The ProblemLet’s face it, most decisions madeby the automakers are based onone factor — cost. Without a doubt,it’s less expensive to manufactureand install smaller anti-sway bars, orin some cases, leave them offcompletely!

Your stock suspension does anadequate job in most situations.Where you may run into a problem(no pun intended) is when you needto make a sudden lane change toavoid an accident or when you findthat curve in the road is a littlesharper than you thought. As yourvehicle begins to turn, the body will“roll” transferring weight to theoutside wheels. This causes thefront end to “plow”, or what istechnically known as understeer.The result — your vehicle wants tokeep going straight and you’re outof control!

Neutral SteerThe front and rear of the vehicle willdrift an equal amount and you willend up close to the starting point(actually, you will end up a littlefurther out since the front and rearare drifting the same).

UndersteerFront tire drift causes the vehicle torefuse to turn as sharply as thedirection of the wheels are pointed.If the wheels and throttle are heldsteady, the vehicle will make an everwidening circle.

OversteerRear tire drift is greater than that ofthe front and the rear tends to “spinout”. The vehicle will end up closerto the center of the circle becausethe rear tire drift changes thedirection inward.

Tire DriftThe transfer of weight to the outsidefront wheel with an inadequate frontor rear bar distorts the tires so theyactually drift sideways duringcornering.
