FromtheRabbiDear Friends, As August rolls around, I am excited and honored to mark a full year serving as your rabbi. As I look back on the past year, I remember our many happy celebrations and events, and hold the difficult moments we’ve faced over the past few months. Last fall we celebrated beautiful High Holidays full of music, prayer, and delicious food. One memory that stands out to me is the day we built our community sukkah with the Hebrew School families — an afternoon of laughter and teamwork. Our Chanukah party once again filled the Rockport Opera House with latkes, dancing, music, and candlelight. I love looking back at our multilingual megillah reading on Purim featuring queens, unicorns, and harmonicas.

I am also thinking back on the ways that our community adapted as COVID-19 became a worldwide pandemic. We swiftly navigated bringing our community online to share a Passover seder. We began having connection points throughout the day, with morning community check-ins, evening learning sessions, online holiday celebrations, and more. We changed the way that we interacted, but we never stopped showing up to check in on one another. One theme you may have noticed in my memories is the prevalence of Jewish holidays as time markers. As I move into my second year as your rabbi, and as we collectively move into the High Holiday season once again, we recognize that our tradition is an anchor for us throughout uncertain times. Even if we gather in different ways than before, coming together as a community builds our connections that keep us going in difficult times. I don’t know what the next year is going to bring. I’m already thinking about potential guest speakers, educational opportunities, and ways to creatively continue to be in community together that take advantage of our distance instead of letting it make us distant. I am looking forward with excitement and hope to the year ahead. May we continue to strengthen one another. B’Shalom, Rabbi Solochek

The Ritual Committee will be publishing the memorial booklet The Eternal Light this autumn. As is our tradition, the proceeds from this booklet will support our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah group of young people in Jewish activities. Please give your name, the name(s) of loved ones you wish to remember and a check to Adas Yoshuron Synagogue (attention: Ritual Committee). The form and fees are below. Thank you for your support. Adas Yoshuron Ritual Committee

The cost to list each name is $18. A half-page at $100 or a full page at $200 may be purchased (to include up to a maximum of 6 and 13 names/lines, respectively). Please send your check payable to Adas Yoshuron Synagogue, P.O. Box 1250, Rockland, ME 04841 by August 25th. Payment by credit card may be made by calling the office at (207) 594-4523.

At our Annual Meeting on June 28, Adas Yoshuron members joined together online to celebrate the accomplishments of 2019–2020 and to express gratitude for all of the contributions, hard-work and participation in services, study, social action, and togetherness that make our community rich and vibrant. We recognized Shelley Kushner and Linda Garson Smith for their service to the board as they ended their terms, and were relieved that they won’t be going far. Linda will continue to head our monthly volunteer program with the Fishes and Loaves Soup Kitchen at St. Peter’s Church, and Shelley will continue to be a member of the Food in Jewish Culture and Programming Committees, as well as lending her wisdom and experience to help make Adas Yoshuron what it is. Our board has two talented and capable new members: Nancy Scovern and David Theriault. They will join existing (also capable and talented!) Board members Laurence Coe, Cliff Dacso, Stuart Finkelstein, Ben Koenig, Dale Lavi, Sara Levy, Denise Singer, Liz Snider and Ken Wexler Committees are the indispensible factor that gives our synagogue its strength and vitality. Often a smaller group can be more focused and efficient in dealing with issues than the full board. Our committees are created to provide counseling and advice for the board or to handle a task on the board’s agenda. Committees are a place where members can make a real difference in the policies, programs, and vision that helps Adas Yoshuron

thrive. So, if volunteering on a committee like the Area Interfaith Outreach, Building and Grounds, Security, Bylaws, Hineni, Education, Finance/Investment, Food in Jewish Culture, Fundraising/Endowment, Membership, Programming or Ritual interests and inspires you, please contact Lenora via

[email protected]. She will connect you with a committee chair who will welcome you with open arms. There are many more people who make

contributions in other ways and while we recognized some of them at the Annual Meeting, it’s worth thanking them again. So thank you to: Security Committee, Covid Response Team, Rabbinic Advisory Committee, Volunteers of the Soup Kitchen, Adult Education students, Torah studiers, the Morning Prayers and Check-in group, Hebrew School teachers, Hebrew School students, parents and volunteers,

and to our generous donors. Having this strong community is so important as the summer continues and Covid 19 keeps us from meeting in person. Finally, to Rabbi Solochek. I can’t imagine our congregation going through this year without your kind, compassionate, thoughtful spiritual and humanitarian leadership. While celebrating a Passover Seder, a Bat Mitzvah, and a Bris on Zoom may make you a truly a 21st century Rabbi, it is your scholarship and heart that touch us all with your “old soul” wisdom. ~Stuart Finkelstein

JulyBoardMeeJngThe board met on July 20. Some of the highlights include:

and arranged for new board members to safely tour the building with the architect • agreed to schedule a board retreat for a full day in August

The board next meets on Monday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. ~Liz Soloway Snider, Secretary

RabbinicAdvisoryCommiYeeThe Rabbinic Advisory Committee (RAC) is honored to support Adas Yoshuron’s next chapter — the one we’re writing together with Rabbi Lily Solochek — by nurturing relationships and facilitating communication among the Rabbi, the Congregation, and the Board of Directors. We’re ready to collect and curate feedback from all directions, and to offer guidance, insight, and support as appropriate. During our monthly meetings with Rabbi Solochek, we’ll discuss their goals and share community feedback. Please help us ensure the success of this team effort! Reach out any time at [email protected].

LookingforMissingBooksWe are missing several of our copies of the Etz Chayim chumashim, the large, red Torah and commentary books we use on Shabbat and holidays. If you have borrowed a copy, please contact the office and let us know so that we can arrange a safe return to the synagogue. Thank you!

FromtheRitualCommiYeeThe Ritual Committee met with the Rabbi to discuss our ritual practices going forward. The committee has evaluated our need for prayer books. In addition, the committee has brainstormed ideas to enhance and deepen our rituals surrounding Judaism. This autumn, as we have in the past, will publish the memorial booklet The Eternal Light. We welcome new members for the regular committee and ad hoc members for special projects. Please call Denise Singer (236-6655), if you are interested. Thank you. ~Denise Singer, Ritual Committee, Chair

HebrewSchoolUpdateThe Education Committee is putting together registration packets and parent handbooks for the 2020/2021 school year. These will be mailed out in mid August. For more information please contact the office. A final decision regarding in-person/remote learning will be made in the next few weeks. This decision will take into account the Maine Framework for Returning to Classroom Instruction and be in line with the functioning of public schools in our area.

SoupKitchenThankYouforJuly5Thank you to Kim Lafone who helped me cook finger lickin’ barbecued chickin.’ I’d like to thank the following people who cooked at home and delivered the food to the church: Richard Aroneau for his delightful potato salad (I want the recipe, Richard), Steve Guttenplan for a gorgeous colorful green salad with dressing (served in separate containers), Melissa Statman for tasty brownies (yes, I ate part of one) and Phyllis Hemler for her first time ever luscious lemon squares (yes, I tasted part of one)! I delivered extra meals to the Belfast Soup Kitchen where they were received with delight. See what’s in store for our August 2 Soup Kitchen. ~Linda Garson Smith

David TheriaultAfter graduating from of Maine Maritime Academy in 1968, David served as an engineering officer in the U.S Merchant Marine for three and a half years. He was employed by Stone & Webster Engineering Corp. for six years, after leaving the Merchant Marines. In 1976 he changed careers and entered Boston University Dental School, graduating in 1980. Later that year, David accepted a general practice residency at Boston City Hospital Oral Surgery Department. After completion of the residency he was employed by Harvard Community Health Center and taught Operative Clinical Dentistry to students at Harvard Dental School. In 1990 he purchased a general dental practice in Rockland. He continued to practice general dentistry in Rockland for 30 years, until his retirement in 2020. David is a past Board member and Vice President of Adas Yoshuron. He has been a member of the Rockland Rotary Club for 27 years and is a past President. He currently serves on the Board of the Georges River Land Trust David lives in Rockport with his wife Suzan. They have two adult children and four grandchildren.

Nancy ScovernI was born in Clifton, New Jersey and lived for many years as a young adult in the Boston area, before moving to Maine in 1988. It took me a few years to find my way to active Jewish life and Adas Yoshuron; Rabbi Amita Jarmon was influential in my coming to understand that Judaism could be relevant to me, a feminist, lesbian, and social activist. As a member of Adas Yoshuron, I have served in various capacities, including ongoing participation on the High Holidays Enrichment Committee, serving as chair of the Programming Committee for several years, prior stints on the synagogue Board, and most recently working on the Rabbinic Advisory Committee. I've had a varied work life. After dropping out of college I worked as a tradeswoman for many years, first as a welder at the Quincy shipyard (General Dynamics) and then as a union apprentice and then journeywoman electrician in the Boston local of the IBEW. After moving to Maine I got my BA at the University of Maine at Orono. My first job after that was at Penquis CAP, where I helped found the Penquis Dispute Resolution Center, worked in the Child and Family Mediation program, and ran a Violence Prevention grant in the Milo school system. I also served as a mediator in the Maine court system. I worked with a group of activists to found the Waldo Community Development Federal Credit Union (now Downeast Credit Union in Belfast). It was that effort that inspired me to go back to school for my MBA. Most recently I worked for a local insurance agency for many years, and retired in 2019. I live in Warren with my spouse Nancy Button and our cat Challah. I am looking forward to working with Rabbi Solochek and serving again on the synagogue Board.

TuB’AvObservedonAugust5Tu B’Av, the 15th Day of Av, is both an ancient and modern holiday. Originally a post-biblical day of joy, it served as a matchmaking day for unmarried women in the Second Temple period (before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.). Tu B’Av was almost unnoticed in the Jewish calendar for many centuries but it has been rejuvenated in recent decades, especially in the modern state of Israel. In its modern incarnation it is gradually becoming a Hebrew-Jewish Day of Love, slightly resembling Valentine’s Day in English-speaking countries.
