Conducted and assisted with court-related research projects across circuit and district

courts within the state of Kentucky, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative skills,

involving public perceptions of access and fairness, judicial perceptions of court culture,

pretrial risk assessment validation, court delay, and judicial workload. Utilized established

research methodology (e.g., Dillman’s mixed-methods of survey research, focus groups,

interviews) and PASW 18.0 (Predictive Analytics SoftWare) statistical software in data

collection and analysis. Worked directly with Kentucky Court of Justice staff across the

state including circuit and senior judges, circuit and deputy clerks, and executive staff of

the Administrative Office of the Courts.

02/2009 – 12/2009

Research Assistant (temporary), Council of State Governments (CSG), American

Assisted with data collection for what would later be known as Pew’s 1 in 31 report on the

costs of corrections and community supervision. This temporary position consisted of

calling individual state and local agencies to gather supervision cost data, and conducting

preliminary analysis of the data.

Research Associate (independent sub-contractor), Commonwealth Research Consulting,

Inc., Lexington, KY.

Assisted as needed with data entry using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social

Sciences) statistical software, qualitative analysis, and the recording of notes for focus

groups concerning inmate perceptions of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). In

addition, developed abbreviated evaluation tools for National Institute of Corrections

(NIC) to improve researcher-practitioner collaboration (derived from a prior evaluation

tool).

Course Evaluation Highlights (Full results available by request):

Over 90% of students that completed an evaluation (42 out of 44) agreed

or strongly agreed the instructor treated the students with respect and was

accessible when needed. Over 80% of students agreed or strongly agreed

the instructor promoted active participation, was engaging, and

encouraged the students to ask questions and share ideas. Finally, over

70% agreed or strongly agreed the instructor fostered a class

environment conducive to learning, provided useful feedback, and

utilized educational technology effectively.

Over 70% of students agreed or strongly agreed they gained

substantively new knowledge because of the course, their interest in the

subject increased, the course was well organized, and the course

materials were well prepared.

In one qualitative comment, a student noted, “[Dr.]Adam Matz clearly

cares about his student’s success; he utilizes videos to help break up

[PowerPoint] presentations, and makes students engage with the content.

He was available during posted office hours, and listened to feedback

from students to make the test[s] more [accessible for] the students. He

brought in guest speakers to give us perspective – I would recommend

both the class and the instructor.”

Over 75% of students agreed or strongly agreed the instructor

communicated clearly, demonstrated an interest in the course material,

was willing to give help when needed, encouraged questions and

discussion, and clearly explained the grading criteria for the course.

Evaluations by Dr. Jonathan Cooper and peer observer Arizona Lin

indicated the instructor demonstrated an appropriate level of substantive

knowledge, presented material effectively, showed enthusiasm for the

topic, communicated clearly, and encouraged questions and critical

thinking. Dr. Cooper stated, “I was especially impressed with Mr. Matz’s

ability to articulate complex topics to his students in ways that they could

understand without dumbing down the material.”
