Dear Readers,

The Annual All-Day program at City of Hope last month

was a great success! We had an excellent turnout and the

feedback received so far has been extremely encouraging.

We want to thank our Administrator, Shirley Jacke, for

doing an outstanding job in organizing this event.

Congratulations, Shirley, on a job well done! We would

also like to thank our guest speakers, Robert Kurman, MD

of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and Elvio Silva,

MD of Cedars-Sinai and MD Anderson. Their lectures

were engaging, enlightening, and informative and provided

their unique perspectives and approaches to ovarian tumors

and other female genital tract tumors.

At this time, we would also like to remind you to renew

your annual membership, if you have not already done so.

The financial support of our membership allows us, among

other things, to sponsor guest speakers such as these.

Payments can be made on-line at www.LASOP.org or you

may contact Shirley Jacke, Administrator, via email at

[email protected] for further assistance.

Join us on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in welcoming to the

society Dr. Charles Lassman of UCLA. Dr. Lassman is a

world-renowned expert in liver and renal pathology and an

excellent, entertaining, and informative speaker. He will

discuss “Problem Liver Cases.” This is certain to be a very

educational session for both general surgical pathologists

and those pathologists specializing in GI/liver pathology.

As usual, we hope to see you among our audience members!

To submit a case, please follow the format and instructions outlined below: Create two PowerPoint presentations (PPT) and convert each of them to PDF before submitting them to [email protected]. Be sure to include in the body of your email all of your contact information. #1: The first PPT would be a "virtual slide" file that LASOP members would review before the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case (Note: Do NOT include the final diagnosis).

#2: The second PPT would be a "handout" that would be posted to the LASOP website directly after the

meeting. This PDF presentation should include:

* Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case PLUS the final diagnosis, discussion of any differentials and all references. Additional guidelines:

● It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that the identity of a patient is not apparent from the information contained in a case report. ● Use conventional units of measurement throughout the manuscript, with conversion factors for Systeme

International (SI) units expressed once in parentheses after the first mention of the conventional unit.

Example: "The blood glucose concentration of 126 mg/dL (to convert to millimoles per liter, multiply by

0.0555) was used as a criterion for diagnosing diabetes." If several laboratory values are listed, conversion

factors may be listed in a paragraph at the end of the Materials and Methods or Report of a Case section. In

tables and figures, conversion factors should be presented in the footnote or legend. Hematologic values

should only be reported using conventional units.

● Use generic names of drugs, unless the specific trade name of a drug used is directly relevant to the discussion. ● Do not use abbreviations in the title or abstract, and limit their use in the text. ● When using acronyms, make certain the full name is spelled out on first use. ● Give sources (name of company and location) for all special reagents (eg, antibodies, enzymes, probes). ● In listing references, follow AMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. ● Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references.

Deadline for submissions is March 25, 2013.

If selected, you will be contacted by the meeting's organizer by April 22, 2013.

#2: The second PPT would be a "handout" that would be posted to the LASOP website directly after the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case PLUS the final diagnosis, discussion of any differentials and all references.

● Give sources (name of company and location) for all special reagents (e.g., antibodies, enzymes, probes). ● In listing references, follow AMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. ● Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references.

The deadline has been extended to Noon of April 5, 2013.

If selected, you will be contacted by the meeting's organizer by April 22, 2013.

Bharat N. Nathwani, M.D. Professor, Pathology

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Bharat N. Nathwani, M.D., who

has returned back to COH, as a Professor of Pathology. He joins City of Hope

after working at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for the past 4 years. Prior to

that, Dr. Nathwani worked at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, where he

was a tenured professor of pathology from 1984 to 2009. Dr. Nathwani first

came to City of Hope in 1975 with Dr. Henry Rappaport and he worked in the

Department of Pathology until 1984.

Dr. Nathwani earned his medical doctorate and completed an internship at the Grant Medical College

& J.J. Group of Hospitals in Mumbai. After completing 3 years of residency and passing the Indian

Boards of Pathology in 1972, he arrived for additional training in Chicago where he did a clinical

hematology fellowship at the Cook County Hospital, with an additional pathology residency at Rush

University Medical Center in Chicago, before joining City of Hope in 1975.

Dr. Nathwani is an internationally acclaimed hematopathologist, with a lifetime of experience in

lymphoid malignancies. He is one of five international experts chosen to review over 1400 cases of

lymphoma in eight countries (1995); and, as part of a large NIH study on the epidemiology of

lymphoma in the developing world, he was part of a team which reviewed 5400 cases of lymphoma in

26 countries between 1995 and 2012. He is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO)

Committee on Pathology and Genetics of Tumors of the Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues, and

has received the Most Distinguished Physician Award in 2002 from the American Association of

Physicians of Indian Origin. He was awarded for excellence in teaching at USC in 1991, 1999, 2000 and

2003. He has been invited to give lymphoma courses and workshops throughout the world.

Dr. Nathwani received two R01 grants, as a Principal Investigator, from the NCI on computer aided

diagnosis of lymph node disease, and the clinical use of these systems. He has published 163 papers

in the peer reviewed literature. He is Board certified in Anatomic Pathology.

Dr. Nathwani brings his consultation files of 20,000 cases. He will be serving as a Director of

Pathology Consultation Services, and will be involved in teaching and clinical research.

Please join me in extending a very warm City of Hope welcome home to Dr. Nathwani. We are very

fortunate to have recruited this internationally esteemed lymphoma pathologist to our team of

experts.
