Commentary: Belle Media is a micro Company and has been in business for 5 years. In addition to employees, we have collaborators who engage as required in projects. We have been involved with high-profile projects about the Olympics and The World Cup and are currently developing a project in Greenock. This presentation shows how we used social media to broaden awareness and interest in our recent project Hurricane Hutchs Top 10 Ships of the Clyde.2

The Clyde Steamer book market is crowded as you can see from this photograph of the book store on board Paddle Steamer Waverley. We have found a space in this market with a beautiful, full-colour, publication of photos and engaging stories about a local hero. Robin Hutchison is a retired Captain with Caledonian MacBrayne. He has selected his top ten favorite ships from the 40 Clyde ships on which he served during his career. The book contains his stories about the hard work and life and times aboard these ships.

We executed this project in 4 months. Our friend and CalMac Historian, Ian McCrorie supported the project and wrote the foreword. Web development was volunteered by a Silicon Valley Engineer who was born in Largs. The web site has attracted comments from around the world.3

The aim of the project is to sell books and we printed 2000. Our goal is to reprint to meet demand for Christmas 2014. We also wanted to capture the memories of Captain Hutchison and to engage Scots, both near & far from home, to share their memories. We have achieved all these goals and enjoyed the experience. The book launch was held in Glasgow and at the McLean Gallery in Greenock. Weve sold 700 books and the project is on target to achieve all our goals.4

So, the sum up our project, we have engaged partners in Scotland, England and California to bring together stories and photographs of recent times. Captain Hutchisons life is an inspirational story of work and effort. Weve encouraged others around the world to read and write about the post-war Ships of the Clyde.

Our web-site is a Social Media development which matches the looknfeel of the book.

These ships belong to Inverclyde. This book and website celebrate who we are. We have executed this project to harness The Best of Greenock our people, history, scenery and our strong community whose greatest pleasure is to share good times in each others company.8
