Absolutely Shumka SeriesAnnotation(CAN) The four programs in this series present performances from Canada’s Ukrainian Shumka Dancers.

In Cycles of the Sun, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers use music and dance to reflect seasonal celebrations of nature and community. This beautifully performed program combines Old World tradition and new paths in Ukrainian dance (47 min.).

In Katrusia, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers tell the tale of a young girl who prefers to help her father in his blacksmith shop rather than doing needlepoint or other more traditional activities for women. Life is idyllic in Katrusia’s village until Tartar mercenaries attack the residents. Ultimately, Katrusia’s wit and courage save the day (58 min.).

In Night of Perun, the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers illustrate the dire consequences of a young woman’s blind faith in a vengeful god, Perun, who demands human sacrifice (24 min.).

Shumka: Return of the Whirlwind follows Canada’s Ukrainian Shumka Dancers on a tour of Ukraine. It features scenes from performances as well as behind-the-scenes shots and interviews. This tour provided an opportunity for the group members to take pride in their heritage and to define their Canadian identity (58 min.).

Chasing the Tale of Contemporary DanceAuthor: Anderson, Carol

Annotation(CAN) This book is really a commentary written by Carol Anderson after she spent the summer of 1998 at the Canadian Dance Festival. Her observations and feelings after the Festival led her to write not only about the performers and their dances, but to include writings about other aspects of dance. Chapters include her thoughts about the diversity in Canadian dance, a brief history of festivals in Canada, and profiles of both men and women dancers. Many black-and-white photographs are featured. This is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the Canadian dance scene.

Creative Dance Inspirations: Facilitating Expression Author: Drewe, Sheryle Bergmann

Annotation(CAN) This resource includes an examination of aesthetic features related to creative dance, as well as an explanation of the movement elements upon which creative dance is based. Potential stimuli for creative dance activities and the contexts on which a teacher could focus are discussed, and suggestions for planning a creative dance lesson follow. Forty lesson plans for shaping dances include clear instructions for starting the lesson, organizing the movement exploration, and relating the explorations to a dance idea. The author cautions that every group of students and every teacher are different, and some ideas that work with one class will not work with another. She encourages teachers to take the ideas and adapt them to their particular situation. She views the creative dance lessons as a step on the road to creating original dance lessons.

A Very Dangerous PastimeAnnotation(CAN) The matter of understanding contemporary dance is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to developing audiences. This video and booklet provide tools that an audience can draw on when viewing a dance performance. Canadian celebrities share their ideas about dance while visual examples of contemporary dance and historical clips demonstrate the range of styles and techniques that dance in Canada offers. The strongest message, however, is that the final step towards the enjoyment of dance is up to the individual. This is an excellent video for promoting discussions about dance.

The guide includes suggestions for before, during, and after viewing. The pdf version of the teacher’s guide is available from Media Group. Please contact Media Group for details.

This program is closed-captioned for people with hearing disabilities.

That Incredible StateAnnotation(SK) This program explores the precious period where notions and attitudes take shape in a child’s mind, where questions come in waves, and the answers do not always make sense. Several visual artists, writers, and musicians recollect a time or an incident from their childhood that changed the way in which they looked at the world. They face some of their childhood fears again while paddling around Saskatchewan lakes, walking across frozen dugouts, or facing the limitless wide-open spaces of their youth. These memories are paired with insightful, humorous, and often surprising answers that children gave to some very important questions.

Art Is a MirrorAnnotation(CAN) Jeremie Giles painted 72 portraits of posthumous Canadian artists that he considers to have been the most influential over the past two centuries of Canadian art. He called this project “Art Is a Mirror” because he believes that a country’s identity is reflected in the work of its artists. The art work includes Giles representations of the artists’ work along with his portraits. These portraits were exhibited at Bothwell School in Surrey, B.C. The program will generate discussion about the value of the arts and the need to raise awareness about Canadian artists.

A website offers more information on the artists and images represented in this program: www.artisamirror.com.

Dreamer from the Village: The Story of Marc Chagall. 1st ed.Author: Markel, MichelleIllustrator: Lisker, Emily

AnnotationIn a style that young children can relate to, this book chronicles the life of renowned Russian artist Marc Chagall. The exuberant illustrations by Emily Lisker reflect Chagall’s surrealistic art style. At the end of the book is a glossary with additional information about Chagall including his advice about painting: “You must work the painting with the thought that something of your soul penetrates it and gives it substance. A picture should be born and bloom like a living thing. It should seize some soft and unseizable something, the allure and profound meaning of whatever interests you”.

A website tht supplements this program is available at www.novinakids.com.
