The ProgramSwedishFoot&AnkleSurgeryandMedicineProgramwithReconstructiveRearfoot/AnkleSurgeryisathree-yearprograminfootandanklemedicineandsurgery,includingextensivetraininginreconstructionoftherearfootandankle.Ithasbeendevelopedwithspecial emphasisonamultidisciplinaryapproachtolower-extremitydisorders.

TheprogramisaccreditedbytheCouncilonPodiatricMedicalEducationasaPodiatric Medicine&SurgeryResidencywithadded reconstructiverearfoot/anklesurgerycredential(PMSR/RRA).Tworesidentsareselectedeachyear.

Thisresidencybeganin1969astheWaldoResidencyProgramandmovedtoitspresentlocationatSwedishin1997.

The CurriculumTheProgramishighlyacademicwithastrongsurgicalvolume.Eachresidentlogswellover1,000procedures.Residentsarerequiredtolecturedailytovisitingstudentsandareencouragedtopresentonalocalandnationallevel.WeeklyGrandRounds,monthlyJournalClubmeetingsandFiresideChatsarewell-attendedbyphysiciansonstaff.Residentsattendcourses,includingmicroneurovascularsurgery,AOfixationandarthroscopy(forwhichfundingisprovidedbySwedish,theWaldoMedicalFoundationandtheInternationalFoot&AnkleFoundation).

Manyofthespecialtyrotationstakeplaceathighlyregardedlocalhospitals,includingHarborviewMedicalCenterandVirginiaMasonMedicalCenter.Inthethirdyear,resi-dentsdevotemuchoftheireducationtotherefinementoftheirknowledgeandskillsinfootandanklereconstructionandtraumasurgery. AlargepartofthethirdyearisspentwithJohnM.Schuberth,D.P.M.,atKaiserPermanenteinSanFrancisco.Residentsareinvolvedwiththe SwedishWoundHealingCenter,wherethey functionasanintegralpartofthemulti-disciplinarymedicalstaff.

An Emphasis on ResearchTheresidencyholdsastrongcommitment toresearchwithregardtothebiomechanics offootandanklesurgery.Eachresidentisrequiredtocompleteoneresearchprojectintheirfirsttwoyearsandanadditionalproject intheirthirdyear.

TherenownedNorthwestPodiatricFoundationSurgicalBiomechanicsResearchLaboratory,directedbyJeffreyChristensen,D.P.M.,focusesprimarilyonprospectivestudiesoffootandanklemechanics.ThelaboratoryislocatedatSwedishMedicalCenter,andisfundedbyboththeInternationalFoot&AnkleFoundationandtheWALDOFoundation.Ithasreceivedsignificantacclaimovertheyearswiththepublicationofnumerousaward-winningpapers.StrykerEndoscopyhasdonatedafullcomplementofarthroscopyequipmenttotheresearchlab,allowingforarthroscopicresearchandeducationinsurgicaltechniqueusingcadavers.

OuralumnigoontoachieveboardcertificationwiththeAmericanBoardofPodiatricSurgeryandcontinueintheacademicrealm,asleadersinpodiatricmedicine,locally,nationallyandinternationally.

Externship ProgramPodiatricmedicalstudentsareinvitedforaone-monthclinicalrotation.Intheoperatingroom,theyfunctionassurgicalscrubtechnicianswithacertifiedtechnicianpresent.Thisallowsthestudentfirst-handexposuretoinstrumentationandcloseobservationofsurgeries.

Externsparticipateincadaverdissectionsaswellasnumerouslecturesanddiscussionsgivenbytheresidentsandcorefaculty.Theyarerequiredtopresentaformalscientificlecturetothefacultyinadditiontothepresent-ationofacaseobservedduringtheirrotation.
