hIGh vISIbILItYHigh-visibility clothing, is any clothing worn that has highly reflective properties or a colour that is easily discernible from any background. Yellow waistcoats worn by emergency services are a common example. Part of the surface of the garment may have retroreflective stripes. This way they become much more visible in the dark for observers near a light source, such as the driver of a car with its headlights on. The pattern of the retroreflecting parts also helps to distinguish between objects and people. Area reflective fabric has proven to be the most effective way of outlining the body, so that drivers can distinguish a human shape at night.

For greater visibility during the daytime, very bright colours are used for the main body of the garment by means of fluorescent material.

the following equipment is used to assess the properties of gloves specified by the EN388 standard.

A Martindale wear and abrasion tester is used to measure the abrasion resistance. The test involves rubbing samples, cut from the palms of gloves, against a standard glass paper until a hole is worn through one of the samples. The number of abrasion cycles is used to assess the performance.

A Sodemat cut tester is used to measure the resistance to cutting. Samples are cut from gloves and placed in a frame which enables a circular, counter-rotating blade to slice through the glove material. The number of cycles required by the blade to cut through the glove are recorded. These are converted into a cutting index by comparison with the number of cycles required to cut through a standard reference material. The standard now allows for an alternative test method to be used for highly cut resistant products and this test is described in EN ISO 13997. It measures the force required to make a cut in the test sample 20mm long and is often referred to as the ISO Cut Test. Performance levels are established according to cutting index.

Puncture and tear resistance are measured with a tensometer. Puncture resistance is measured as the force required to break through samples from gloves with a standard puncture needle (it should be noted that the design of this needle is comparable to that of a large nail, and the puncture strength from this test cannot be used to assess resistance to puncture by hypodermic needles). Tear resistance is measured as the force required to tear apart samples from the glove, which are in the form of a pair of trousers (this test is also known as a trouser tear test). The legs of the trouser samples are pulled apart and the maximum force used to assess tearing resistance of the material.

EN420 General Requirements for GlovesThis standard includes tests for glove dimensions, dexterity and allergens. For example, leather gloves are required to have a chromium VI content less than the limit of detection. Gloves are required to be neutral with respect to skin contact.

GENERAL REquIREmENTS FOR EN471:2003/A1:2007

EN471 is the European standard for high visibility in high visibility clothing for professional use. It specifies the requirements for the garments that increase the visibility of the user both during the day and night. It aims to make users more visible in dangerous situations under all lighting conditions. The EN471 standard is based on two classes of different performances:

x: SuRFAcE AREA OF THE FLuOREScENT AND REFLEcTIVE mATERIALS The total area of the fluorescent material combined with the total area of the reflective material (stripes) determines visibility. A larger area is more visible and therefore is ranked in a higher classification. Combining garments (such as pants with jacket) to attain improved visibility is possible. Consequently, this combination will also rank in a higher classification. However, all garments are tested separately. The proportions of the mandatory basic material must be 50% (+/-10%) at the front and back of the garment.

Y: quALITY OF THE REFLEcTIVE mATERIALSThe quality of the reflective material is measured by the so-called reflection coefficient. This coefficient indicates how much light is reflected by the material from the source to the observer. In other words, the amount of light that is reflected back to the driver from the headlights. Two classes, 1 and 2, can be distinguished. The reflectance depends on the angle of the source with respect to the observer, and the angle of the material. Class 2 is widely used; performance class 1 is not current.

This European standard relates to protective clothing for rain, wind and cold in temperatures higher than -5 ° C. This standard specifies the requirements and testing methods applied to materials and seams of protective clothing with regard to bad weather conditions (for instance: rain or snow, fog and damp)

Y: WATER VApOuR RESISTANcE The classic unit (g / m² per 24 hours) was easy to understand. However, the EN 343 uses a value of evaporative resistance (m². Pa / W)), which is measured by the so-called “skin model” (skin test EN11092). Important information for a better understanding: The higher the RET value, the stronger the vapour resistance of the material; consequently, less vapour passes in case of a high RET value. The laboratory performs this static test at 35°C. Breathable clothing removes the perspiration from the skin and the garment. If too much moisture accumulates in the garment, the condensation creates the impression of moist skin. In cold conditions the wearer runs the risk of cooling off quickly; in warm conditions the heart rate increases and there is a possibility of the development of thermal stress. A person feels well when the amount of perspiration produced by the body is equivalent to the amount of perspiration that is eliminated.
