper like Doña Flor in one’s own community? Articulate and list those activities. Small Group Activity Set up a Creation Station where pencils, markers, and other craft supplies are available. Have children create small, miniature books that they can use for pretend reading aloud. Have children draw stars, pumas, tortillas that they can cut, illustrate and decorate. Full Group Activity Using some of the props made in the creation station, have family members act out the story (if at all possible, provide a cloth that can be used for a rebozo for Doña Flor). Book Information Doña Flor: A Tall Tale About a Giant Woman with a Great Big Heart by Pat Mora, illustrated by Raul Colón Pre-Club Activities Promote the book club by prominently displaying the featured book at the circulation desk.
