Founded in 1967, Disabled Sports USA is a charitable organization that provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in sports. What began as a program to serve Vietnam veterans has grown into one of the nation’s largest multi-sport, multi-disability organizations, annually serving more than 60,000 wounded warriors, youth, and adults with disabilities. A member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, Disabled Sports USA offers programs in more than 50 summer and winter sports through its nationwide network of 130+ community-based chapters.

Adapt2Achieve, a program of Disabled Sports USA, provides adaptive sports training to coaches, instructors, and volunteers allowing for more individuals with disabilities to get active. Training includes in-person conferences, sport-specific clinics, online learning, and manuals designed to improve the safety and quality of adaptive sports in communities across the nation. Adapt2Achieve works with various national organizations to help them develop their own sports inclusion best practices. Since 2009, more than 300 organizations have participated in Adapt2Achieve multi-day conferences held across the country.

We are glad you are here. On behalf of Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA), I would like to welcome you to the Adapt2Achieve Leadership Conference in Rochester. I personally am looking forward to meeting and engaging more of our chapter leaders, partners, and stakeholders in the adaptive sports movement.

This annual event focuses on “Advancing Adaptive Sport.” Nearly 200 adaptive sports professionals and VA medical providers from across the country are here to learn about technological advancements in adaptive sports improving safety, and reducing risk, ultimately leading to a better experience for our athletes. It is for this reason, we particularly want to highlight abuse prevention and water safety this year.

We are excited to convene the conference in Rochester, a place I personally know well. We want to thank Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA) and Cape Ability Outrigger Ohana, Inc (CAOO) for serving as our host chapters this year as well as give a special shout out to ROCSports for their leadership and support.

The conference would not be possible without the support of our longtime valued partner, The Bob Woodruff Foundation. Furthermore, through the support of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Adaptive Sports Grant program, Disabled Sports USA is able to expand participation in this year’s conference both in number of attendees as well as valuable subject matter.

We have invited leading experts in the adaptive sport industry to deliver training over the next few days, many of whom are part of the DSUSA network. Thank you again for attending the Disabled Sports USA’s Adapt2Achieve Leadership Conference. You and your organizations are our greatest asset and we could not accomplish what we do without partners like you.

Warm regards,

Glenn Merry, DSUSA Executive Director

Lindsay BallParalympic Alpine Skier

Lindsay Ball, a native of Maine, started alpine skiing when she was six-years-old and got hooked on the sport immediately. She started racing competitively in high school, participating in her first Ski Spec in 2008 and a number of Diana Golden races and other events hosted by DSUSA chapters. In 2012 she was named to the National team. She had the opportunity to compete for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi, one of three women with visual impairments selected for the team (her guide was Diane Barras, an alpine race coach with Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation). While skiing is her first love, running is her second. Last year she completed the Buffalo Marathon and this past April she tackled the Boston Marathon. She is completing her undergraduate degree in Adaptive Physical Education at The College at Brockport. Afterwards, she plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Adaptive PE with a goal of teaching or working in the adaptive sports field.
