Foreword

This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the curriculum, Mathematics 6. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of

core learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website.

(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol frameworks and Saskatchewan’s provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation.

Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support Mathematics 6. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these materials in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.

Pricing of the learning resources contained in this list is subject to change without notice.

Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, the suggested uses, and the suggested quantity (where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products at www.exclusiveeducational.ca and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd. at www.spectrumed.com. Please consult these companies’ catalogues for purchasing information.

The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.

All of the AboveAuthor: Pearsall, ShelleyIllustrator: Steptoe, Javaka

AnnotationFour inner-city students decide to build the world’s largest tetrahedron. The story is told through many characters in the story. The four students are Sharice, James, Rhondell, and Marcel. The connector between the students and the community is Mr. Collins, the teacher, who had the idea for the tetrahedron project.

The story is based on a true event. In 2002, four students in Cleveland, Ohio built the world’s largest tetrahedron, using 16 384 tetrahedrons. At the end of the book is an author’s note on the project and a reader’s guide.

Exploring Mathematics through Literature: Articles and Lessons for Prekindergarten through Grade 8Editor: Thiessen, Diane

AnnotationUsing literature as the starting point for mathematical explorations, this collection of articles and lessons provides teachers with examples to effectively build students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. The articles focus on five strands: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. Many activities lend themselves to small group and whole class discussions. Varied instructional strategies encourage students to utilize and develop critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning abilities. Recording sheets facilitate the collection of data, and the organization of students’ thinking. Many of the literature suggestions may be found in school or public library collections. Teachers are encouraged to use this resource as a stepping stone to using other literature as the basis for mathematical explorations.

Lessons for Algebraic Thinking SeriesAuthors: Wickett, Maryann, Kharas, Katharine, and Burns, Marilyn

AnnotationThis three-volume series, Lessons for Algebraic Thinking, fosters the development of algebraic thinking. Each chapter is organized into several sections: an overview of the lesson, the background of the mathematics fundamental to the lesson, a list of vocabulary terms, a detailed procedure, the required materials, and samples of students’ work. A foundation for algebraic thinking is developed through activities focused on the creation and recognition of numerical and geometric patterns. The lessons support student achievement of several learning outcomes in data management and analysis, numbers, and shape and space strands.

Math CurseAuthor: Scieszka, JonIllustrator: Smith, Lane

AnnotationWhen the math teacher, Mrs. Fibonnica, explains to her class that students can think of almost anything as a math problem, one young girl takes the statement much too seriously. Suddenly, she is cursed with thinking of even the most insignificant activities as math problems that she must solve. Finally, she has a dream that frees her from this obsessive behaviour – until the science teacher, Mr. Newton, explains that students can think of almost anything as a science experiment! The amusing colour illustrations by Lane Smith are sure to delight readers. Although this comical book has some American content, every page is packed with ideas and possibilities suitable for Saskatchewan classrooms.

There is a video program of the book, narrated by the author. The program is available from Media Group.

Niktu: A Game of Algebraic ThinkingAuthors: Greenes, Carole and Findell, Caro

AnnotationEach level of this game offers a progressively more advanced review of algebraic concepts within a small group setting. The games allow students to achieve curriculum outcomes related to number sense and logical thinking.

Each playing card contains an algebraic equation with a missing numeral. Players take turns rolling a die and substituting the rolled number for the missing variable. They attempt to solve the equation before the timer runs out. Players compare answers, using their communication skills, and critical and creative thinking to justify and explain their answers. The resulting discussion also provides the teacher with a window into students’ thought processes and level of understanding.

Concepts addressed include order of operations, inverse operations, fractional values, and integers. Variations for each game are included.

Of Numbers and Stars: The Story of HypatiaAuthor: Love, D. AnneIllustrator: Paparone, Pam

AnnotationRaised during the fourth century C.E. in Alexandria, Egypt, Hypatia became an authority in mathematics. Hypatia’s father, Theon, believed that she should be educated the same as a boy. Theon was a professor at the university and taught Hypatia all that he knew. Hypatia became fascinated with numbers after watching Theon write number sentences. Other scholars sought Hypatia’s opinions on mathematics, science, or philosophy.

The book includes a bibliography, a brief description of the word “mathematics”, and an author’s note about Hypatia.

Out of the Labyrinth: Setting Mathematics FreeAuthors: Kaplan, Robert and Kaplan, Ellen

AnnotationWritten as a guide for parents and educators, this book argues that math should be taught as the highest form of intellectual play rather than as a step-by-step acquisition of skills and facts. The authors emphasize that math is meant to be explored, and that it does not require special talent or ability.

Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi: A Math AdventureAuthor: Neuschwander, CindyIllustrator: Geehan, Wayne

AnnotationSuffering from a stomach ache, Sir Cumference mistakenly drinks a magic remedy that transforms him into a dragon. His son, Radius, searches the castle for the cure. His quest for the magic number that is the same for all circles (pi) involves determining the diameter and circumference of various circular objects. Radius, while measuring a fruit pie, discovers the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and the king is returned to his human form. From that point on, it is declared that pie with an e will be for eating and pi without an e will be the name of this number for all things round.

Thinking Mathematically: Integrating Arithmetic and Algebra in Elementary SchoolAuthors: Carpenter, Thomas P., Franke, Megan Loef, and Levi, Linda

AnnotationThe emphasis of this resource is on teaching for deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Using classroom examples, teachers are shown how to extend students’ thinking in order to help them integrate and connect new knowledge with previous understanding. The authors show how relational thinking, making and representing conjectures, justification, and proof have application in mathematics classrooms. Teacher commentaries provide realistic examples. End-of-chapter challenges offer ideas for problems and activities in class.
