IntroductionIntroduction Given current technological advancements in

desktop computing interactive 3D models of objects and 3D Virtual Environments (VEs) can be experienced through the Web, using the hardware that can be found in common, low-cost personal computers.

3D web content is being deployed in a variety of applications: education & training, ecommerce, architecture and virtual cities, virtual communities and virtual museums

Intro. Cont.Intro. Cont. This presentation is designed to introduce you to the

concepts and techniques of adaptive 3D Web sites. It will provide an introduction to 3D Web sites, with an

overview of the major application areas and mentioning the main technologies, concentrating on standard ones.

The adaptivity section will provide the context of 3D Web sites by first looking at analogies and differences with respect to Web-based hypermedia, and then discussing the problems of modeling and adaptation.

In the Architecture for Adaptive 3D Web sites it will describe an example of a full architecture for adapting 3D Web content.

A case study will then be considered in the domain of e-commerce.

The conclusion will discuss current research challenges and directions.

Web3D technologies: The languages, protocols and software tools that make it possible to build 3D models of objects and 3D VEs that can be experienced through the Web, using common personal computers

Complex 3D Web content: virtual cities, visualizations of scientific data, and virtual museums.

Web technologies: content (represented in a proper format) is stored on a server and is requested by a client (typically, through HTTP), where it is displayed by a browser, or, more often, by a plug-in for a traditional Web browser.

3D Web content: can be strongly integrated with existing Web content, both by augmenting Web sites with 3D interactive content (e.g., a 3D model can appear into a Web page together with HTML content) and by displaying most types of Web content (e.g., images, sounds, videos) inside a 3D VE accessible through the Web.

Note: most Web3D technologies neither require nor preclude immersion, and 3D Web content can also be experienced with the input/output devices of today's common personal computers (i.e., CRT or LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse).
