C LASS T IM E FO R THIS TASK TO DAY.

Task 2: Research the following topics for the colonizers and the

indigenous population. Use any of the note-taking systems you have

learned this year.

Laws and Beliefs: What are the most important native laws and beliefs?

How do native laws and beliefs reflect their environment and setting? How

are these similar or different from the laws and beliefs of the colonizer?

Social Organizations: Describe the values of the native society and

yourself as a colonizer. Which values are most needed to keep the

settlement peaceful and productive, and why are they so? How can you

protect these?

Environment: You have chosen a specific place to settle. What

responsibilities do you have for this place? What will you charter provide

to preserve or develop it in a manner that is sustainable?

C LASS T IM E FO R THIS TASK TO DAY.

Task 2: Research the following topics for the colonizers and the

indigenous population. Use any of the note-taking systems you have

learned this year.

Ways of life: The three groups have different ways of daily living -

housing; making money or trading; laws and rules and governing its

people. How can you accommodate each way of life in such a small area?

Will there be compromises? How will you guarantee fairness (if at all?)

Animals and plants: Your settlement has many different types of unique

plants and animals. What are some important interactions between these

organisms (including humans)? Should these interactions be preserved,

and how? What dependencies do these organisms have, and how canthese be protected? What will be the impact of any plants or animals that

you introduce to your location?

Task 3: A timeline of most important historical events of last

200-300 years (5 - 10 events), including a brief summary of the

importance of the event.

To Create Your Own Timeline of important events:

• Go > Applications> Timeliner 5.0 > Timeliner 5.1 (move this

app to your doc).

• Open Timeliner > New Timeline > choose Standard Timeline

• Before you start your Timeline, you should know which

events and which pictures you are going to use for eachevent.

• Pictures must be in JPG format. If they're not, it's easy to

change: just add ".jpg" to the end of the file name.

Do we all know how to get the timeline

into PDF format?

Task 4: Produce a set of 3 maps for your settlement: Physical landscape (including

contour lines); Resources (including location of plants, animals, minerals, etc.);

Climate. Include a legend, labels a compass rose.

Step 1: Find a clear outline map, preferably a JPG file you can save to your desktop.

Print 4 copies for your group.

Step 2: Decide who in your group will be responsible for which map: 1. Climate, 2. a

map for major landforms and bodies of water, 3. Vegetation + Natural Resources, and

4. final map showing your settlement location with contour lines.

Step 3: Using the two atlases, find relevant data and NEATLY sketch out your map's

content. Don't forget a label, key and compass rose.

Step 4: Carefully study your sources of data for each map: PHYSICAL MAP,

CLIMATE MAP, VEGETATION + NATURAL RESOURCES MAP, SETTLEMENT

MAP

PLAN OUT how to represent different types of data on ONE MAP. What are some

ideas for this? Sketch in pencil before you commit to colour. Neatness is

important.

Step 5: When your maps are complete, take a photo and post to your WIKI. You will

also hand in the hard copies.

Some writing ideas for your Wiki:

• Why did you choose to put your

settlement where you did?

• What plants, animals and otherresources are there for you to use

already, and how will you use them to

advance your settlement?

• What plants, animals and otherresoureces will you need to bring in to

your Settlement and why?

• What is the purpose of your

settlement?

• What possible problems exist for your

settlement?

Task 5: Create a Settlement Charter. A charter is an agreement

• What do we offer this place?

Discuss what your settlement plans to do in regards to the

following:

• Laws and Beliefs

Now, as you write your group's charter, be sure to include each

bullet point above as a sub-title of your charter agreement.

what you want as a group for your Settlement Charter:

The discussion leader will also be

responsible for making sure that the

final draft of the charter gets onto

Google Mags:

• Independently or with your group, go to Google Maps and

bring up a map of Hong Kong.

• On this map, find our school on this map & find where youlive.

• What are the elevations of these two places? What do you

notice about where these two places are located

geographically?

• Look at a map of the entirety of Hong Kong.• What do you notice, overall, about the relationship between

where the settlements are in Hong Kong and its

geography?

• Look at some more maps, of other places around the world.

Look for relationships between geography and settlements.• Finally, write about some things you discovered about the

relationship between where people live and the geography

of a place? Do this on your Wiki and copy to your Weebly.
