In Donna’s World... Donna Wallace — 4-H Program Coordinator

Visit

for all the latest updates regarding the Adair County 4-H Program.

Members in Action Twenty exhibitors weighed-in 48 head of market beef for the

2016 Adair County Fair. Heath Downing, Joe Herr, and Jennifer Holliday verified animals for the Iowa State Fair and AK-SAR-BEN 4-H LIVESTOCK SHOWS. Sophie Dorsey verified animals for the Iowa State Fair.

Hank Bohling completed another very successful Holiday Mail

for Heroes project with 3008 holiday greetings forwarded to service men and women, veterans and their families from Iowa to around the world.

Super job to each of our 4-H clubs for the many activities they

participated in during the Holidays. You helped to make someone’s Holiday brighter and enjoyed the satisfaction of knowing your efforts were worthwhile. Activities included prepar-ing and delivering cheer plates of cookies and candy to local residents and businesses to show appreciation, adopting a family, participating in the lighted Christmas parade, decorating trees, and visiting local residents and care centers.

Independent 4-H club members, Kate Oettchen, and Cara and

Paige Caltrider decorated a tree for Festival of Trees in Adair with hand designed reindeer on the tree bulbs and decorated and delivered Christmas cookies to area residents. Cara and Kate volunteered on a snow day by scooping sidewalks and driveways for some elderly people and a classmate suffering a serious illness.

ISU Extension and 4-H staff will be providing training for new 4-H club/project volunteers on Saturday, January 30, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Madison County Extension Office in Winterset. The training will also be held in Osceola, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Clarke County Fairgrounds Events Center Saturday, March 12. This is one more step in the total screening process for new volun-teers. 4-H leaders, or volunteers, with 3 years or less of experience are invited to the training designed to give new volunteers a better working knowledge of positive youth development, the Iowa 4-H Equation, and tools that will help you be more confident and capable in your role working with youth. This fun, hands-on training includes breakout sessions for Clover Kids volunteers and club/project volun-teers. Volunteers who attend receive a notebook of positive youth development resources. Morning refreshments, lunch and all materials are included so please go to http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/volunteertraining to register. Click on the registration link in the red box on the right. There is NO COST to volunteers to attend. Choose the location that works best for you.

4-H’ers will want to attend Design Boot Camp Plus on Saturday, February 20, 9 am – 1 pm, at the 4-H/FFA Center on the Adair County fairgrounds in Greenfield. Boot Camp will begin with presentation and hands-on activities by Sue Bogue, former and now retired Iowa 4-H program specialist. Sue will cover the elements and principles of design in a basic manner for 4-H’ers to understand. Participants are asked to bring a clothing, visual arts, or home improvement project (completed or in progress) to help them determine its elements of design. Karen Schulteis, county fair clothing event committee member and county fair judge, will follow with “What the Judge is Looking For?” Participants will learn how to be prepared for conference judging of their finished project. Claire Hall (county and state fair visual arts judge) and Jane Hayes-Johnk (Regional 4-H Program Specialist), will round-out the Camp with Copyright 101 explaining the “do’s” and “don’ts” and the “must haves”, when completing their 4-H exhibit. Mid-morning snacks will be provided. No charge to attend Boot Camp, but pre-registration is requested. Call the Extension office 641-743-8412 or email [email protected] by 2/12 to register.

Bonds at Home PROJECT Adair County 4-H’ers, Paisley Kintigh, Abby Engles, Terrin Gettler, Hope Kading, Brandon Raasch, and Ethan Blomme enjoyed the wonderful opportunity of interviewing seven individuals who were young kids their age in the mid-to-late 1940’s. Memories of family life including 4-H at that time were shared. The adults were happy to share and the 4-H’ers were eager to learn. A very worthwhile project that was enjoyed by all participants.

The continuing education class will be taught by Aaron Saeugling, ISU Extension Crop Specialist. There is a $20 class enrollment fee, payable at the class site to Adair County Extension. License holders can attend a continuing education session at any location, regardless of where they live, prior to the April 15th deadline. Angie’s Entries… Angie Engles - Families Coordinator & Office Manager

Many Iowans could easily point to the caregiving responsibilities of a co-worker with young children who may occasionally need time off from work to care for a child’s unexpected illness. But co-workers who provide care for an aging parent or an adult child with a disability often may go unnoticed, says Kim Brantner, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Caregiving can be a stressful responsibility. More than one in six Americans who work full or part time report assisting in the care for an elderly or adult-child family member, relative or friend. Most caregivers do not abandon their caregiving responsibilities because of work. Instead, they cope as best they can to balance what are often conflicting sets of responsibilities, Brantner said. Statistically, women are more likely to be caregivers. In the United States more than 61 percent of caregivers are women and more than half of these caregivers have made changes at work to meet caregiving demands. According to a survey conducted by AARP, 64 percent of current family caregivers in Iowa are women. The AARP survey describes caregivers as being heavily involved in the medical side of care of their loved ones, with about two-thirds of care-givers assisting with complex care, such as medication management, and overseeing other nursing and medical tasks, such as wound care, IVs and injections. In addition, most caregivers report assisting with transportation, shopping, household chores, meal preparation and managing finances. It can be challenging for caregivers to find the support that they need, Brantner said. That is why Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offers “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” in many locations throughout the state. The program provides information, support strategies, communication techniques, stress reduction ideas and resources to assist family caregivers with their concerns related to caregiving. This program will be held in Adair and Montgomery Counties this coming spring. In 2016, ISU Extension and Outreach will be offering Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes specifically for caregivers of children or adult-children with disabilities, as well as classes for caregivers of older adults. Classes will be held in Adair County beginning Thursday, April 7th and continuing Thursday evenings through May 5th. Classes will be held at the Greenfield City Hall Meeting room starting at 6:30 pm. Cost for the entire series is $25; financial assistance and payment arrangements can be made. For more information or to sign up today, contact Angie at 641-743-8412 or [email protected].

Serving Size: 1 cup Serves: 6 Cost Per Serving: $.67

Ingredients: 4 Best Baked Potatoes or 1 1/2 pounds

potatoes, cooked

1 tablespoon tub margarine

1 medium onion (coarsely chopped—about 1 cup)

1/2 cup green pepper, chopped (optional)

2 cups Homemade Chicken Broth, or 1 can (14.5-ounces) low sodium chicken broth

1 cup nonfat milk

1 cup frozen peas, thawed

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

4 slices (3 ounces) American cheese

Optional garnishes: Sliced green onion, bacon bits, and/or shredded cheese

Instructions: 1. Remove skins and mash potatoes into small pieces to make

about 3 cups. Set aside.

2. Melt margarine in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in onion and green pepper, if desired. Cook until the vegetables begin to soften (about 5 minutes).

3. Stir in the broth and heat to a boil. Stir in milk, potatoes, peas, and pepper. Heat through, stirring occasionally.

4. Add the cheese slices. Cook and stir about 2 minutes until cheese melts. Add more milk if soup is thicker than you prefer.

5. Add garnishes, if desired, and serve immediately.

Tips:

Try this recipe with our ‘Best Baked Potatoes’ as the base. Using already cooked potatoes means you can have this soup ready to eat and on the table in less than 15 minutes. Other frozen vegetables can be used instead of peas. Try corn, broccoli or mixed vegetables.
