Seminars In order to make Optics and Photonics more popular, to make science more interesting and to answer actual questions that arise for students, we are organizing seminars, which are conducted by popular lecturers from
scientific and industrial centers of Armenia and other countries. As always the topics of seminars included various fields of science, optics, astrophysics and even psychology, and this seminar was aimed to help students to overcome the worries about exams. Some seminars were unique and were met very enthusiastic and attracted participants of various specialties. Prof. Angela Guzman (The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL., USA)- OSA traveling lecturer, kindly invited by BMTSU OSA Student chapter

Lab Tours
e have organized lab tours for students form faculty of Physics of YSU, to several scientific and industrial laboratories. The program was aimed to give an opportunity to students to learn more about experiment culture and technique. These events are motivating and inspiring
students to improve their knowledge on optics. This year students visited laboratories in Institute of Physical research of NAS and LATES LTD. During these tours they have visited laboratories of Photonic Crystals, where diffraction grating writing technology was demonstrated, in other laboratory the visible wavelength thickness cell filled with Rb gas was demonstrated.

International Student Workshop on Laser Applications 2011 May 31 – June 4, 2011, Bran, Romania
Organized by Institute for Atomic Physics SPIE Chapter, Romania. This event was dedicated to 10-th anniversary of SPIE IAP Student chapter. Our chapter was one of co-organizing chapters of this scientific event.
Annual International Conference on Laser Physics October 11 - 14, 2011
Institute for Physical Research of NAS of Armenia Ashtarak, Armenia
Almost all our SPIE chapter students took an active part in this
conference. During the conference The Best Student contributions were
awarded with a prize that was founded by SPIE YSU and NAS Student Chapter. The prize was awarded during a special session of a conference by an International Jury of Scientists.

Outreach Olympics The First time our chapter participated in Outreach Olympics in San Diego, during Leadership Workshop. Some optical experiments were demonstrated, which included phenomena from various fields of Optics. Photo Rule – A method of length measurement with use of photo camera, Stereoscopic Vision- a simple experiment, which was demonstrating the
parallax of vision, Laser Trap – simple demonstration of diffraction of the light.
YSU and NAS SPIE Chapter school
The program included Lectures: Lab Tour: Experiment: 1. Basics of Laser Metal Cutting and engraving lasers Laser Resonator adjustment 2. Laser development history 3. Laser Applications 4. Laser irradiation control
Another interesting initiative of our chapter is Annual school on optics. This year hopefully we gave a start to a good tradition, which will help students and schoolchildren in better understanding of Optics and Photonics. First event is devoted to Lasers. In collaboration with Student Scientific Society of Faculty of Physics of YSU we had several short lectures on Laser development history, basics and applications and also our professors shared their experimental experience on working with lasers, and participants were able to take part in Laser resonator adjustment, in optics lab.

The press about Chapter activity
This year our chapter activity besides our webpage was widely promoted by various newsletters and web pages. Hereby are presented the references of these publications. The articles were mostly on Armenian, but some of them were translated on English. The Big World of Physics
his is our traditional activity which includes work with schoolchildren, to make Optics more interesting and popular. Traditionally we were taking
them to excursions to various University laboratories, but this year we decided to visit children in their schools.
Visit to Gavar orphanage
In collaboration with Student Scientific Society of YSU we visited school aged children
in orphanage of Gavar city. During visit we demonstrated several experiments of optics and
explained the occurring phenomena. Children were actively involved in experiments and were
feeling like real inventors. Then we organized a small guitar concert and gave some presents
to children. As said the director of Orphanage, this was unique event for children, because
the visitors before organized concert, gave some presents, but never shared knowledge.

Our Website nother achievement of our chapter this year was the popularization of our official website: www.spie.am . During the period of January 2010 and January 2011 more than 5000 views from 104 countries were registered. It contains information about our chapter upcoming activity, chapter newsletter and our projects archive. Also we are
posting there the information about upcoming scientific meetings and schools that are organized by other SPIE chapters and various scientific centers. Also students can find there useful links and other information.
