Since the premier of the television show Extreme Couponing, there has been a growing interest in how to use coupons to save money. I recently attempted some mini extreme couponing trips. I learned that coupons can save you money, but the television show does not portray an accu-rate or realistic account of couponing.

To really save money by using cou-pons, one needs to keep coupons until the product goes on sale. For example if BBQ Sauce is regularly $1.59 and you have a coupon for $0.45, which would bring the regularly priced BBQ Sauce to $1.19, but if you wait until it goes on sale for $0.79 it will either be $0.34 or free if the cou-pon doubles. Matching coupons and sale

prices is fairly easy on your own but you can find matchups online which require minimal effort.

Coupons can be organized by date issued or by product type. For my coupon experiences, I chose the product type and organized my coupons in a binder because it required less work at the store. There are numerous online resources that detail how to organize coupons.

You can obtain coupons online by printing them or from coupon inserts. Al-ways obtain your coupons legally; stealing newspapers for coupon inserts is a crime. Also, never photocopy printed coupons, each coupon has a unique code and stores don’t get reimbursed for photocopy coupons.

There are a variety of rules a couponer must be aware of, these include store policies, and the rules printed on every coupon. Be respectful of store policies on coupons, it takes just a few people breaking the rules to ruin couponing for everyone.

Expired coupons should never be used, because stores only have a set time limit to redeem coupons and that time limit is based on expiration dates. Expired coupons can be sent to military overseas to be used up to 6 months past the expira-tion date.

When shopping with coupons, be respectful of other customers, complete one transaction and go to the back of the line if you are completing more than one transaction. Also be respectful of other couponers, you don’t need to clear the shelf so you can create a massive stock-pile. There is a difference between a well stocked pantry and hoarding. Chances are the item will be on sale in the near future. Lastly, don’t buy items you won’t use just because you have a coupon.

During my coupon experiences, I’ve had anywhere from 40-85% savings. Oc-casionally I’ve saved 90-100% and only paid sales tax, but those were odd pur-chases with random items. It was fairly easy to get overwhelmed with coupons. Start small at one store and build your comfort level. Coupons can be addicting, but it’s worth the time and effort to save you and your family money.

Vision Bank has been a vital part of the Ada community since 1901. Originally known as the First National Bank and Trust Company of Ada, the bank changed to Vision Bank in 2005 as it expanded its services to communities outside of Ada. Today there is a Vision Bank in Durant, Shawnee, Prague, and Meeker, in addition to the three locations in Ada.

Since its beginning, Vision Bank has been closely tied with the development of Ada. The Norris family was a pioneer in building Ada. P.A. Norris was one of the early leaders of the bank, and the Norris family was active in the bank for decades. In fact, a member of the Norris family still sits on the bank’s Board of Directors.

One of Vision Bank’s strengths continues to be its experienced and knowledgeable bankers. Chief Executive Officer Jim Hamby has been with the bank 28 years and has 33 years of banking experience. Senior Executive Vice President Wayne Case has been at Vision Bank a total of 20 years and in banking for 38 years. Chief Operating Officer LaVonda Jones has been at Vision Bank for 31 years. Chief Financial Officer Vicky Petete has 20 years at the bank.

Vision Bank’s Ada operations are led by President Steve Bagwell. He is also the

bank’s Chief Lending Officer, and a former President of Vision Bank Prague. He has been with the bank since 1998. His wife, Jeanetta Horne Bagwell, is from Ada and they have three children in the Ada school system. Senior Vice President Chad Lancaster is the Senior Loan Officer in Ada. A graduate of Latta and ECU, he has been with the bank since 2001. He is married to Shawna Lancaster and their kids are in the Ada school system.

Lending is a key part of what banks do. Lending helps businesses grow, enables families to buy or build homes, and provides funds to purchase cars and other goods. Vision Bank has 11 full time loan officers in the Ada market who remain ready to serve the bank’s clients. Teresa Burrows manages the Arlington Bank. Elizabeth Hernandez, who is also at the Arlington Bank, is fluent in Spanish and can assist all of the bank’s Hispanic customers with their loan and deposit needs.

Vision Bank also offers non-FDIC insured investment services through its Raymond James Financial Services office, where Russ Allen is the Financial Advisor. It is also one of the few banks that still offers a complete range of trust services.

Vision Bank is currently building a new

facility for its Arlington branch location. The 8,262 sq ft. facility will be located at the intersection of Arlington and Crownpoint, just east of the current location. The new building will be more than three times the size of the current building at the Arlington Center. It will allow for easier and more convenient access for customers, increased privacy in conducting transactions, and more staff to serve its customers.

“The new Arlington facility is just one example of how Vision Bank wants to be the best provider of services to our customers and communities,” according to Steve Bagwell. “We also are working on plans to remodel our downtown lobby to make it more friendly and efficient,” said Bagwell.

While Vision Bank provides all the goods and services one would expect from a bank, it also provides financial and volunteer support for many community activities and endeavors. Bank officers and staff serve in leadership roles in every major civic and community development organization in Ada. They volunteer hundreds of hours every year for charity work, in everything from support for cancer research to aiding children in need. “Our people are our strength,” says Vicki Patton, Vice President for Marketing. ■

he day you get married is supposed to be one of the happiest of your life. Unfortunately, many obstacles can stand in your way. Once that final commitment has been made, flowers must be ordered, food must be prepared, appropriate attire must be found. And this is only the beginning. Perhaps the most important decision to be made is the location where you will begin this new phase of your life. Tammy Prentice has always been fascinated by this question. Everywhere she goes, she visits wedding chapels. So it is no surprise that when she saw the church for sale at 1309 E. 18th St., this was her first thought.

Tammy has always enjoyed renovating buildings, giving new life to something once vital. This feeling seems even more potent, however, in regards to the Chapel. Here she was not only able to restore a building, but also give something back to the community. As she says, “It’s nice to have a place in Ada to give people something really special on their new day in their new life.” I believe she has succeeded.

One of the most important things about the Chapel is that it is essentially a blank slate. Walking inside, one is overwhelmed with the elegant simplicity of its white walls and trim, dark wood floors, and gold accents. Crystal chandeliers hang in

the foyer, over the altar, as well as in the bride and groom’s dressing rooms. Because of this, any colors may be used. One must not think of matching flowers to carpeting or bride’s maid dresses to decorations. It is a neutral zone, where the only memories are the ones to be made on that special day.

Even though they do not plan the wedding for you, they can help make your experience easier. They have partnerships in town with florists, caterers, designers, photographers, bakeries, as well as many other wedding related businesses. Because of these partnerships, the florist will know the layout of the chapel; you only need give your ideas and they can do the rest. The caterers know what is available and how they need to set up. This leaves the choices up to the happy couple, while leaving the legwork to the experts. The chapel holds up to 85 people, and the huge backyard can function as an outdoor reception fit for both children and adults.

Once the initial planning is done, all the bride and groom need do is show up with their wedding party and guests. One of the representatives of the chapel will be on hand to help with any concerns. Perhaps the temperature needs to be adjusted or the music is too loud—these are the only problems likely to arise, but they are still there to fix them quickly, leaving the wedding party relaxed and relatively

stressless. The bride and groom simply need to show up, go to their separate dressing rooms (with locking doors in between so the bride will not be seen), and get ready within their luxuriously designed quarters. The bride’s room is decorated in delicate white and gold, while the groom’s is darker and more masculine.

Once everyone is ready, the groom exits his room directly onto the stage/altar. The bride walks out the door leading out around the chapel so she can enter down the aisle without anyone seeing her. A white baby grand piano sits in the corner, playing songs of the couple’s choosing until it is time for the bride. And then, the wedding begins. Two people declare their love for each other, sanctified by the minister of their choice, and all within the environment of their own choosing.

The Chapel is not only for weddings, however. It can be used for recitals, poetry readings, speakers, or any other functions you might think of. Simply call Tammy Prentice at (580) 235-6181 or email her at [email protected] for more information. You can also visit the webpage, www.thechapelinada.com. The Chapel not only makes that special day simple for you, they delight in it. So why make a beautiful day more stressful than it should be? There are people who want to help. ■

If you think you’ve got talent -- amazing, exciting or even weird talent -- then Ada Homeless Services wants to see you participate in the first ever “Ada’s Got Talent” competition July 7-9. The event, being held to raise money for the homeless assistance and intervention work Ada Home Services does, will be held at the Dorothy Summers Auditorium on the East Central University campus.

Oh, and you could also win $1,000 if you are chosen as the overall winner of the competition.

Jessica Eastwood, director of Ada Homeless Services, said her organization is excited about the possibility of crowning this year’s “Ada’s Got Talent” champion, and she hopes the community will help support the event for a number of reasons.

“First of all, the work we do is critical to quite a few people in the Ada area, unfortunately,” she said. “We’re glad to be able to help, but it’s very sad to see how many people find themselves in need of emergency shelter because for

whatever reason they end up without a place to sleep.”

“We offer temporary shelter for those people, but we also offer temporary financial assistance to people who find themselves in danger of losing their place of residence, or who can’t pay their utilities for whatever reason,” she said. “To support the Ada’s Got Talent event is a great way to help these people.”

In addition to having the opportunity to help the less fortunate, those who compete in or support the Ada’s Got Talent event will most likely be surprised at the number of extremely talented people who live in the area.

“There are an awful lot of really talented singers and musicians in the area,” Eastwood. But I’m sure there are a lot of other talents that people in this area have that might be really exciting and interesting to watch. I think people will be really entertained and amazed by watching their neighbors show off their talents.”

Participants will compete in three

age groups: ages 1-12, 13-21, and 22 and up. Performances on July 7 and 8 will include preliminary rounds, with winners in each age group being announced at the Saturday, July 9 performances. Those age group winners will receive prizes, and then one overall winner will be awarded $1000.

“I realize we’ll have a lot of people want to sing and dance, and that’s okay,” Eastwood said. “Those are great talents and there are a lot of people around here who are terrific singers.”

“But what I’m also hoping is that we’ll have people bringing to the stage talents that surprise us. I’m hoping and expecting people to show up and perform talents that are strange, sort of unexpected and maybe even a little off the wall. That would make it a great contest.”

Tickets for the three-day event are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. For more information, phone Ada Homeless Services at (580)272-0211. ■

from the newest to the most experienced member, will vote the first day to decide whether or not that show will go on. This is one of the greatest strengths of the Youth Drama Camp—every voice is important, they work as a team, in unity.

The number of campers differs every year. The ages have ranged from 4-18, though the older students sometimes work as counselors or counselors-in-training. No matter how many students attend, every person will have a part, even if the director, Vicki Reifsnider, and the musical director, Rudy Lupinski, must re-write the play. It also doesn’t matter how much experience someone has; by the time the production is finished, the least experienced has risen to the expectations and example of those more highly trained. This pertains to more than just the performance and production, though. As Vicki says, “They all take care of each other. It’s wonderful.” The older students look after the younger, acting as older siblings, supporting them while also pushing them to be better.

The first two weeks of the camp, prior to production week and performances, are spent doing many of the traditional camp activities—water balloon fights, tie-dying, scavenger hunts, even engaging in the occasional prank. But they also make movies and rehearse for the performance. Camping away from Ada encourages unity within the group—acting as one and supporting each other in their endeavors. It allows students to grow. As Vicki states, “It makes them better human beings.” This gives them an outlet and allows them to share a little part of themselves with our community. It changes them, builds confidence, and gives them the opportunity to discover something about themselves that might otherwise have remained hidden. ■

Summer is upon us and with the snow cones and sprinklers, come the activities that children are usually too busy for during the school year. Bags are packed for family vacations, visiting relatives, or summer camps. Of all the opportunities available, though, one stands different above the rest; the ACT II Youth Drama Camp is not just a place to roast marshmallows and throw water balloons—though those might still be a necessity. It is a transformative experience that benefits both the individual and community.

For the past ten years, the Youth Drama Camp has spent three weeks in the summer preparing a musical to perform for the community. This year, they will be doing Night at the Wax Museum: The Musical, a wild romp through a museum as a group of students see history come alive, literally. Henry VIII is in love with Cleopatra, John Adams serves as Anne Boleyn’s divorce attorney, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid go in search of treasure, and the students are caught in the middle. However, while the characters in the play are exposed to adventures that broaden their horizons, so, too, are the students performing. The Youth Drama Camp enables young actors to experience something life changing, and thus encounter a whole other world.

The performances will be held at Dorothy Summer’s Theater on the ECU Campus. Though the performance times are set, daytime shows for summer school or large groups are available. Simply call Vicki Reifsnider, at (580) 421-5122 for details. Shows on Thursday-Saturday, June 16-18, will begin at 7:00. A Sunday matinee at 2:00, June 19th, is a possibility, yet still an uncertainty. Several actresses have other engagements that they might have to rush to afterward, so the camp, as a whole,

The USDA has certified her 20 acres, and that was no simple task. Before she could even begin to start sowing her seeds, the land had to be chemical and pesticide free for 36 months; every year she must be re-certified, though these visits from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture are quite welcome indeed. The inspectors, with their extensive knowledge, help with the occasional problem, leading Libby to the environmentally friendly and health-conscious solutions she needs.

Organic farming can be very difficult, though incredibly rewarding. As Libby says, “It’s hard to grow anything in Oklahoma because of the weather.” Add to this the restrictions of organics, and it becomes a true challenge. Most fertilizers contain large amounts of chemicals, as do pesticides and insecticides. Organic seeds and seedlings can also be difficult to find, not because of chemicals, but because of genetic modification. The key is to plan ahead and be open to new and creative solutions. Seedlings must be ordered

in January to pick up in April; natural remedies like garlic oil or fish emulsion can be used to fix common problems. Ladybugs happily call her farm home, much to Libby’s pleasure as well.

The rewards, however, far outnumber the obstacles. Organic farming is more environmentally friendly and better for your health. Chemicals can poison the soil and even seep through the skin of many fruits and vegetables. You might be trying to kill bugs, but a simple washing won’t stop you from ingesting those same toxins. That is why Golden Grain Farms uses only organic materials. The produce she doesn’t grow, and even the wheat that she grinds every morning for baking, comes from other organic farms in Oklahoma.

Since all her produce is Oklahoma grown, much of it quite literally in her backyard, it is also fresher; this translates to more nutritious and, of course, tastier. Most produce we find in the grocery store travels 1000 miles from the field to our shopping cart. This is one of the reasons

How many of us have the courage it takes to follow our passion, make our dreams a reality? Ten years ago, Libby Faulkner did

just that. Though she had spent 18 years working for the government, she simply could not deny her attraction to farming. Growing up on a wheat farm in Western Oklahoma it was simply, “In her blood.” So Libby decided to leap and started Golden Grain Farms.

Pictures of her family farm adorn the walls of her bakery, but her operation is different from the farm she called home—it is 100% certified USDA organic. Since Libby has always been interested in agriculture, she would read whatever she could about innovations in farming. When she discovered organic farming, and learned of the many health benefits, her way was clear. Her farm would be free of chemicals while also supporting other Oklahoma farmers.

she wanted to start farming. Libby wanted to make jams and jellies, but wanted the ingredients to be fresh, healthy, and organic. Now she has a full bakery and is able to offer an organic buying club as well. More important than that, however, is the role she can play in educating the public to the dangers of chemicals and the delights of healthy eating.

She frequently has groups of children come to the store for wheat grinding demonstrations, informing them about the healthy choices that they can make. “It’s very self-satisfying to share what you know with others,” Libby states. “If everybody makes a small difference, it might add up to a big difference one day.” What began as a passion for farming became a passion for education—helping others to improve their lives, one choice at a time. Whether it’s working with a group of children, chatting with the customers who frequent her store, grinding grain in the early morning hours, or tilling the soil after the day is done, Libby is fortunate; the work may be hard, but it’s worth every moment. To share in her passion, visit her website, www.goldengrainfarmsbakeryproduce.com or find her on facebook under Golden Grain Farms. Make your choices matter and love every minute. ■
