The Addison Central School District is committed to its mission of providing all students with a safe, engaging, and challenging learning environment in order to ensure that they are prepared for success in a global society. On March 15th, district staff participated in various professional development activities to further that goal. Some of these activities included student safety, curriculum alignment, awareness of the Next Generation Standards, and embedding writing in all curricular areas by grade level.

The 10th-grade Thoughtful Classroom team meets to discuss writing samples from their students. They discussed ways to encourage stu-dents to write in all content areas.

School staff met with local law enforcement personnel to discuss student safety and solidify protocols.

Teachers from Valley and Tuscarora spent the morning participating in professional de-velopment learning about the Next Generation Math Standards. The focus for learning was on the Standards for Mathematical Practice and what these practices look like in action in the classroom. Teachers started the morning by reviewing the introduction to the standards. They worked collaboratively to identify key ideas in the Next Generation standards that in-clude students being able to solve unstructured problems while working in teams, the reading, writing, listening and speaking embedded in math, and understand-ing the use of technology tools in the application of math. Staff viewed videos of exemplary practice and reflected on instructional practice in their own classroom. The morning wrapped up with a staff self-assessment and gath-ering feedback for future professional development.

Food service workers meet to find ways to better serve the needs of the students.

ELA and math teachers at the middle and high schools continued to solidify their knowledge of the Next Genera-tion Learning Standards, which fosters standards for stu-dents to build lifelong reading and writing skills. Mr. Dufort said "It's a good practice to meet regularly as a de-partment and also with the special education department in order to make sure all curriculum is aligned and to formal-ize a common language so students are familiar with aca-demic vocabulary they are exposed to year to year.”

Staff in the Transportation Department met in the high school cafeteria to discuss ways to make student travel more safe and efficient.

Addison para-professionals participated in a NYSUT work-shop focused on implementing mindfulness in the class-room. Participants explored the definition of mindfulness and how it relates to the instruction of the whole child in the class-room.
