I am an Architectural Designer currently working towards my RIBA Part.3 and becoming a chartered Architect. I achieved a distinction for my final years design thesis project and completed my masters with a Merit with Commendation from Birmingham City University in 2018. In addition to a number of years working within practice gaining experience within residential, education and commercial sectors, I have personally collaborated on a growing number of private residential projects. These range from small scale extension work to substantial modernisation and house re-ordering projects, from concept design through to completion. I greatly value the experiences I’ve gained within practice and also working independently. I have a passion for high quality sustainable design and am currently training to become a certified Passivhaus Designer with the Passivhaus Trust.

Having worked within a variety of architectural practices and directly with clients on private residential projects, the experiences I have gained have led me to believe in the importance of viewing architecture as a ‘social enterprise’. I firmly believe that the field of architecture needs to take greater responsibility for our human and environmental well-being. Proposed Project Site Plan | Social & Physical Infrastructure Concept.

2018 | PresentGlancy Nicholls Architects,Birmingham: I joined GNA in September 2018 and work within the education team helping to deliver school projects and feasibility studies within the Midlands and further afield. I am now working alongside an Associate Director to deliver the largest new secondary school the practice has undertaken for 2,400 pupils. This entails working closely with the wider design team, contractor and various specialisms to refine and value engineer the project as we move forward into the construction phase.

The opportunity has allowed me to take on new roles and responsibilities within our team as we develop the detailed design of the project. My roles include: principal point of contact for the contractor and wider design team, team management, organisational resourcing, delegation of work load to the team, responsibilities for the team to hit its required drawing package targets and to assist the junior members of the team.

Education |

RIBA Pt.3: 2018 | Present Architectural Practice (RIBA Part 3 Exemption) - PgDip, at Birmingham City University.

Passivhaus: 2020 | Present AECB CarbonLite, Certified Passivhaus Designer Training.

RIBA Pt.2: 2015 | 2018 Masters Degree in Architecture (RIBA Pt.2) from Birmingham City University. Merit with Commendation, receiving a Distinction for my final year design thesis project.

RIBA Pt.1: 2005 | 2009 BA (Hons), Architecture & Planning, (RIBA Pt.1) from the University of West of England, Bristol. 2:1 with Commendation.

A-Levels: 2000 | 2002 A-Levels in Business Studies, Geography, Design Technology and Information Technology from Bishops Cleeve Sixth Form, Cheltenham.

2012 | PresentI began working on residential projects in collaboration with a director of a local architecture practice. This grew into working for myself on projects from design to completion for friends, family and recommendations. My largest and most significant project has been a million pound residential property in Cheltenham with a project value of £375k. Other key works have included:

- The conservation & restoration of a traditional octagonal Methodist Church into a new residential dwelling, consisting of initial design work, planning and working drawings.- The re-ordering and modernisation of two historic cottages into a single residential dwelling. The project undertook a series of design exercises to improve the quality of the internal layout, leading to the creation of working drawings for tender submission.- Significant alterations and extensions to two large bungalows in Malvern, both from recommendations, one including a traditional oak framed orangery and the other a contemporary zinc and timber clad eco property.

Private Architectural Projects:

2013 | 2015At Roberts Limbrick I worked within the Education & Commercial Teams gaining a wide range of experience from initial concept design through to planning and detailed technical drawing. Working alongside a senior associate I developed my skills as a Project Architect on a variety of schemes, liaising with clients, contractors and the wider design team.

Experience |

2004 | 2005My year in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was arranged through the Methodist Church where I helped setup and run youth work and Fair Trade projects. I worked in local primary and secondary schools teaching PE classes. Following hurricane Ivan a lot of work was carried out repairing housing and that coincided with my decision to study architecture. I volunteered in a local technical colleague in exchange for technical drawing and CAD lessons to aid in my university applications.

2000 | 2004Alliance & Leicester was my first formal job where I quickly advanced from cashier to customer sales adviser and finally onto a financial advisor training programme. My time there helped me develop a wide range of diverse skills such as project management, customer service and communication skills which have been invaluable within architectural practice.

Tectonics Study | Final Component Model

Principle design piece informing the central project concept of creating social and physical infrastructures through a component wall.

Thesis Abstract

How can a programme of infrastructure fiction be sensitively introduced to an urban context that critically responds to the needs of the community, whilst providing a richness of expression that reflects the past?

I also helped to refine the detailed design of several projects throughout the construction process, overcoming challenges and helping to maintain the integrity of the scheme.

- A project I gained particular experience and satisfaction from was in designing a substantial extension for a school in Hereford for children with special educational needs (SEN). Being able to work closely with the teachers, children and contractors to design a building to suit their specific needs and to see the project through to completion.

2009 | 2010 Following the completion of my Architecture Degree RIBA Pt.1 from UWE, Bristol I completed a one year placement at Quattro Design. My time was divded between gaining valuable experience in the education and housing teams.

2010 | 2012 Yiangou Architects, Cirencester: At Yiangou’s I worked directly with a partner and project architect on large scale, high-end residential properties. My work ranged from helping take schemes from concept design, through planning, working drawings to completion. The scope of work enabled a greater degree of time to be spent on design, focusing on detailing each project to a high degree.
